Online battles can go in 2 directions. I hope Nintendo chooses the right one.

Be nice to me guys.
One of the things that makes Halo 2/3's multi player so successful is the sastifaction of it. You get to see the ranks of everybody you are battling, and you get a better rank with each win. Of course , you get penalized if you leave the battle so everybody is encouraged (black-mailed) to play til the end.

Now... Super Smash Brothers Brawl can EASILY do this. Maybe not to the extent of Halo 3, but with a ranking, so you are matched up to people that challenge you. (Not saying that giving n00bs the smack-down will be fun, but it will get old fast.)

But the method that Sakurai is hinting at is that there will BE no record.. and no recognition of who you're fighting. Where's the fun in that, really..... it gives no incentive of competition, and definitely not knowing that you could be facing some l33t person is a bummer.

I am not sure which way Nintendo will go, but I hope they choose the way that Halo 3 went.

Post your thoughts, comments.

Um, Halo is an amazing game, whether you agree or not.
The multi-player is at least. SO FUN.

There will be no rankings in Brawl. Sakurai said so himself. I wanted rankings as well, but you can never get everything you want.

It doesn't really matter to me. In fact, I actually like the anonymousness of playing online. I'd like to think of playing with "non-friends" as if I was playing against computer players in Melee. I would play this mode to practice skill and techniques and no one has to know who I am. It's the perfect practice mode.

Now, if I wanted to compete and flex some muscle, I would then proceed to add players to my friends list. I'm sure there will be methods here on Smashboards on how to exchange Wii ID's / aliases. Over time, I would have a large pool of players on my friends list that I can compete against. Anyone else that I don't know nor care about will be anonymous to me and would be used as practice.

Don't get your hopes up. Looking at the descriptions of it now, Brawl's online looks akin to walking into a room blindfolded, flailing around until you start a fight with someone, then finishing the fight and leaving without even knowing what happened.

Yes i want Rankings, but I don't think it will be added. I don't honestly see why not. What reason does he have for not adding it?Mario Kart DS had Rankings. I mean C'mon. Then again, They did say it was delayed to work on more features for online play..

So maybe there's still a possibility. I mean before, Sakurai said sonic might not be added into brawl, he wans't even in the "current playing cards" right now. And look what we have now.

I wouldn't lose all hope yet.

No Rankings is so, so foolish. It's not just the ePeen factor, which will be in the game no matter what you do. It's that lack of any way to distinguish a nub from a pro, meaning when you're grouped with people, you could have 3 pros and a nub, or 3 nubs and a pro. This might not be a problem, but look at most videos of Tournys. The difference between pros and casuals is gigantic. I'd MUCH rather be paired with people of my skill level, than having some asshat flying across the level ****** me for the lulz. Or, worse yet, I suppose, I'd rather not have what appear to be level 0 computers running all over the place.

yaaa i agree with u...the rankings MAY still have a shot, i really want to have a ranking system also, but if they decide to have rankings they need to penalize the annoyin bozos who disconnect.

Face it. Brawl is going to fail miserably playing online with strangers. Anyone who disagrees is sucking nintendo's ****. It's worst than mkds and mph on the freaking handheld system when it should be better. Friend codes are the only way to go.

This is one of my pet peeve. What makes or breaks an online game is IF IT LAGS OR NOT. It doesn't matter if it supports Headsets, Rankings, Fully customizable options, and even freaking webcams (>.>) if it lags.

But yeah, I wouldn't mind ranking if it penalized you for leaving the game. But we don't have it, so no use discussing it.

Me too, me too.

"With anyone" = playing against CPUs in Melee, but better.
"With friends" = playing against friends, except records are kept, like it says in the update. Not as good as playing them on the same couch, but this mode lets you play people from all over if you don't feel like driving or flying.

Well I dont know how it would "fail" if that's what it was meant to do, play online anonymously. Even if they eliminate rankings, ATLEAST they should show your own NAME, or be able to use TAUNTS. I mean my taunts are going to be freaking awful, but i dont wanna use them on my freinds. Online anonymous play will just feel like im going against a smart CPU. simple as that.

how can they give a handheld ds game rankings and what not, yet not brawl?

And yet they added rankings to Mario Kart DS ?

Players who truly want to get better at the game won't care because while you may not get ranking, you are getting great practice and that is the biggest thing of all. Of course the people who don't realize that practicing is more important than looking good will be disappointed.

The one thing I will agree with is that people tend to disconnect FAR more frequently if a ranking is on the line. This wouldn't be as much of a problem in Smash as it is in MKDS and the like, due to matches being short enough. It would be a pain to have someone drop while in the middle of a really intense match.

That was their first online title. And considering all of the cheating that went around (and I'm not talking about Snaking, but things such as hacking the cardtridge and dropping from games halfway), Nintendo feels like it was possibly a mistake. There's the lag problem too, as people can complain they lost simply because of lag, and never play. Oh, and taunts, that's the worst offender, give anybody the ability to communicate and it'll be abused, with taunts that yell curses all the time, and even pictures/avatars will end up as *****es and swastikas, also like MKDS.

So, friend codes are the way to go. The only thing you really lose from online matches with no communication is the ability to add people afterward. But with Smashboards, there should be more than enough people to put on your friends list anyway.

I like the rankings, but you'll probaly dissconnect right away when you see your fighting some1 at a better skill level than you. The rankings should show up anyway becasue it shows a strive to make you do better.

Well, Ranking's would be nice. But what I would like to see is a way to ask for a random opponent's Friend Code. I mean if I play against somebody really good, I'd want to play them again.

Yeah, we all WANT rankings, but we aren't the creators. We have no force in whether it gets included or not, so all we can do is cross our fingers and hope.

I kinda see the anti Brawl sentiment thats going around over things like online and adv techs and such, but i just can't see Nintendo alienating its player base that horrendously on the TOP first party title of thier next gen console.

Mario strikers Charged has a very good online setup, it has rankings, doesn't lag, and you get penalized if you dissconnect, I don't see why they couldn't just supplant the online engine from strikers into smash.

I feel that there is no need for rankings. To be honest, when I play online, I usually play in a player match, because those who play ranked tend to take it too seriously. Besides, as tight knit as the Smash community is, we'll all probably be playing with each other with friends lists anyway.

Ranking would be nice because there's that group of people that love rankings and, even if they're not on top, are motivated by seeing the standings. So it'd essentially widen the range of people that'll play Brawl extensively.

I personally couldn't care less, and am all for no rankings if it means far less disconnects (it's stupidly common in Mario Kart).

I don't understand how Nintendo has so many problems with online play on their systems, while the others aren't quite as bad (sans Xbox Live trash-talking, which wasn't there when I played Test Drive: Unlimited - yay for lesser known titles). OH WAIT. It's because if a parent is buying a video game for their 7-year old, Nintendo is the first choice.

Strikers wasn't fun for me, but I'm not exactly a sports fan to begin with. So even with soccer/football "marioized," it still wasn't very fun to me.

Nintendo already chose the "wrong" path, you see. Which is still the best way to go about it, imo. People who are greatly concerned about their rankings tend to bring a game down, and you're no exception.

I'm sure it could be re-worked.

Example, when you first enter the battle, you fight ANONYMOUSLY. BUT...

After the match is over, you go to a data screen, that shows all players record, and NAME. This way, players can't drop during the match if they don't know who you are or your rank first. Also, They can make it where you CAN'T drop from the game unless your wi-fi connection disconnects or you physically turn the wii off. And if people turn their Wii's off just to avoid having a freakin 1 Loss on their record, then wow. Talk about sore loser.

If I saw someone with 500 wins and 0 loses, I probably wouldn't play them just because it'd be obvious they were a disconnector. Then again, if the system im stating is added, I really wouldn't know their record until the match was over.

Then again, If ranks weren't added, the game would still be awesome, even online.

Mario Strikers Charged would let us know the names of strangers.. Yeah..

But anyhow, I kind of understand Nintendo. If people could just taunt message you
his AIM or MSN adress, or put curse words in there it would not be safe, and that is
the thing Nintendo straves for.

It's not hard for me to accept this, because frankly I diddn't even expect an online
play mode. (Don't ask XD). Issn't it cool enough you can just battle any friend and
even send messages and movies and screenshots and pummel the SandBag.. Wow,
so much more then just this. I'd be happy if I were you.

Besides, were are we now? SmashBoards is the ultimate way to find "strangers' and
battle them by asking their friend code. There's more to it.

The problem is that people actually do that. I know it's crazy, but some people just can't lose. Think of your 8-year-old cousin who constantly "changes" a board game's rules if he's losing. Except it's even worse.

I won't be playing online, as I've never been a big fan of it, but I do hope you get what you wish.
There are ways round it, though. I think the best thing you can hope for is to be able to use friend codes internationally. That way, an internet tournement community could work around the issues, so you could play with the all the pros.

Rankings(or records) should be kept to match players based on equal skill. They don't need to be public or visible to anyone else or even to yourself, just as long as there is some way you can guarentee that the match you're going to be playing in will be close and fun.

Getting stomped by the top players in the world is stupid for you cause you don't have a chance and it is a waste of time for the other person. Doing the same to someone of far lower skill then you is equally stupid.

yeah it's pretty intimidating if u know the person your fighting is better than you. But still, rankings would be the best direction to go. Hands down.

I honestly think Nintendo will change their minds about Brawl and online rankings. There'll be some sort of way to keep track. I'm pretty confident of that. They wouldn't add it to some semi-popular games and leave it out with what will be one of their best money makers. At least they won't if they're smart about it.

i think either way will be fine, because there will always be someone to play agains no matter what time it is and it will be something to do when your RL friends or siblings arent there for you to beat up (in the game)

I'm with those that say that online is much better than no online. I'd rather have a laggy game than to fight the same predictable level 9's over and over again.

I think the best thing Nintendo can do is have "hidden" rankings like in Pokemon Battle Revolution, where as you get better you fight better ranked players, and you don't even realize it.
