It is one of six generations.

Everyone here is all about uniqueness, so what's with this?
The issue here is that Pokemon are generally replaceable each Gen. Not many of them stand out enough to be iconic these days because they're all competing with each other.

Pikachu is the mascot of the franchise.
Charizard is the most beloved and popular and iconic starter.
Mewtwo (along with Mew) are very iconic reoccuring legendaries.
Jigglypuff is the odd one out, but she was popular for her time. (But please never cut her!)

Lucario is probably the most popular post-gen 1 Pokemon. He really stands out and the Pokemon that tried to replicate his success did not turn out so well. It really shows Lucario's staying powers.

Greninja is probably not gonna be iconic, he's probably in the same shoes as Jigglypuff. However, he's included since Gen 6 is the latest generation and he represents that Generation well.

With that said, I don't think I really want Meowth.

then honestly? they shouldn't be added. putting in... let's see.
  1. pikachu
  2. jigglypuff
  3. charizard
  4. ivysaur
  5. squirtle
  6. meowth
  7. mewtwo
is... absurd.
goombas are iconic - much more recognizable to a non-gamer than this baby bowser jr kid guy! why is he in instead of them?
Goombas are generic mooks and don't have any moveset potential. They appear in every Smash game as their proper role since Melee. Bowser Jr is a reoccuring major character who had as much potential as everyone else who got in.

There are several factors, iconic and importance just happens to be one of them.

I am not arguing for Meowth though, but I really don't think Gen 1 would be over-repped with a 5th character, but that's just me.

What does what Pokemon generation a character came from have to do with uniqueness?
Personally I don't think Meowth's particularly interesting as a fighter whether he's from gen 1 or gen 6.

So, this question is worth asking: Have aspect ratio mistakes been made before, especially in early pre-release screenshots?

This seems to be the main point against the leak right now, and it's pretty strong... unless the dev team have made amateur mistakes like this.

Out of all the generations, why should the first generation be the most repped? It doesn't make sense. There's a ton of unique characters not from Gen 1.

Lucario (and to a lesser extent, Blaziken) are pretty much the only post-Gen 1 breakouts.

Because as many already pointed out, no Pokemon outside of Gen 1 compare to the ones IN it.
Why do you think Sakurai chose to have Pokemon Trainer have Charizard, Squirtle, and Ivysaur instead of having Mudkip and Typhosion in their stead? They're not nearly as well-known.

Sakurai randomly selected a starter Pokemon from Gen 6. Sakurai cares about popularity but he's not going to add another Gen 1 because of how iconic it is.
He's not choosing the Pokemon because they're from Gen 1, he's choosing them because of their iconic status and their popularity (which goes hand to hand with iconic).

They just happen to be from Gen 1.

The point I'm trying to make here is that people are acting like Gen 1 is the king of all the gens and as such, deserves more Pokemon from its gen due to how "loved" it is.

It's not that deep.

People just merely said Gen 1 is the most iconic generation, that's it. I'm not sure what is there to argue.

No one is against adding Pokemon from other Gens.

I think the Dr. Mario stage leak is either real or a very good fake.

They even got the shading just right with Mario here.

It's right behind the model if you can't see it.

It is, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't give the other gens a chance.
No one said that.

I'm sure we'd all welcome a new Pokemon that isn't from Gen 1, but the problem is that there isn't a lot with some iconic status, as this has been pointed out.

Nobody is saying that...what they are saying is that Meowth is iconic and popular (partially because's he an icon).
Although he isn't that popular of a suggestion for Smash (which is probably why he's not in yet).

Wish I wasn't wrong all the time. I'm not good at making points, huh?

You're correct. I misinterpet things because I'm stupid. I don't know what I was trying to convey.

Eh, you couldd probably say Pichu and Wobbuffet for Gen 2.. although Suicune is pretty popular.

Metagross is reasonably well known... and Gardevoir.

I dunno I play Pokemon constantly so I'm not sure what's popular. Just what's marketed I guess.

The Pokken roster is pretty solid in terms of popularity.

Meowth should get in with a basic claw-themed moveset, then have alternate costumes of other Pokemon with similar builds.
So Meowth, then Weavile and Sableye as alts. Everyone wins. :D
I was thinking that in addition to basic claw-themed moveset, he should have something to make himself stand out from the crowd... then I thought, why not have Meowth's unique theme be based on Pokemon Trading Card Game? Meowth is known for throwing coins, right? So, why not have one special move where Meowth flips a coin to temporarily influence his other special moves?

So, Meowth could potentially have two Up+B moves, two Side+B moves, and two Down+B moves at the same time... depending on how the coin lands... heads, Meowth still uses the default variant of Side+B move but its power is doubled... tails, Meowth does the other variant of Side+B move but without the stat boosts.

If I may, the thumbnail stage select images have never been released publicly in their full resolution. The Suzaku Castle image, for example, is the same stage at the same angle, but the thumbnail image has more pixels on the top and bottom, while the press image has more pixels on the left and right. Both images feature details that are not present in the other as a result.

The new stage icons, however, are exactly the same as their publicly released screenshots, only squished to fit in the box. No extra image on the top or bottom. This means these two icons have been created with the same image released to the press, which has historically not been the case.

It's fine. Everyone makes mistakes. Don't feel bad about yourself. I have the tendency to make a lot of mistakes myself!

Team real for the Dr. Mario stage. I remember when Palutena was leaked and everyone was finding "inconsistencies" with the 2 images provided. This is probably going to be the same thing.

That Palutena "leak" was a hoax in the end though.

Didn't it turn out that leak was actually fake? The modeler provided pics and everything as a confession he faked it.

Despite her being actually confirmed, people were more or less debating on the legitimacy of the leak.

It's only a few more hours until more costumes.

Will our hopes get crushed again? Find out soon!

In the meantime, a flashback episode of A Game of Clones I wrote from when Waluigi was deconfirmed:

The loud sounds from the halls in Princess Peach's castle could be heard from the far edges of the lake outside.

Newcomers and veterans alike sat around in tables, drink in hand as they cheered for the newly introduced Little Mac. He was carried out by a crowd of assist trophy characters, ready to be given his franchise symbol and go fight.

At the table in front of the window, Sakurai and other developers sat. Sakurai slowly sipped wine while others clapped and nodded their heads.

Waluigi and Daisy clapped from their seats. Wario looked over at Waluigi and raised an eyebrow, smiling.

Daisy felt a bit uncertain, the atmosphere almost having abruptly changed in her own mind. She tried to write it off as nothing, but Sakurai's stern demeanor made her a bit nervous.

"I have given you maximum tomatoes, moo moo milk, and remixes of popular gaming music," Sakurai said. "The Mario franchise has begged for a newcomer for ages, and this house well understands who is the most deserving."

Waluigi gave a sneer and clapped. Daisy held his arm and excitedly smiled, but still felt a sense of uncertainty.

Suddenly, Daisy heard the nearby band begin to play a tune - one she recognized. The theme of the Gusty Garden Galaxy.

Sakurai raised his wine glass and looked at the tables. Several characters stood and left, causing Daisy to stir in her seat.

"Yes, yes." Sakurai smirked. "We have indeed determined the new Mario newcomer. It was determined quite some time ago."

Daisy looked to grinning Wario. She tore off a button of Wario's overalls, revealing a hidden turquoise "Rosalina Supporter" button. She slapped his face and screamed Waluigi's name, but it was too late.

Suddenly, the musicians dropped their instruments and pulled trophy guns from the ground below. They began to fire them at the remaining patrons of the dining room. Jill Dozer, Krystal, Porky, Geno - all turned into trophies on the spot.

Waluigi's right arm and left leg had been turned in the crossfire. He was on his knee, yelling "WAAAAAAAA" in pain. Daisy had avoided shots, and emerged from under one of the tables. She aimed her ray gun at the nearby Pauline.

"Why!?" Daisy yelled.

"You promised me you'd pose in your sports outfit." Sakurai sipped more wine. "Waluigi promised to star in a Warioware game. You failed your promises, and this is your punishment."

Daisy put her finger on the trigger.

"We can forget about this! Just let us go!" Daisy yelled. "Or I swear on my honor as a Mushroom Kingdom Princess I will KO your waifu!"

Waluigi looked at Daisy and shook his head.

Sakurai tipped his head back and forth.

"I can find another." Sakurai smugly stated.

Wario walked up to Waluigi and placed a tennis racket in his plastic hands.

"Wahaha! The Rosalina fans send their-a regards!" Wario stepped back and shot Waluigi's chest with a trophy gun, completely turning him. Wario laughed heartily and placed a glass dome around Waluigi while Daisy screamed.

Daisy shot Pauline with the Ray Gun, causing a sudden burst of slow motion while Pauline screamed. As the slow motion subsided, Daisy let out a help as she started to turn into not a trophy, but a sticker. Behind her, Princess Peach held a Sticker Gun.

The only thing missing from Pokemon is a human rep IMO. If you tried to rep one Pokemon from each gen it'd be too hard.

It would have to be Pikachu
Umm maybe Suicune? Or Pichu I guess.

Oh gawd, I had no clue that it was a fake :urg: Really weird how that turned out to be.

Now why would anyone go through all of this just to fool us for nothing?

Speaking of human Pokemon characters, I still stand by the fact that Professor Oak would be the absolute best choice for a Pokemon Assist Trophy, just due to how iconic and recurring he is. What would he do? Who knows. Maybe summon a Master Ball (being redundant but neat). OR

...Hear me out.

He pulls an Adam Malcovich and stops special moves from being used by the opponent. "There's a time and place for everything...but not now."
