Online battles can go in 2 directions. I hope Nintendo chooses the right one.

I'm with those that say that online is much better than no online. I'd rather have a laggy game than to fight the same predictable level 9's over and over again.

I think the best thing Nintendo can do is have "hidden" rankings like in Pokemon Battle Revolution, where as you get better you fight better ranked players, and you don't even realize it.
haha, well that explains a lot about PBR. The day my friend got it, I used my awesome team (w/o ubers) online and started beating players until about 3 or 4 in the morning, when Japanese players started beating me, even without ubers! I just assumed the average japanese player was just much better than the average american player, but maybe not.

But to say something in regards to Brawl, a hidden rank would be the BEST thing to have. If they have that, I'd have no complaints about the online system.

This is what I want.

Lag free. No technical "there's always lag, even in offline" please. You know what I mean D=

If there was Rankings. This is how it should work. 4 Types. Win, Lose, Tie, or D/C. Disconnection should have WORSE penalty than Losing. Yes, there are natural disconnections sometimes, but they are pretty rare. Seriously, if you play Mario Kart DS Online, you'd know why this is so annoying. You never get to play a full cup.

yeah no leavers would be a nice feature, and if they do decide to unplug their wii it should prevent them from logging on for a while or something, just take it like a man and lose.

I totally disagree that rankings would ruin the game. No matter what Nintendo does, there are going to be plenty of unofficial rankings. What do you think tournaments are? Brawl is a competitive game. It DESERVES to have a ranking system.

Have a system similar to Tetris DS. You earn or lose points per match. 1st and 2nd place earn points, 3rd and 4th lose, or some such. When you're matched with people, it's within +/- some percentage of your points.

That way it's less "I'M NUMBER ONE" and more "I have a large amount of points."

There's always going to be the ePeen feature no matter what you do.

Solution:

Don't battle "With Anyone" battle "With Friends", except you request and arrange your fights through smashboards, getting the friend codes of everyone you want and everyone that matters here. You can post your results so other people get to know how good you are and subsequently challenge you. It's perfect, this site is all you need. :colorful:

With the Smash Brothers Perfection Program (the delay), I would want 3 online modes: Play Friends, Play Anonymous, And Competitive Mode: Fight for Rankings!
best idea in the thread, and with nintendo being all about innovation and originality i can see this happening.

And since people seem to know each other well, they can ask for battles more often than with strangers (meaning a "recycling" of Friend Codes).

They're going to take the easy route and not implement any sort of ranking, even if it is invisible. Nintendo wants us to beat down random people or get our friends' stupid 16 digit numbers so we can play against each other.

They could at least try to put some effort into online >.>

You have to realize Brawl is the first of its series to be online. Halo 1, 2 and 3 are all online so Microsoft had knew what they were doing in Halo 1 and 2, while Brawl will be new to the online segment.

microsoft is also a computer company, so they can probably do things like online ranking better.

nintendo should have hired Blizzard or something to do their ranking system for them.

I kinda see the anti Brawl sentiment thats going around over things like online and adv techs and such, but i just can't see Nintendo alienating its player base that horrendously on the TOP first party title of thier next gen console.

Mario strikers Charged has a very good online setup, it has rankings, doesn't lag, and you get penalized if you dissconnect, I don't see why they couldn't just supplant the online engine from strikers into smash.

I've never disconnected from Strikers Charged... what's the penalty?

As for this topic... clever people will find a way to make online play work... that simple. PM me if you are serious about making online play work. The point of online play is to connect people one more way. It's not to find the best player out there. What defines the best player? Someone who plays the most matches? Has the most KO's? Has the best winning percentage?

Dead Horse can also go two directions as well.

The path to Heaven

Or the path to Hell

Beating it constantly won't cause a third option. >_>

I think people get the wrong idea when it comes to rankings. The most important thing ranking does is allow players to face people at their level of skill. It's not wise to put new people up against veterans and expect the new guys to have fun.

I guess then we'll just have to organize tournaments/events ourselves to find people around our own skill level.... http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=120358

I've played Mario Strikers Charged in fact i own it... I play it online... The difference is that in this game, I know my opponent's Mii's name and their rank... I don't know how this will be different in brawl... Actually i do, there won't be any of that, just a 'X v.s. Y' screen or something.

Note: Nintendo fails miserably when it comes to online.

This is how they did it for Worms Open Warfare 2 for the DS. You can do random play of ranked. Only downside to the online play on it is there there is no penalty for DC :( Nintendo has the capabilty of doing this stuff, lets just hope they do.

Rankings ruin online games. People just take the game entirely too seriously when there's something at stake. I don't need a number on the screen to tell me whether or not I'm good. Playing the game to have fun is good enough for me.

People have fun playing competitively. I know I do. Fun is subjective, not objective as most people believe. However, as I've said before, there will be no rankings in Brawl.

There are plenty of games that don't have ranking yet still are incredibly fun.

The really old Ghost Recon for one.

It is an effort to keep the game focused on fun without the hassle of who is the better person.
This is what I hate.

The only reason I play games is to get better then everyone else, it's my motivation. Thats fun, for me at least.

Same here. And it's nothing wrong with getting better then everyone then whooping their a$$. I mean, You worked hard for it, and You are seeing progress. Of course, some people take losing/winning too seriously though. Those are the few that ruin it for all.

I just wish you KNOW WHO YOU FIGHT AGAINST. Plus you can only do Time 2:00 in non-friend mode, and it doesn't even show the results screen, so it's impossible to tell who just won!

I say they AT LEAST fix those problems!

Holy. Are you serious? Only 2 minute battles and no result screen? Oh my, it's MUCH worse then I thought. I mean, I thought atleast it could be 4-5 stock, and show how many kills you got and what not. But geez, They have to add more to this.

Even though I'll still be fine with just having online play period. :p

Be nice to me guys.
Nintendo already chose the "wrong" path, you see. Which is still the best way to go about it, imo. People who are greatly concerned about their rankings tend to bring a game down, and you're no exception.
Being concerned about ranks and being addicted to it is TOTALLY different.

ranking or no ranking...the game will still be fun...but i hope the part about only 2 minutes in a non-friend match isnt true, and if it is it definently needs to be changed!

With absolutely no proof in the 2 minute games, as far as I can tell, I can say that its probably false. I mean, the only reason the E for All games were probably 2 minutes long was so that everyone could get a chance to demo a game as hot as this.

As for no rankings, this community alone is a ranking outside of nintendo's ranking system, and lets face it, the ranking system for MKDS and MPH wasn't THAT good, considering how MPH was almost based how much you played (as long as you had a win record of above 50ish, at least), and MKDS was well.. I forget. I think it was number of wins with the number of games played, but I'm not sure.

Rankings are cool, but honestly, as long as I can hop into a match and play a good game of smash without lag or anything like that, I'm good.

The lack of ability to add friends at your liberty is far more annoying to me. Is anyone out there really fond of this ridiculous friend code system? Not to mention the fact that, in a few years, we're probably going to have a RIDICULOUS amount of friend codes to memorize for EVERY online game??

it would only lag if you play someone from a different country. And if the system is like that of Mario Kart DS, Then you should be able to select what country you want to face people in. It's been awhile since I played it, but it was something like:

Worldwide mode - you face everyone around the world
Current Area - you fight any in your area. I don't remember exactly how far it goes, but it's pretty far. Probably covers the entire range of where ever you live in your country.

One of the things that makes Halo 2/3's multi player so successful is the sastifaction of it. You get to see the ranks of everybody you are battling, and you get a better rank with each win. Of course , you get penalized if you leave the battle so everybody is encouraged (black-mailed) to play til the end.

Now... Super Smash Brothers Brawl can EASILY do this. Maybe not to the extent of Halo 3, but with a ranking, so you are matched up to people that challenge you. (Not saying that giving n00bs the smack-down will be fun, but it will get old fast.)

But the method that Sakurai is hinting at is that there will BE no record.. and no recognition of who you're fighting. Where's the fun in that, really..... it gives no incentive of competition, and definitely not knowing that you could be facing some l33t person is a bummer.

I am not sure which way Nintendo will go, but I hope they choose the way that Halo 3 went.

Post your thoughts, comments.
Halo 3 ***s only care about achievements and don't really care about playing the game for what it is, a game. Sakurai wants people to play Smash for what it is; a game, no matter what skill level you are.

Another thing I hate is it doesn't show your name and you can't taunt

That is so lame it's just like we are fighting a CPU like I said
