Yeah, but that still doesn't change the fact that a fictional movie/book character who had been around for a long *** time before that game/movie won a poll against an actual Nintendo character and one of the most popular platformers of that era.
I don't even know why they'd have him on the poll anyways? Like was it suggested by people or were these multiple choice?
I'm baffled that anyone thought Sakurai would jump through hoops and go to like Ian Fleming's estate and be all ''Yes, may we please have James Bond shoot Mario in the face?"
Melee was being made off the back of the N64, obviously. Goldeneye had just sold 8 million+ copies, making it the 3rd best selling N64 game, above OOT, Smash Bros, Star Fox etc.
I think with Goldeneye, it actually transcended the license and gave the IP a whole different meaning within the context of gaming. Neither the Goldeneye movie, nor the James Bond license played any kind of factor with Sakurai considering 007 for a playable role in Melee. It was all just from the success, impact and legacy that the game made.
You know, I do miss the surprise factor in all of this -_-. That's my favorite thing about Smash. Everyone speculates about one thing and then gets blown out of the water! If the Ryu and Roy leaks never happened, our entire fanbase would have imploded when they were both revealed. As much as I support King K. Rool fans, I just want someone unexpected to get revealed again
-_-.
Ok, we can drop it. I think at the end of the day we all agree to about the same thing anyway, and that’s that we can’t really predict what we’re going to get.
My point is this, though: I disagree that the Nintendo fans aren’t going to be the primary results of the ballot. The ones we know are popular are in-fact popular, and that’s going to show through, despite the sheer number of people the online ballot reached. Do I think we’re definitely getting K. Rool? No. Definitely getting Isaac? No. That’s not what I’m saying.
I know I'm not part of this debate, but I don't quite get what your saying here. Are you saying most of the results won't come from Nintendo fans or they will come from Nintendo fans?
I think he scored well in the ballot, but Sakurai decided against making him playable and made a Mii Costume for him to throw his supporters a bone (or "consolation prize" as I put it).
My response wasn't intended to be part of this argument. All I wanted to do was explain what we mean when we say that Mii Costumes could be consolation prizes. I don't agree with the logic that K. Rool performed poorly or worse than we expected in the ballot.

I didn't think he had any realistic chance of getting into the base game (I'm quite certain that if they were to put in a new DK rep on their own, they would pick Dixie).
I should also add that I think if he didn't perform well on the ballot, he wouldn't have gotten the Mii Costume at all. He doesn't strike me as the type of character they would've picked on their own, so I believe it was 100% based on him being a popular ballot choice.
Which is also part of the reason why I think he's finished.
No, Lucina is Satan, Marth is the devil, Roy is the anti-Christ and the rest are their legions of demons. Shulk is just their prophet that helps with the corruption of poor Smash players.

You know I could totally see a Roy situation if K Rool gets in.
Just him beating the crap out of multiple versions of that Mii wearing his costume.
That or he makes them fight for him like Kremlings
But of course. I mean, sure, most of the swordsmen have been big Nintendo names and swords is a very common weapon in fantasy (plus all the swordfighters don't play alike), but who cares? Obviously what we need is more characters who punch and kick; can't have enough of those.

I was flat out expecting just nothing. No mention of him. Which I would have been completely fine with. But just seeing him in a role other than a playable character was pretty infuriating. Like I'm not trying to sound greedy or ungrateful or whatever, it was just a combination of shock and complete confusion.
Unless he returns to the series, I don't think he's ever getting in Smash now. Like you said, the ballot was his only chance.
In the Smash Bros. 2 Japan-only poll, Ganondorf was the most popular Zelda character, yet Zelda/Sheik was chosen, while Ganondorf was lucky to be a clone.
Popularity matters. but isn't everything.
Of course, for DLC, things might be different. Besides, Mii costumes are faster to develop.
Should K. Rool be actually added as a character, the K. Rool Mii outfit could have just been finished first.
We got 4 out of the top 10, with 2 spots being designated for particular purposes. We know for a fact that Wario would've been next in if there was more time, but also indicated that he didn't want to put too many characters from the same series, which applies to Toad also. He didn't add Dedede presumably because he was being modest, but both these two made it into the next game. He addressed the fact that James Bond couldn't get in because of "adult reasons," so he was impossible. That leaves Mew? Who by the time the next game came around was not as popular or relevant.
Zelda is really the only odd one out, and its clear Sakurai thought she was more interesting with a unique gimmick and being female. Which, if I remember correctly, he addressed in a fan letter after 64 came out. Sheik likely only made it because Sakurai liked the two-in-one concept. She's stuck around because she's popular.
To me that shows how much the popularity of characters matters to Sakurai. But yeah, it's hard to say what DLC will be like.

I feel the ballot was his one and only chance.

I agree, I think K. Rool would get in on popularity alone, and that's likely showing through the ballot. The Mii costume almost certainly comes from it.
I do have to wonder where we would be if the following had happened.
Snake actually got in Melee and potentially even Sonic.
> If Lucas had replaced Ness. The original 12 would have never been a thing, would Jiggs still be here.
Would ness have been brought back in Brawl?
And what might have happened if Ganondorf never got in.
Sorry for the late reply. I simply have them there cause with the 3rd gen remakes released last year you have nostalgia for some Pokemon fans in effect and I think some casual fans of Smash would love to see the starter thing finished. I'm going to admit Toon Zelda is because of my Zelda biased. Can't help it, Zelda is my favourite series, and I'd love to see a Toon Zelda moveset based around the phantoms she used in Spirit Tracks. And I chose Toon Zelda over Impa, simply because she as a wider appeal to people, and people weren't bandwagoning onto her like they did with Impa, when she was shown off in Hyrule Warriors.
Also if Hyrule Warriors Impa was in Smash, she'd totally be a clone of Ike
So did I get the mentality down of all the idiots who think all sword users would be clone characters of the other sword wielding characters in Smash?
I'm pretty sure I just figured out the next splatfest's stage list. In the august trailer, at one point the paint bucket inkling is wearing the splatfest tee it seems. On it is marshmallows. This is on the new rooftop stage. So I believe that will be playable next splatfest. With that I can see the other new stage and one classic stage. I would choose blackbelly skatepark. So that may be the next stage selection when splatfest comes next week.
Simply wait for Cormag to show up and recruit him, if you need the Knight Crest Aias has, just make sure to either steal it(if Colm is fast enough) or wait until you've recruited Cormag and killed all enemies with items that you might need.
I don't know if Pablo counts as a boss tho

Quick question about Tournament Mode. In case of a Sudden Death, the victory is awarded to the "most active player". What the hell does this mean? The player that's moving around (i.e. running away) the most? I'd imagine in most cases it goes to the player with the most stocks and/or least damage percent (if stocks are the same). I find that, so far, if someone takes the first stock from me..... they simply run around until the time runs out. I was wondering if there was ever a case that I could still win because I was 'most actively' trying to actually play instead of running away. Anyone know how this works, exactly?
