Oceans of Candela: Create an Original Fantasy World

Something I'd like to point out is that if we merge the submissions, we'll be focusing on numerous aspects of the ocean - Islands, coral reefs, kelp forests, etc. In addition, we'll be able to focus on a wide variety of sea life. If we keep them separate, it allows us to focus on a wider range of environments, but the focus will be more thinly-spread than if we merge them, since we'll be juggling multiple biomes. I'll also note that we'll probably only have one or two races/kingdoms per biome if we leave them separate, whereas with combining the prompts we'll have numerous races in the biome.

Basically, do we want to have as many biomes as possible, or do we want to stick to a handful of biomes and dive deeply into them?

I choose to keep the worlds separate. Although I prefer the Ocean World way more than Solarpunk, I don't see a way how both can work, though maybe we can find workarounds.
I mean, the entire point of Solarpunk is that technology works in harmony with nature. The ocean is a very large part of nature, so it's easy to make it work. Use water-powered energy, build floating city-boats, make up some kelp that can form underwater floating gardens, that sort of stuff. Solarpunk in general is flexible, because of the wide range of biomes nature covers, so we can make it work with just about any environment so long as nature itself is still thriving.

What if….there are massive elevated domes filled with different ecosystems that humans managed to bio-engineer to co-exist with after near-destruction of the fantasy world via massive global flooding. These would be desolated areas with raging floods with a few islands here and there.
That could lend itself to an interesting concept, though I will note that we'll have to consider how the different races will interact in our scenarios. Do we want a low-key world where the majority of the conflict comes from the wildlife, or do we want tensions and powerful kingdoms butting heads? On that note, how would the domes in this scenario interact with the outside world if they're meant to be their own ecosystem?

Regardless, I think it's good that we're having discussions like this and making sure we all know what we're getting into if we go down a certain path.

In regards to a potential Solarpunk Ocean world setting...the main draw to solarpunk is that technology is adapting to nature and not vice versa, right? An ocean world like this could go hand in hand together because of hydroelectric power and wind-based power. Some tides could power some water-powered generators, and maybe even some whirlpools too, and if there's a waterspout on the surface it's two birds with one stone! The book Dune has some solarpunk themes to it, and they bring up "sea & air power", too. A world where water powers practically everything sounds like it could fit the aesthetic of both worlds.

Welp, the votes are in, and it seems that the majority of voters are fine with a compromise and combining the Solarpunk and Ocean submissions, which were extremely close in the previous vote. Our world will take place on an ocean planet, dotted by islands. Aside from fantasy magic and creatures, clean, renewable energy is also present, with technology working in harmony with nature.

On that note, we'll also have to set up how magic works in this setting. After all, it is a fantasy world, regardless of the technology level. As mentioned previously, that's our next job.

Job 2 - Magic System

Decide the rules, source, and scope of magic in our world. Where does it come from? Is it widespread? Does it have any drawbacks? How many requirements are needed for spells? How does it work with the technology? Here's an example of a submission:

Job 2 Submission - Mana
Magic is inherent in everything, especially water. Since the world is covered by water, it means that magic is abundant everywhere. In addition, it's also strong in living beings, as they contain water inside them as well. As such, many organisms adapt to channel magic in various ways, though not all of them can use their inherent magic and are effectively just plants and animals like we'd find on Earth. With sentient races, they have internal organs that allow them to channel magic, though the sensitivity varies between races and individuals, ranging from lucky natural masters to unlucky sods who can't use magic at all. Magic spells have numerous branches, variants and applications, and depending on how skilled you are it's relatively easy to customize or create entirely new spells on your own. Magic also powers the technology of the world to at least some degree, especially since Solarpunk works with nature and nature here is inherently magical. As such, the mana empowers the biofuel, the hydroelectric energy, and even the wind energy through water vapor.

Tiamatite:

Much like how the atmosphere of Arrakis is laced with spice, the world's oceans are laced in flakes of a substance called Tiamatite, named after the goddess of saltwater in Sumerian myth. Tiamatite is too weak to maintain a larger structure like an ingot, whether in the air or in the water. The organisms of the world discovered that they can tap into "magic powers" because the water they drank was filled with Tiamatite. Tiamatite awakens the potential in one's body by essentially becoming a new nutrient that is charged by the nervous signals of the body. When Tiamatite is infused with a nerve signal issued by the brain, they carry the signal as though it were computer storage and use it like coding logic to cast the magic. Make no mistake: there is no actual "mana" in this world. Users are mainly taking advantage of the electric power in their nervous system to use as power. In exchange, however, their bodies are reshaped to rely on Tiamatite; if one doesn't consume Tiamatite for long enough, their bodies melt into water and become one with the seas. The hydroelectric industry would've been a rather niche source, even in the world it's based on, but thanks to Tiamatite, hydroelectric power fuels all civilizations consistently. And it is thanks to Tiamatite that civilization is given the power to develop advanced technologies to survive.

However, not everybody wants to be a mage, of course. There are systems where some people wish to filter the Tiamatite out of the water and send it back to the sea for them to drink. Those who wish to become mages will go through rites to drink Tiamatite-rich water and begin their path onto the hydromantic arts.

Water Energy, a.k.a. Aqua Matter

The Aqua Matter will be Magic System, since everything on this planet is Powered with Water and you can power and use Electronic Water Guns, Electricity made from Power of Aqua Matter and other Stuff relating to Water. The Magic spells are powered by Aqua Matter, which you attack with Water. On this Planet, there are Fish People, who are living thanks to Aqua Matter and Water. Without Water and Aqua Matter, the whole System, Flora and Fauna of the the Planet won't exist. Thanks to Magic of Water, People and Aquatic People (Squid People, Octopus People, Fish People and Sea Entities can be alive whole time.

This is a realistic take on a water based magic system

Mana System

What makes an ocean an ocean, the fact that it has saltwater, not only does it make fresh water hard to come by, but also makes fresh water a source of power. You can convert saltwater into fresh water using filtration and distillation then boiling the resulting compound. However this makes freshwater hard to get meaning that fresh water is worth it's weight in gold, making it an unorthodox currency.

All beings have fresh water inside them, its what gives them live, by drinking salt water we poison ourselves with and become less lively due to our water getting impure. Dye to having fresh water inside of us we can channel fresh water outside of us and use it to create powerful magic abilities.

There is an even rarer type of water called Pure Water, devoid of any impurities this water is capable of rejuvenating life and when channeled is capable of creating new life, due to this some ambitious people have dedicate their lives to finding or producing a so called Lost Fountain which is said to contain an unlimited supply of Pure Water.

Now that we know the three ranks of water (Salt, Fresh, and Pure) we can discover what kind of magic this stuff is capable of.

Salt Water, due to impurities, isn't good with traditional magic, however those impurities give it something else, various minerals to filter and harvest, due to this fact people have harvested the minerals out of Salt Water and use them to provide power to the various cities around the world, however 5 minerals have been sought after in particular, not only due to being a great source of electrical power but also the capabilities to augment Fresh Water based magic.

Fresh Water can be manipulated by those who masted how to interact with the water inside their bodies, masters of the craft often carry bottles of Fresh Water to have a quick and easy way to conjure magic, however it is possible to manipulate the Fresh Water inside yourself and others but it comes with many health risks including dehydration, the 5 minerals I mentioned are also commonly carried around in a grinded up powder which allows users of this magic to augment their powers.

Pure Water as said previously is capable of creating life when channeled correctly, it can also give the user who drinks it a rejuvenated body and cures them of any impurities, however Pure Water is easy to tarnish just by being in open air and so need to be vacuumed sealed in order to preserve it properly.

I like this idea, but just for clarity: I'm assuming this is just people who choose to become "mages" who become dependent on the Tiamatite, or does everyone require Tiamatite?

These minerals are:
  1. Lithium: Allows the weilder to create a fiery wave by mixing Fresh Water with this potent reactant.
  2. Copper: Allows the channeling of electricity into their abilities.
  3. Graphite: Allows for the Fresh Water to fuse with the minerals inside allowing for the creation of mud and dirt.
  4. Sulfur: Creates acids and poisons out of Fresh Water.
  5. Silicone: Casues Fresh Water to solidify into frozen ice.

Quick heads up, the prompt is mainly for where magic comes from and the basic rules of how they work. The elements are for the next job, so everyone else has a shot at submitting their own elemental system. That being said, I do like the twist on standard elements the minerals provide, so be sure to save them for the next prompt (Though you may have to tweak the idea a little to make it work, depending on which magic system gets voted in this round)

Quick heads up, the prompt is mainly for where magic comes from and the basic rules of how they work. The elements are for the next job, so everyone else has a shot at submitting their own elemental system. That being said, I do like the twist on standard elements the minerals provide, so be sure to save them for the next prompt (Though you may have to tweak the idea a little to make it work, depending on which magic system gets voted in this round)
I will I deleted it and just said that Fresh Water can be mixed with minerals to augment their powers.

Ah, should probably edit that into the original post, but there are filtration systems for those who don't want to be mages, but those who chose to become adept at magic will go through a sort of ritual that administers Tiamatite-rich water into their bodies.

First time I've tried any of this fantasy worldbuilding stuff, so if I do something wrong feel free to notify me.

Job 2: Magic System
Photoluciferin

In a world dotted by small islands, surrounded by a seemingly-infinite-but-actually-finite body of water, you can imagine how the general population on the surface must have felt once met with the terrifying breakthrough that our current technology (at the time) was accompanied by a large and terrible consequence which would eradicate life on the surface. As such, we had to adapt to our environment quickly. Multiple great high-ranking scientists were tasked to find an alternative energy source. Within days we destroyed all old sources of energy, and had already built green-based energy sources that would be able to live in harmony with the environment around us: wind turbines, specialized dams, solar panels, and other means. But more interestingly, meanwhile, a greater breakthrough had been made.

Scientists have found that it is possible to harvest special energy from certain algae that develop along the shore and seemingly everywhere that natural sunlight can reach through in the depths. Although the processes of photosynthesis in algae and higher plants are very similar, algal photosynthesis accounts not only for nearly all of the photosynthetic carbon fixed every year, but it has been noted that due to their large presence in this world that they've been able to evolve at a more rapid pace than we've anticipated. With this continued development, we've found out that they've been able to sustain themselves by releasing a special luciferin, which is the compound that causes bioluminescence. Now here's the catch: this luciferin seemingly has the same properties as sunlight. Algae have evolved to materialize the effects of sunlight as compounds as an added survival mechanism, which means even during night, other nearby algae can recycle their luciferin to keep photosynthesis ongoing. With the materialization of sunlight, comes a new possible green energy source. And so these scientists have dubbed this special luciferin as "photoluciferin".

Shortly after, another development had been made, by applying these algae in a daily diet, one would be able to experience a boost in health, an increased lifespan, improved focus and strength. It has also been said that by ingesting more of this photoluciferin than regular, one would gain the "Power of the Sun" and would be in control of supernatural powers like emitting natural sunlight and heat. Due to this, photoluciferin has also been dubbed as "magic" by the general population and has still a number of uses that might be a mystery to the people that daily consume and use it as an energy source.

First paragraph is basically a backstory I've tried to give to this magic system, not sure if that's necessarily allowed so disregard if not. I hope this suffices as a base, I wasn't very sure how far I should go so I tried to leave many aspects as vague as I could so we could potentially decide on them more concretely as a team.

I think we should heavily consider how magic works with technology in this world since there should be a balance of both.

That's the reason I made magic more scientifically realistic, if it's a technological world that means science is strong

I've never been great at coming up with magic systems like this, so I'm gonna be sitting out the second job. That said, I still want to comment that there's a "punk" half of our solarpunk setting. I think we should heavily consider how magic works with technology in this world since there should be a balance of both.
It seems like some submissions keep that in mind, but yeah, we should probably make sure of that by the time the votes come in. Still, so far, I think people are generally keeping it in mind - I edited mine to be more precise, and the others seems to either mention how it powers technology as well or is mainly just to give people powers.

Regardless, you raise a good point that we should make sure we have a healthy balance. I'll probably have a job after this one to describe some applications magic has with technology running alongside the elemental job, so we can better define how they coexist.

Yeah, I'm in agreeance here. As mentioned earlier, we've agreed on a Solarpunk aesthetic and that means technology will receive some focus, but we should also keep in mind that this is still a fantasy world and will retain the trappings of it, so we're still getting more traditional swords and bows over shoot-and-cover stuff you'd expect over modern settings, a bunch of fantasy races, adventures, and kingdoms. Obviously, we're going to be doing some customization here so there's no guarantee just how much we'll end up retaining, but we will be going a bit more fantastical than just "Earth/Earth-like planet with renewable energy and underwater."

Algae sits at the bottom of the food chain, so we can easily explain other organisms developing "magic" by slowly passing the algae's properties up the food chain (If we want to be formal we'd call this "bioaccumulation but actually helpful" - Thanks Environmental Studies class!) In addition, a handful of animals already use algae's properties for their own through partnerships or predation, like corals and the leafsheep sea slugs, so it actually has some degree of realism to it.
  2. Salt/Fresh/Pure
    This one was very close to getting my first vote. It's a distinct and fitting twist on the chi/life energy concept that fits the ocean world concept really well. Like the previous vote, it also has some basis in realism, as the vast majority of organisms require water to survive and function.
  3. Tiamatite
    Didn't grab as much as the above two, but it's still an interesting concept that fits the science-fantasy approach quite well.
Is it okay if I only vote for Mana?
It'd be preferable if you did the full three votes, to keep things balanced and fair.

That's a good question, actually. Compared to the previous job, the magic systems are made with no other systems in mind and might be hard to combine. I think I'd just bring out a tiebreaker vote and pray we don't end up with a second tie.

As you can see, Mr. Robotto Mr. Robotto 's Photoluciferin won by a decently large margin. As a quick reminder, this means magic in this world comes from an algae with a special light-producing chemical the properties of the sun. A healthy diet of said algae allows you to gain magic powers of your own, something that presumably applies to the rest of the food chain as well. Keep this in mind for our next two jobs:

Job 3 - Submit an Elemental System
Yeah, that about sums it up. Give us some specific elemental powers. You draw from the classical Earth-Water-Fire-Wind, or perhaps the Chinese Wood-Fire-Earth-Metal-Water, or just make something up that's completely original. While the elements don't have to be themed around stuff like algae or the Sun, those are the source of the magic powers and could provide some inspiration.

And while we're at it:

Job 4 - Submit an Application for Photoluciferic Algae
Unlike our previous three jobs, this one is a free-for-all where everyone's submission can be accepted. Just submit a use for the magic algae. Machinery, supplements, fuel, whatever. Help flesh out the overlap between magic and technology.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and don't worry about needing to do submissions for both jobs. You can just do one if the other doesn't interest you.

Minerals my dear boy

Minerals are very valuable in this world as it allows for the development of various machinery and other stuff, minerals also provide a way to augment algea, people often train themselves to consume certain minerals as it allows them to gain an elemental boost to their algea based magic.

The known minerals elemental effects are:
Carbon: allows for electric powers
Lithium: allows for fire powers
Opal: allows for ice powers
Sulfur: allows for acid powers
Granite: allows for dirt powers
Sodium: allows for wind powers

Scientists are still trying to determine why this happens though.

Job 4
Algea can be mushed into a paste, and depending on the quality of the algea can be used as a rejuvenating cream
