not sure if everyone's even heard of it, as it hasn't come out "nationwide" yet. but it's come out in quite a few cities. this movie is now out nationwide!

anyways,

this is the best horror film i have seen in a very, very long time.

this movie actually scared me, and the friend i went to go watch it with. as we were walking into the theater we were both talking about how scary movies never scare us anymore haha.

i think it's better if you don't watch the trailer, as they REALLY overhype the movie on it, but now that it's released nationwide, i've started seeing the trailer on tv, so it might be inevitable.

It's actually scary? Is it like jumpy scary or just keeps your heart beating the whole time?

I don't have any plans on watching the movie, but I might watch it when it comes out on t.v. :p
The trailer confuses me a little.

nooo not jumpy scary! that's what i was thinking too, but nope! it's just edge-of-your-seat, heart-racing, tension-building scary, the way it should be! :]

also yeah, the trailer doesn't really tell you much about the film, but that's a good thing in my opinion!

Yes! This movie is said to be pretty darn scary.

I'm not usually a fan of horror but I'm going to see if I can get my friends to see it.

i'm hyped for this

horror movies have pretty much died, and i've always thought they should cut the empty suspense and attempt more IN YOUR FACE fear. fear is a really hard thing to induce nowadays. people natural fear the unknown, and if we know the schematics about how horror films are made, they are easy to bear. but we all know that there are scary scenes that will just make us want to look away.

i wanna see something genuinely scary

choknater - don't get TOO hyped for this, otherwise you might have too high of expectations and the movie will disappoint!

its not the be all end all of scary movies, but it was really good!

The movie was done in 2007 according to wiki and has a pretty high review on MetaCritic (66 out of 17 reviews isn't bad when one gave a zero).

I'm looking forward to this now that it's nation-wide.

I have seen the director's cut of this film and found it quite boring. There was a bunch of circular dialogue and not a whole lot happened. There were a few creepy scenes, but nothing that scared me at all. I was mosty impressed with the acting and the fact that it was made for around $11,000. My main problem with the film is
they know exactly what they are dealing with from the start. They spend so much time saying "We're going to do something about it," but they never actually do it. Very frustrating.

Keep in mind that the version that I've seen is 20 minutes longer then the one in theaters and had a different ending, but I still can't see how they could make it much better.

The place where I'm interning (Evolution Productions/Twisted Pictures) had an original copy kicking around and they let me watch it. I'm sure the DVD will probably have something along those lines.

The movie was great, and it actually legitimately gave me chills, which is rare. There is a solid, steady tension building, which is more akin to Asian horror films. If you are looking for a movie to scare you through and through, this is not the film for you because while the movie is pretty scary, each "scary scene" serves to build tension and character for the next. The climax is amazing.

He was a jerk by necessity. He was totally and completely skeptical at first, and when he started to get proof, accepting it for what it was became terrifying. Then, he was also worried for his girlfriend, and instinctively, he sought to just protect her as much as he could. He knew it was fruitless, but I think not trying was worse for him. If you saw the reaction when Katie screamed her head off, you knew he legitimately cared for her.

Saw 6 is even an option? Torture porn vs psychological horror with actual build-up. Tough choice there.

Wherever you want me to be... If you're female.
Saw had a good concept at first.. but then they milked their idea out until it sucked.

Seriously... but Paranormal Activity was just plain awesome. Did you know they only used 15,000 dollars on it? It beat out the multi million dollar movies in my opinion.

that was the blair witch project, it broke a world record.
Wiki says $11,000, and this says Blair Witch was $35,000 - http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-paranormal20-2009sep20,0,843011,full.story, but this article says it's closer to $20,000 - $25,000, while Wiki said it was a few hundred thousand.

SANCHEZ: Well, the original budget to get the film in the can was probably between $20,000 and $25,000. Then, once we got to Sundance to make a print and do a sound mix, we were probably more in the neighborhood of $100,000. And then once Artisan Entertainment bought the film, they put another half-million dollars into it. They did a new sound mix, and they had us re-shoot some stuff. They didn't like the original ending with Mike standing in the corner. They asked us to shoot some new endings — Mike hanging by his neck; Mike crucified on a big stick figure; Mike with his shirt ripped open and all bloodied. We shot them but ended up staying with our original ending. So the budget of what you saw in the theaters was probably $500,000 to $750,000.

One of the better movies I've seen in a while. While it had some shock moments, the tension build up was at the right pace and so the few shock moments felt legit.

The ending was predictable but ****ing amazing, especially the smile.

OMG my favorite part was the scene right before the last scene. when micah is like "we have to get the **** out of here lets get a hotel!" and shes like "no...no, lets just stay..i think we should stay..." and she starts closing her eyes AND THAT ****ING SMILE. i was like holy **** this movie is officially amazing as chills went down my spine.

That scene was perfectly done. I love the over-dubbed voice on the word "fine."

I thought that the footprint part with the powder was genius... Such a simple idea yet executed well enough to terrify people...
that scene was really good too!
except, man, if i was micah, i WOULD NOT have gone up into the attic hahaha. i would have seen that someone was up there, quickly shut it, and promptly GTFO'd hahah

Idk most of you guys liked it but I felt it was a let down. Maybe I was overhyped or maybe I was expecting the wrong type of movie. i wanted a movie that would scare the hell outta me. I felt nothing in this movie did that and nothing really happened in it. Ending was great though.

Yeah, this was not that kind of movie. This movie was meant to drag you into the shoes of the characters and slowly build the suspension and tension for final scares.

In fact, the movie intentionally guides you towards relating with Micah because
he is a total skeptic, and he films because he craves evidence that something is there. He's an unexpecting and unwilling participant in the whole debacle, and the fact that he cannot escape, and he is gradually losing control is very endearing. In fact, when he starts shouting at the demon, taunting and provoking it, until he finds the picture, this wasn't him being a foolish ****, but it was him trying to cope with the situation and prove he still had value. His girlfriend was completely at the mercy of the demon, and he could do nothing, but his character HAD to try.

As I have said, if you went in expecting to be scared through and through, you would be disappointed. If you went in expecting to be entertained and try to relate to the characters, you were in for quite the treat.

A couple questions:
1. On a scale of 1 to 10 for somebody who watches scary movies all the time, how scary was this?
2. Is this still only playing in certain cities?

1 - 10: about an 8. I watch mostly J-Horror, so American Horror doesn't even surprise me anymore because it either A. rips it off blatantly, or B. is just people popping out. The 8 comes from the slow build of eerie scenes. While I didn't scream out loud or anything, I did genuinely have chills during the final few scenes. But really, just watch it don't go in with any expectations.

It opened nationwide a week ago.
