To start of some serious discussion, I really don't get what's up with the "cycle" thing that happens with decks. Like, do you need to have a deck made up of the newest sets in order for it to be legal, or, what?

Yes, its to prevent things from getting to broken and so they can control the balance. (and also to make you buy new cards, though you can't deny the positive effects it has on the balance)

6 months??? No, its a lot longer than that.

3.1. Modified Format
The Modified format is the standard tournament format for Pokémon Organized
Play events. This format will be used at all premier events unless specified
otherwise. The Modified format for the 2007–2008 tournament season contains
the following:
EX Holon Phantoms
EX Crystal Guardians
EX Dragon Frontiers
EX Power Keepers
Diamond & Pearl
Diamond & Pearl – Mysterious Treasures
Diamond & Pearl Trainer Kit
POP Series 4 Promo Cards
POP Series 5 Promo Cards
POP Series 6 Promo Cards
All Black Star Promos numbered 037–040 and DP01 & higher
In addition, future Pokémon USA, Inc., releases will become legal as they are
released, per the Pokémon Organized Play Tournament Rules.
With the exception of basic Energy cards and previously printed cards that
appear in Modified-legal sets, players may not use cards from Pokémon sets
prior to EX Holon Phantoms. Players using previously printed cards that appear
in Modified-legal sets must play those cards using the wording of the most
recent printing of the card. New sets are allowed as soon as the product has been
released in that rating zone. In events that include multiple rating zones, such as
the Pokémon TCG World Championships, the format of the United States will
be used.
There are currently no cards banned in the Modified format.
They generally last for a few years.

Alright, I think I'm all educated now.

2009-2010 format started on September 1st, and I'm assuming it's gonna go until September 1st of next year. And the legal sets are D+P and on.

Now if only I could find a non-terrible starter deck >.>

Most prized card... I'll just start listing:
- Dark Raichu (Team Rocket) 101/100
- Base set Charizard
- All of my Slowpoke and Slowbro
- All of my promo Mewtwos
- Full Southern Island set (especially the Marill).

No no, this is getting too cluttered. Here:
- Southern Island Marill
- Fossil holo Haunter
- Dark Team Rocket Raichu
- Base set Charizard
- Japanese Rocket's Mewtwo

That's it.

On that same note, I remember the few days that I played Pokemon when I was a kid. Base, Fossil, and Jungle were the only sets out (I THINK.) and I would just trade cool looking stuff with friends.

And I only got a Base Set Charizard after getting the structure deck containing him. I was so psyched.

What the...

There was a deck with Base Set Charizard?! How did this happen and I never knew about it?
(I'm assuming it's some Japanese one or something, but no matter what...Base Set Charizard in a deck = mindblowing.)

"Lava" deck

It's a Fire/Fighting deck that I've never heard of. Came out in 2002.

My most prized card is my Giovanni's Nidoking from the Gym Challenge set.
YESSSS!! I have it in Japanese and remember the exact day that I got it (well, not the date, but everything that happened that day). It was raining, I went to a pottery store, got the card afterwards from some hole-in-the-wall store, then went to a friend's house. Pretty sure it was a Saturday.

Did you name yourself after me?

Ah, I see.

So...it basically came out once those cards were already "old" and no one really cared that much about Charizard anymore. That makes me feel better.

Still, that's crazy, given how rare Charizard was, selling for $100+ (even $200+ sometimes) alone.

When I get around to it, I'll whip up some photos of my collection.

i ran a haymaker deck that was pretty popular back then...

lots of syther and electabuzz lol

i am sure it has changed alot since then
