Wow, if the skill level that I saw in those videos made it to the top 8, >_>;;;;;;;

WC must really suck at brawl.

So does anyone have videos of the last match?

If CPU beat Ken because of items(like, at that last minute, some item like a bomb or something appears next to CPU, or an exploding crate appears ontop of Ken and explodes), we have evidence to prove that items introduce luck(it doesn't overtake skill but it certainly introduces luck), maybe they might change their rules next year.

Correction to an earlier post: Ken also went to the Nintendo-sponsored tourney, that 4-city tournament where the winner got a crystalized Wii, or something like that.

If something crazy like that happened, I probably would have been informed of it (like how BarDulL was a victim of a bad FS in his match). I was told the ending was an edge guard. Beyond that, I don't know.

I did a search on several networks. I'm certain this checks out ... this kid is from Illinois.

So start celebrating Illinois people, you have an EVO champ.

Wow...I'm saddened already just reading about this. I don't care about Ken losing or anything to CPU or anything (this CPU kiddo sounds godly, more details please), but still...I can't believe you guys would say that about Evo. ;_;

I wanted to go to Evo2k8 *always wanted to go*. I could've had a chance to compete and stuff. ><; But my family cancelled the trip to Vegas. Snickerdoodle! Maybe next year.

To be honest, I think it's actually good Evo decided to put items and not ban certain stages. Why? Because it actually would make you work harder to "fight against luck". To me, that takes more skill than staying on the ruleset of "no items, these certain tiers only, final destination". 'Cuz if someone could also play skillfully with items and whacky stages, then that's some **** skill right there.

Aside from that, I hope next year Brawl is there with the same ruleset and that there's more games.

Edit: I also found out CPU used "Sky World". EPIC RITE THAR. That place and Distant Planet = favorite places.

ShinoBee you're ********, it does not take more skill to win with luck factors, wtf. Oh I got a pokeball I have a giant disadvantage, but it was moltres and it ***** them. That was my skill right there. Luck is NEVER good, minimizing luck is always best for competitive purposes.

edit - this is m2k

:[ That's not very nice to say, I was just saying that if you tried to fight against these lucky factors, maybe it proves better skill. That and Pokeball = b& in Evo. Though, Pokeball does add fun to matches (and you could actually dodge Pokemon attacks). But then again, you could also TRY to prevent the other person from getting it, don't cha know? Doesn't that take actual skill? You could actually steal the Pokeball from them, too.

"Allowed Items: Banana Peel, Unira, Spring, Mr. Saturn, Green Shell, Smoke Ball, Freezie, Super Scope, Sandbag, Food, Screw Attack, Warp Star, Metal Box, Bunny Hood, Beam Sword, Baseball Bat, Lip's Stick, Star Rod, Hothead, Smash Ball, Ray Gun, Pitfall, Cracker Launcher, Motion-Sensor Bomb, Hammer, Golden Hammer, Bumper, Franklin Badge."

These don't really affect "luck" in my opinion. And these are sorta easy to avoid, too.

And about tiers: Notice the majority of people play the typical? It's a good change to see a R.O.B. (aka "wall-e") player win, rather than the typical godly tiers people usually use.

What about when a useful item appears right next to you? >.> What skill did you use to make it come. They pop up randomly with varying level of power that screams luck. The match will probably still come down to skill but there far more opportunities for lucky wins which people playing at a competitive level hate especially when they are clearly better.

On the other hand items do make it a bit more fun I suppose, but that shouldn't be an important factor when there's money on the line.

What about the skill involved to make said item an advantage? And the skill of the opponent to turn that item into a disadvantage? Very few items in this game can be compared to win button upon, and the few that can are typically removed from play anyway.

Whether or not items are truly "broken" or truly take "skill" shouldn't be the issue here. Brawl with items on is a completely different game from Brawl with items off. The balance is different, the pacing is different, and the entire way you play is completely different compared to items off. The competitive Smash community has chosen Brawl with items off as their preferred way to play the game, and there are very few within the community that even question that.

Also, ShinoBee, you seriously need to go to a real tournament if you honestly think its "no items, these certain tiers only, final destination" because that is totally 100% false.

The main reason why Ken competed in Evo was because he LOVES items, those are his words not mine.

A quick point on items when it came to Evo....

During the matches for the top eight competitors there were many times where an "lucky item" such as a golden hammer or even a smash ball would appear near a certain character but yet the player choose to ignore them. In fact many game breaking situations that people complained about before Evo started RARELY came to surface. A few examples ....

1. Hammers were flat out ignored by mostly all the players. Even when someone picked up a golden hammer, they were quickly countered and even lost a stock because of that.

2. Sonic's final smash, a move that people feared would dominate evo, was not seen in the finals. Why? Because none of the top eight players even used Sonic.

3. Final Smash's in general were not the end all be all moves in the game. CPU's Rob easily dodged Ken's Marth's final smash at least three times during the final round. On the reverse Ken's Marth endured Rob's final smash even while at 200%.

4. Falco's final smash was easily evaded by the likes of Ken, CPU and other finalist through the use of rolling and other clever tactics. If fact the total amount of kills Falco's final smash managed to generate was less than five.

Winning a Brawl tournament with items, the evo approved item list, does not mean you're a lucky player nor does it mean you're just good with items. What it does show is that you are the best at adapting to your surroundings. After the final round I talked to several brawl players about their experience at Evo including Wes, Compton and the rest of Deadly Alliance and do you know what their biggest complaint about the tournament was? Chain grabbing.

Not items, not final smashes, not random stages but chain grabbing, a tournament legal tactic widely accepted by the general smash community
