imho, I don't want Lucas back. We didn't really need another Mother rep, and he was so similar to Ness. There are many other characters I'd rather see be in the roster, and honestly two Mother reps would just overcrowd it. I'd much prefer to have King K. Rool than to see Lucas.

Technically that's true though. The leak that said Falco was to be revealed this week said the Lucas was cut, no question. Gematsu's wording is more vague. He could very well still be cut, but until the game comes out, Lucas is confirmed or deconfirmed, I'm thinking he's in.

I'm gonna be honest, Mother is a dead series. There's no arguing. There hasn't been a game in a long time, not counting the eShop release. Do we really need two reps for a dead series? No, we don't. Honestly, I hadn't heard about Earthbound until Melee. With that in mind, most young people who buy Nintendo games today probably aren't familiar with Mother either. There are many, MANY, more newcomers I'd rather see on the roster than two Mother reps.
But that's just me.

Nobody I know knows K.Rool. And yes, including those that play Nintendo games. They know Lucas because of Brawl, though.
Hell, my brother wants Lord Frederik in the game because of Tropical Freeze.

False. I didn't know who King K. Rool was until I unlocked him in a Mario Baseball game, which among others, featured a cast of your core Mario characters, and common mooks such as Goombas. He didn't really stand out to me. Heck, I didn't even know his most well known outfit was just a red cape until I came here. Maybe It's my fault for not growing up with a SNES and playing Donkey Kong Country, but I didn't know this character existed until a few years ago. Lucas may not be recognizable, but his being a semi-clone helps him more than you'd think. It means that it takes much less resources to make him than it does a fully unique character. Also, Lucas could be brought back for promotional reasons. Nintendo could finally decide to localize Mother 3, and leave Lucas in as promotion :strawgrasp:

I still think he's in the game, and only the final roster not having him will convince me otherwise.

That's ridiculous and stupid. Lucas is in no way a threat to K. Rool or vice versa.

I don't think Lucas is in the game, and heck I don't even like him very much, but Gematsu never said that Lucas is 100% gone.

Exactly. I'm still clinging to the assumption that neither have been cut yet, and neither will be cut. My assumption is probably wrong, but either way, I think Lucas is back.

Lucas isn't "competing" for his place on the roster, it's just Sakurai wants to maybe lighten his workload toward the game's release by cutting someone besides just Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Snake (they're all probably cut, sadly). It saddens me but even if he's not in the original release I can hope for him coming back via character DLC, which the Gematsu leak also said would happen. Whether that entails getting characters or just alternate costumes for existing characters, I dunno, but Sakurai said he hates making cuts so maybe he can come around and actually bring them back.

2 mother characters would overcrowd? we had 3 mother chars in brawl 2 playable 1 assist when mario has how many? i know its a main seris but still 2 mother reps wouldent over crowd and they can change his moveset

And yeah, I never really expected it to surpass Mother 2, which is perhaps my favourite game I have ever played. I try to make an effort to treat my impressions of each game independently, so as to not sour my perspective of others.

Thanks. I get pretty sick of hearing how games like Skyward Sword and Pikmin 3 don't live up to their predecessors in quality when I think they just offer something different. I have my favourites, but it doesn't make the others any less incredible.

I'm in Chapter 2 with Duster at the moment in Osohe (I think that was the name) Castle. Pretty surprised I haven't played as Lucas yet. The beginning is so tragic, though I knew that going in.

Unrelated, the fact that Calvin and Hobbes is your avatar makes my night. I love the comic series so much, I have a huge stash of almost every book sitting under my bed. They really are timeless to me.

Back on topic. I kind of have a hard time believing that Lucas will be cut solely because Sakurai really wanted to bring him in in Melee, and got him in Brawl finally, but it would seem like a waste to just cut him now. I understand the Mother series is small and probably not worth 2 representatives to most people, which is a valid argument, but Icarus is no larger (albeit had a more recent installment) and has two reps as well.

All in all I'm just super biased and am really hoping we get to keep the Mother Children in Smash 4.

I agree, man, and I personally judge games that are different from the others in their series as islands, not always just "how does it stack up to the last game?" because that isn't always fair.

Don't worry, I won't say when but you'll still get to play Lucas for a sizeable portion of the game. In the meantime it'll be tough playing as Duster all by himself but that won't always be the case in Chapter 2. Just make sure to grind a little befire that.

That is especially nice to hear because my friends haven't read Calvin and Hobbes, sadly. I love those comc strips with a passion rivaled only by the amusement I get from reading The Far Side comic strips, and it's great knowing someone else here has heard about them ^_^

As much as I love Mother 3 and Lucas to death, I think he might be cut, as much as it breaks my heart. Like I voiced earlier, along with Wolf he's one of the most unique clones in the series and I personally would think it unwise to cut him. But Wolf happens to be even more unique than Lucas so I think he'll get priority.

But I'm not giving up, because we might get DLC for Smash 4, and part of it could be bringing back characters that couldn't make the cut originally like Squirtle, Ivysaur (though I still think they're pretty unlikely to return tbh), and some Melee cuts like Roy and Mewtwo. If Sakurai's feeling lenient he can even bring Snake back (things look really dire with him).

He can even go the extra mile and make Ninten from Mother 1 a DLC character as well. Far less likely but a man can dream.

I'm with you on that one. I'm really not a fan of making other characters skins of returning ones. It would just seem insulting to Lucas, just like the suggestion where Wolf is an alternate costume for Fox.

It just seems so demeaning to the identity of the character and a slap in the face to the fans.

I still don't see your point. If you want to take that as a big middle finger to Mewtwo fans then go ahead, but Sakurai's said it himself that he absolutely hates making cuts. If he were to make some old veterans that didn't make the cut assist trophies or pokeballs it would be with good intentions, not a way of personally insulting fans of whichever character(s) that happened to. And who's to even say that Sakurai's planning on doing DLC? He could have done it with Kid Icarus: Uprising, but he chose not to. As such, I doubt he'll do it with Super Smash Bros. 4.

It'd work for Jigglypuff.

And there's no way Sm4sh can take up 25GB (max Wii U disc size). 50 characters will probably be around 1GB, 2GB tops. So there's no good reason to exclude it DLC. Unless the 3DS can't handle it (>_>).
