Pretty happy with this result I mostly played Shulk (only went Ness twice and I only won one round with him)

For those who don't know B.E.A.S.T 5 was the largest European Smash tournament ever, clocking in at a total of over 470 entrants across Melee Singles, Doubles, PM Singles and Smash 4 Singles. I was aiming for Top 16 in Smash 4 so I was happy I managed to exceed my expectations. Unfortunately though I must admit to you guys I ended up playing more Olimar than Shulk this tourney simply because of how much Diddy saturation there was (Olimar fares MUCH better against Diddy than Shulk and there were a lot of quite solid Diddys at BEAST), however Shulk saw action against everyone else. I actually felt I could've pushed a little further. I got DQ'd against Armada in winners quarters (long story that I don't quite feel like explaining right now) which shot the wave of momentum that I had from my previous two wins (I feel like my Olimar had a genuine shot against his Diddy) and consequently I lost my loser's round match as a result (it was a super close set too). Nonetheless I'm happy with how I performed overall.

If I recall correctly, it was said that any kind of tournament is fine, from huge events to small local things.
After a point this thread might just get silly, but I think for now it's alright.

Now that I think about it, what is this thread aiming to do? Be a place where we can chat about our Shulk tourney experiences? Somewhere to find decent Shulk players? Cool place to see how he does on a competitive level? All of the above? I guess that would kind of guide how the list works.

Solid top 8 in a pretty stacked tournament. Quite a few good established UK players as well as a lot of unexpected threats. I stuck with Shulk all the way and alternated between 3113 and 1113 builds. Lost to the people who got 3rd and 4th so I'm not too fussed. Pretty satisfied with how I did overall. It always feels good to rep Shulk.

Was a fun few weeks. Had my best tournament performance on the 3rd, and after that I did ok, but started going overboard on how often I tried to go ham which I think caused me to suffer placings wise. Managed to make it out of pools in this monthly, and had some fun in teams. Though my critical thinking tends to just short out when things get really chaotic in teams so I put the team in a really bad positions or KO my teammate, which were the main causes of the loses, though also managed to do some really fun stuff, like edgeguarding two people at once, hitting both opponents with a Tree Sprout Counter, and F-smashing everyone offstage at once, and then Jdawg breaking out of hitstun first and securing the KO's with a b-air.

First customs tourney though didn't actually run into many customs. Only used Power Counter cause I haven't gotten much practice with the other customs. I got cheesed out by Wii Fit's Jumbo Hoops (ban delfino and castle siege) one round due to lack of foresight but that was really it. The two players I lost to went vanilla. Also learned to fear Meta Knight again. Whiffing against him means death.

More of a Melee focused tournament but Smash 4 was there nonetheless. Played Olimar in WFs and GFs cuz I was facing Diddy and thought it would be easy. Stormed through this tournament without dropping a game though unfortunately there's no footage. First tournament I've actually won so I'm happy about that.

Even more stacked this time round. This tournament seemed to be the uprising of quite a lot of the more underdog players, with a lot of the more veteran players getting knocked to losers (or even knocked out) fairly early. I ended up playing the guy who came 4th at DSD2 in Losers Round 3 (who beat me last tournament but I came through this time), only to play the guy who came 3rd at DSD2 in Losers Round 4 right after (who ended up knocking me out the tournament AGAIN lol). I switched between 1113, 2113 and 3113 in various matchups. As a random aside I dabbled in a bit of default Mac and 1313 Zard in pools.

This was my first Smash Bros tournament ever, and it was an "amateurish fun" tournament. I saw this as a good beginning start to try out. I was happy that I breezed through all the way to the finals, but my final opponent was a formidable Pikachu player. It was a best of 3, but I lost 2 games. Most of my aerials were blocked, and I was having trouble against Pikachu's Neutral B spam. It felt like I was shutdown without my aerials and Pikachu actually hitting me. I started to become a bit more aggressive, and ended up being shield grabbed constantly as my punishment. Nonetheless, the two fights were close.

However, there were a lot of complications in this tournament, affecting my first-time experience. There were some no-show entrants, lag fights, camera recording dying, one day to two day tournament, lots of patience, etc. Overall, this online tournament felt somewhat unprepared.

But despite all that, I actually enjoyed my first Smash Bros tournament. However, I now have some doubts using my 3DS for future online tournaments. I really wish I have my own Wii U so I can join Wii U online tournaments...

It was my first time teaming up with a Rosalina player! I actually think Shulk would be more comfortable teaming up with a more mobile and/or smaller character who can handle 2v1s better (Sonic, Pikachu and Kirby come to mind), but we still pulled off some pretty nice stuff :D
In neutral, we tried to have Rosalina wall them using Luma's jabs and aerials while I would stand back and punish/follow-up when necessary.
(btw Rosalina's throws easily lead into Shulk's Uair for early kills, especially her Bthrow!)

Fun tournament this week. Pretty much did Shulk things. I got to play Avg. Joe on stream and had a lot of fun first 2 games. Third game I made a really bad stage choice (Battlefield) and it cost me. I didn't have many good stages left to pick but I get the feeling I picked one of the worst possible options. After that I had to fight Tantalus who played some of the best wall game with ROB I've had to play against and got overwhelmed. Though I got some advice right after (take his gyro) so I'll try to practice and apply it. I switched to Pit after EE's Diddy two stocked me game two. I still really struggle with that match up.

The monthly is this week and I'm hoping I do better than last time.

I still can't handle the Falcon match-up, I really was no match for PaoZ this time =/ Gotta work on that mid-range spacing and avoid going for grabs after using Nair at low percentages (I'd just get jabbed whenever I did this)

I mostly used 1113 throughout the tournament but I switched to Decisive Arts against a Link player (Decisive Speed helped a lot!) and I took one game off of Enki's Pikachu using Hyper Arts.

And here again, we got knocked out of winners by the only other French team lol (PaoZ and Yoren, using + )
In losers, we lost 2-1 to a Pit+Peach team, after I SD'd at 10% ><
Our team worked really well though, Shulk and Pikachu have an easy time following-up each other's attacks and whenever I would be at high percentages, I could just activate Shield mode or stall with Jump mode when Shield wasn't available since Pikachu is very good at handling 1v2 situations

Really satisfied with my placings overall (Wish I hadn't SD'd in doubles though ><)

My first irl tournament! It was double elim, and I stayed in winner's bracket the whole time, so I got to Finals with two shots at victory. I wish the stuff was on stream, because I had many highlights. Back slash kill, HUGE Monado Buster comeback, several roll reads (D-smash), a vertical Air Slash kill, and I'm sure there is much more (speed/buster combos, etc). While only 12 people participated, it was still 5-6 rounds (the final two were both finals, since I lost the first finals set). Didn't lose a game until I fought a Jigglypuff in semi-finals, even though the competition was surprisingly skilled. I fought that same Jigglypuff in Finals. I actually accumulated about 10 games against this Jigglypuff, so I have some new things to say about the MU. I had fun, and... well, I will probably participate in more tournaments in the future! There's a larger event in the area that is going on later this month, so I'll see about probably doing that.

A very satisfactory result for me. I'd started to worry about my ability to play Shulk and was wondering if I should regulate him to secondary for Ness, but I had a couple of extremely solid matches against some high-tier characters that made me happy, including a guy who played a quadruple threat of Pikachu, Diddy, Rosalina, and Luigi (he shoulda stuck with Diddy tbh). I unfortunately got stopped cold TWICE by a guy with an extremely patient Fox. It felt like every time I hit a button I got punished and I missed a ton of pivot attacks. I tried my Ness in Loser's Finals but I was just outmatched. Gotta figure that character cause this is the second tournament now where a Fox has bodied me.
