In a discussion Twitter today Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar, founding member of the Evo Championship Series, stated that only one of the two Smash titles would be finishing on Sunday at Evo 2015. While this is not new news as it was discussed when the roster of games for Evo was announced, it has taken players by surprise, and has Smash players worrying about further rifts within the scene, and which game will make the main stage.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

With both Melee and Smash 4 having over 1500 entrants in each, it will be interesting which will take the main stage at Evo. Mr. Wizard has not yet confirmed which Smash game will be featured, however he has said that both will still be streamed. Which game will make the main stage? Stay tuned to Smashboards for future Evo Smash coverage.

SmashCapps will be there at Evo live for Smashboards coverage and waits in wonder and e3xcitement to see what Evo 2015 will bring. To keep up with his upcoming Evo adventures follow him on Twitter.

The same thing was discussed for CEO briefly. I feel like it's unfair to the players to make such an announcement so late, and even more to leave the order up in the air.

You hear that?

****storm incoming.

I think there shouldn't be any rift over this at all (both games are at EVO, the respective communities should be happy about that and focus on bringing the hype instead), but there will likely be one anyway. Cause why focus on the good things (record breaking number of entrants, both games there, TO's going out of their way to bring CRT's) when you can be salty about not getting more?

So late? Read the article, this was announced back when the games that would be at Evo at ALL were announced.

It's really disgusting to not tell which game will stay on Sunday...
I hope it's Melee but maybe Nintendo could but some pressure on Evo staff to make them keep Sm4sh.

That announcement was made long ago. It's not unfair to the players at all.

I honestly think it should be Smash 4. It's the newer game, and it deserves a chance to shine in the light. All people know of it is a boring stallfest thanks to Apex's BS rules, and we need an honest chance to prove them wrong!! Anyone else agree?

I don't even care about EVO. All it is is just a tournament that tells people that a person can play. So? There can be people around the world who don't go around to tournaments like EVO and I'm sure that they'd absolutely destroy the champions of Melee and Smash 4 if given the chance.

Just because tournaments have big crowds and prizes, it doesn't mean anything if someone can actually dominate against the best player in a fighting game. However, these said people might not even arrive at tournaments because they have no means or resources to get there on time.

Location plays a huge factor in why there are so little entrants comparative to things like the NBA or the NCAA. Sure, there are teams, but remember, there are multiple locations in these big events, some of which are right at home to some people.

But things like EVO, though, have only one determinate location, and if it's too far from you and would cost too much resources, you'd likely refuse going there and watch instead.

So tournaments shouldn't be a big deal if people can't go to them to show off their own skill. Sure, there may be over 1500 entrants, but there could have been more, had EVO decided to have different locations. It would and could span into the tens of thousands of entrants per game instead of the mere thousands.

So tournaments...not a big deal to me.
Not a big deal at all. If the champion keeps on losing to someone who hasn't entered much tournaments, would that person be the new champion instead? If said person could absolutely destroy the top ten people, would they be considered the best instead?

Tournaments can only decide the tournament champion, not the best player in the world.

Can't believe we lost good fighting games just to host 2 smash games and persona.

A good player can win small tournaments and get money. Then he could go to Evo with this money.

It matters what game finishes on Sunday?

Whatever, would guess Smash 4 due to customs being allowed.

Except what if they prefer online?
What if they use this money for a different thing, like their actual needs?
What if they don't want to drive all the way there due to it being hours away?
What if they have a job and no more vacation days to use?
What if small tournaments don't offer money when you win? (This happened to me, so don't say it doesn't happen.)

You have to remember, there are always certain exceptions. If you think about it, even if I had the money myself and the resources, I wouldn't be able to go there, because it's way too far away from me, plus, I would prefer just going to normal tournaments.

I'm just hyped to watch melee at Evo, I don't exactly care what game is on the front stage.

I would not mind Smash 4 and Melee to be on different days. You won't get people being rude because they want Melee to start, like Apex :p

Exactly! It really sure is easy for me to be the best in the world when I never ever have to prove it to anybody. Thanks for helping others understand.

I don't watch these things live anyway, so it doesn't matter to me. I am more interested in seeing Smash 4 this year because of customs. We know we're going to get a great show with Melee. Melee would be the safe bet to put on Sunday.

This is a GOOD thing. This means that Melee fans won't have to watch Smash 4 if they don't want to, because they won't even be on the same day.

In the grand scheme of things, this is irrelevant except to the people actually participating so if any melodrama and wrist cutting comes out of this, it's primarily going to come from people who this doesn't even impact. In the end, it's all just more streams and more videos for me to review.

I think they should have both days "main stage" because I can guarantee one community won't be happy. However, If one was to be main stage (like it will be) I think Sm4sh deserves it, as it will most likely die earlier then melee, and also it will probably end the debate between customs or no customs.

If someone doesn't care enough to attend the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, then they probably don't have the drive to win either.

People fly in from all over the world. If someone wants to be the best, they are gonna be there.

(This is probably b8, but whatever)

Don't really care which one's on the main stage. They're both getting streamed. They're also conveniently on different days! :4pacman:

This is one of the most poorly constructed arguments against competitive play I've read in a while. What you're actually saying is that there exist a person who's skill surpasses that of Mango, Armada, Mew2King, PPMD, HungryBox, Leffen (Melee) and ZeRo, Nairo, and Dabuz (Smash 4 ) but have never entered the competitive scene and has no experience against actual players is better than the aforementioned top players who actually win and top all the time actually all because they lack the means and resources to attend high level events (some of which you need to qualify and/or be invited to).

Really explain to me how this person got so good. For Glory? How'd they get better Melee? Playing against level 9 computers? AND if they were so good wouldn't this person attend a local (because those are everywhere) or something?

I actually want you to tell me so that I too can be the best smasher by never ever attending a tournament

I'm not sure where the myth of the "random unknown who has never been to a tournament or been seen on Netplay but could somehow JV5 Mango" keeps coming from. The only time I've ever seen something even remotely close to this happen is in Smash 64.

Only one will finish on Sunday? Anticipating some overflow in the schedule is a good idea, but I doubt it'll take until after midnight. :troll:

The closest was actually CPU at EVO 2008, but Brawl was a young game then.

I'm honestly mixed on this, on one end, it's fair because this isn't just a Smash Bros. event, it's a fighting game event. On the other, it creates total dissonance among the Smash community.
Although since there will only be one game for main stage, I'd have to say it should be Smash 4, since it's a new game and deserves the benefit of the doubt, since Melee will still be strong without main stage EVO for ONE year.

OMG!!! I totally disagree.

The players winning EVO or any other big smash tournament at EEUU or around the world, are truly the best of the world.

I'm from Mexico and I know pretty well the smash scene of my country and all Latin America. By that I can said that the players winning the presencial tournaments are the same that win every online tournament with all the random ppl that think that they are good at the game (this talking about smash 4).

EVO or any other national tournament of Smash at EEUU not only have players from that country, also have the best players from other countries.

The best players of Melee of Sm4sh don't only play for fun at random guys, they see the game as a JOB, they live of play smash, they practice his technique and study past matches and the decisions over the time.

I would put all my money in favor of Mang0, Armada, PPMD, Zero, Mr. R, or any other Smash Pro Player against any guy that doesn't attend local tournaments or worldwide tournaments.

A few months ago, Zero, the undispiuted Sm4sh Champion of the World entered to a online tourney with almost 2,000 players (obviously, a lot of the players were guys that don't attend to tournaments). The result: well, Zero ***** all the bracket even with the input lag that brings the online games.

I think that your comment is because you're mad about the existence of a competitive scene for a game like Smash and that is getting bigger as time goes. Yeah, I know, some ppl don't like that Smash is taking the way of the eSports.
