Smash Lord
With the Smash Brothers Perfection Program (the delay), I would want 3 online modes: Play Friends, Play Anonymous, And Competitive Mode: Fight for Rankings!

haha,I'm with those that say that online is much better than no online. I'd rather have a laggy game than to fight the same predictable level 9's over and over again.
I think the best thing Nintendo can do is have "hidden" rankings like in Pokemon Battle Revolution, where as you get better you fight better ranked players, and you don't even realize it.
best idea in the thread, and with nintendo being all about innovation and originality i can see this happening. With the Smash Brothers Perfection Program (the delay), I would want 3 online modes: Play Friends, Play Anonymous, And Competitive Mode: Fight for Rankings!
I kinda see the anti Brawl sentiment thats going around over things like online and adv techs and such, but i just can't see Nintendo alienating its player base that horrendously on the TOP first party title of thier next gen console.
Mario strikers Charged has a very good online setup, it has rankings, doesn't lag, and you get penalized if you dissconnect, I don't see why they couldn't just supplant the online engine from strikers into smash.
I guess then we'll just have to organize tournaments/events ourselves to find people around our own skill level.... http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=120358I think people get the wrong idea when it comes to rankings. The most important thing ranking does is allow players to face people at their level of skill. It's not wise to put new people up against veterans and expect the new guys to have fun.
This is how they did it for Worms Open Warfare 2 for the DS. You can do random play of ranked. Only downside to the online play on it is there there is no penalty for DCWith the Smash Brothers Perfection Program (the delay), I would want 3 online modes: Play Friends, Play Anonymous, And Competitive Mode: Fight for Rankings!
You know, I might just have my record be like 500 loses on purpose. Make everyone believe I suck, then when the match starts..OWNZOR to the MAX.why would you all want rankings, your record would be horrible anyways.
good onewhy would you all want rankings, your record would be horrible anyways.
People have fun playing competitively. I know I do. Fun is subjective, not objective as most people believe. However, as I've said before, there will be no rankings in Brawl.Rankings ruin online games. People just take the game entirely too seriously when there's something at stake. I don't need a number on the screen to tell me whether or not I'm good. Playing the game to have fun is good enough for me.
This is what I hate.It is an effort to keep the game focused on fun without the hassle of who is the better person.
Same here. And it's nothing wrong with getting better then everyone then whooping their a$$. I mean, You worked hard for it, and You are seeing progress. Of course, some people take losing/winning too seriously though. Those are the few that ruin it for all. This is what I hate.
The only reason I play games is to get better then everyone else, it's my motivation. Thats fun, for me at least.
Holy. Are you serious? Only 2 minute battles and no result screen? Oh my, it's MUCH worse then I thought. I mean, I thought atleast it could be 4-5 stock, and show how many kills you got and what not. But geez, They have to add more to this.I just wish you KNOW WHO YOU FIGHT AGAINST. Plus you can only do Time 2:00 in non-friend mode, and it doesn't even show the results screen, so it's impossible to tell who just won!
I say they AT LEAST fix those problems!

Being concerned about ranks and being addicted to it is TOTALLY different.Nintendo already chose the "wrong" path, you see. Which is still the best way to go about it, imo. People who are greatly concerned about their rankings tend to bring a game down, and you're no exception.
Quoted for truthI totally disagree that rankings would ruin the game. No matter what Nintendo does, there are going to be plenty of unofficial rankings. What do you think tournaments are? Brawl is a competitive game. It DESERVES to have a ranking system.
Have a system similar to Tetris DS. You earn or lose points per match. 1st and 2nd place earn points, 3rd and 4th lose, or some such. When you're matched with people, it's within +/- some percentage of your points.
That way it's less "I'M NUMBER ONE" and more "I have a large amount of points."
There's always going to be the ePeen feature no matter what you do.
Halo 3 ***s only care about achievements and don't really care about playing the game for what it is, a game. Sakurai wants people to play Smash for what it is; a game, no matter what skill level you are.One of the things that makes Halo 2/3's multi player so successful is the sastifaction of it. You get to see the ranks of everybody you are battling, and you get a better rank with each win. Of course , you get penalized if you leave the battle so everybody is encouraged (black-mailed) to play til the end.
Now... Super Smash Brothers Brawl can EASILY do this. Maybe not to the extent of Halo 3, but with a ranking, so you are matched up to people that challenge you. (Not saying that giving n00bs the smack-down will be fun, but it will get old fast.)
But the method that Sakurai is hinting at is that there will BE no record.. and no recognition of who you're fighting. Where's the fun in that, really..... it gives no incentive of competition, and definitely not knowing that you could be facing some l33t person is a bummer.
I am not sure which way Nintendo will go, but I hope they choose the way that Halo 3 went.
