The kirby will switch on his own. It may take up to a year or so, but he'll get frustrated and pick up a higher tier character eventually
Kirby can be a viable character.... Massive once beat my Marth with Kirby.

I like to play coin mode with new players. It allows me to practice techs and beat em up a little while keeping victory more realistic for them. I think taking coins provides good motivation too. Personally, I find enjoyment when I take a fat coin chunk from someone right when they grab a massive load. Also playing special modes is fun too. I like them :)

P.S. i hope your community builds :D

in my personal experience, having traveled to neighbouring states with a car full of good players to play 1 scrub, you really want to nurture new players. Melee is a 10-year old game and the remaining players tend to be really good, making the task for new players very intimidating and daunting.

it's on you to become your community's leader and
1) organize things for them
2) play them
3) teach them. this is very difficult to do correctly because everyone learns things at a different pace and learns things differently. it is very helpful if you can get said players into contact with "famous name" smashers who are willing to help via the facebook (or swf if you are so inclined .-.).
4) keep them motivated. if you love this game and they're interested, then you have to MAKE SURE they don't lose interest! there are plenty of ways of doing this. if you are clearly the best player and are stomping them and winning all their money, that's no fun for them. if you have to not enter a tournament or two so that one guy doesn't just say "why would i enter, blu link is just going to take my money anyway T-T" then that's fine.
if a few players are clearly lagging behind then focus on helping them.
if the monthlies lose their luster for players because you (or in case you aren't entering, the "best new player") are just going to win, then you can do things like set up hype money matches or pride matches between players. make it a big deal. whoop, holler, yell, scream, record the matches and put them online... you can do all sorts of things to generate hype for the players.

i have lots more to say on this subject but i think that's pretty okay for now '-'a

edit: o yeah i forgot
5) showing them their potential via videos of good players and combo/tech skill videos is very good and all, but make SURE you don't let the flood of information overwhelm them. you have to ease them into the idea that the **** they see in tech skill vids is really hard so they don't feel intimidated. you may encounter that one guy who has the right mentality and says something akin to "I want to be able to move like that." You still should be very careful that he doesn't put all his focus on tech skill and eventually become frustrated because he's a button monkey and gets beat up. Example:

"moving like Dark or Lovage is hard and takes time but he can totally do it with some practice, but keep in mind that it's also a fighting game. you got another dude that wants to beat you up that you have to worry about. Moving like that is good and eventually you'll get there, but you can't win by just hitting buttons. *Sports analogy*
(ex: Riley from The Boondocks being a ballhog and doing all those tricks but being unable to shoot and not passing etc)"

things like that.

oh for SH, have them go into training mode and practice it in 1/4 speed.
then after a few minutes, have them try to do it in 2x speed.
after that let them loose in regular mode.
I learned shorthopping from playing 10-man melee with doc, lol. (doc strat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-MN5tlM9DY)

IMO, playing some stadium mode is pretty good for learning basic tech skill and control, but I suppose it requires some interest in high scoring to really work - I mainly recommend it because it's more fun to focus on beating your record than to learn techskill directly.

I can definitely say what NOT to do, since that's all I did with my community. I maybe able to give some good ideas though.
If they are teenagers right now, then getting them into Melee is really difficult as a lot of them prefers newer things like Brawl.

  • DON'T play like a pro immediately as they will start to lose hope to ever defeating you and will lose interest in the game. Start off small and let them get close to defeating you. Also tell them that they will get good if they try to get good and not spam moves and things like that.
  • DON'T show them too many advanced techniques at once, they will try mastering all of them in a month; either that or lose interest in SSBM. Wait until they master one, then show them the next and save the hardest for last and tell them to keep practicing all other advanced techniques.
  • Show them simple and nice techniques and combos when they are new, showing them super complicated ones will scare the players away. Also give feedback.
  • Play friendlies a lot with them and keep them interested by showing them cool SSBM vids like the "Wombo Combo."
Tell them this game is probably going to last longer competitively than Brawl, CoD, MK, and probably the future SSB game.
  • Don't lie. i.e. if their wavedash is bad then tell them that you may need a little more practice.
  • Also you could mention SSBMO when it comes out and say to try it out if they have a really good PC or Mac and if they are good enough and recommend a server that may suit them well.

These may not work, but it's worth trying to try some of these. Don't want your community to die like mines because then you'll never get extremely good since now I'm mediocre at best.

We started out playing Melee, now everyone is in love with P:M. Which is okay but it lacks that Melee kind of love. Everyone (including myself) is still in high school but we all love Melee or at least like it more than Brawl. Smash fest later today I think, so that'll be fun. I'll demo some basic combos and see if anyone gets creative.

I still dislike it and would rather see more support for Melee: SD remix

yeah i would much, much prefer that people just played melee. The game is still alive and evolving and we're reaching the upper echelons of play.

It's just that some people and lots of newer players don't have the same kind of drive (as blu link called it, the love) as the older generation of competitive gamers.

blegh.

there's all kinds of guides you can look up, but let me get you the best and easiest guides i've come across

gettin' homebrew
http://gbatemp.net/topic/171901-modify-any-wii-43-below/

ack, the dios mios guide i used was on luelinks <_<
but get dios mios lite http://code.google.com/p/diosmios/

but uh, if you're a complete greenhorn to using hacked wiis it'll take a little explaining

either way i prefer usb loading melee when i do use my wii because it's faster
