Here's a question.
What are some games that you think aged poorly but love anyways?
I love Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Heroes.
As much as I love The Legend of Zelda, I think the original game has...aged
kinda poorly.
Several parts of the game feel rather wonky. There are a lot of things you can do in the game that have no hints that could give you any idea that they're actually possible in the first place, some of the methods required to defeat certain enemies are downright awkward (Darknuts, for example) rupees and arrows are considered the same item, thus draining you of your money with each shot you take, and I'm personally not too fond of the game's overworld map.
However flawed Zelda 1 is, it's still not a
bad game in my eyes, and I enjoy it for what it is. I simply can't dislike what is the very beginning of my favorite game franchise of all time.
Besides that, one other example comes to my mind, and you already know which one it is:
The original Half-Life's graphics haven't aged well, and I can agree that some of it's level designs are...awkward and outdated. The voice acting and outdated character models also make it hard to feel sympathy for the Black Mesa personal, or hell, even take them seriously most of the time. The Goldsrc's engine is also limited enough that some effects either fail or aren't very impressive. There
are still some scares to be had, but there's also a lot of narm to go around. Finally, the majority of the Xen levels are
infamously badly-designed. It's a short chapter loaded with very small and cramped levels, many of which are enforce plenty of long-distance platforming, giving the game an underwhelming climax. It doesn't have much going for it besides it's creepy and totally alien atmosphere.
That being said, I actually enjoy the game for those old graphics and the general nostalgic and isolated feel of it. Besides that, I have to admire that HL broke a lot of new ground for gaming. Despite aging badly, it was largely quite impressive for it's time, Xen levels aside, so what it
has achieved does still hold up today. I like playing it for it's "old" feel. Gives me kind of a nostalgic feeling, and I find the combat fun most of the time. To me it feels like I'm essentially playing a piece of history.
HL2 and Black Mesa are both far superior games, imo. The former
also broke new ground for gaming, like it's predecessor, but it's graphics, gameplay, voice work, effects and writing have all held up
much better, and the latter is simply an overall improvement on the first game in just about every way possible. The game's devs have even taken plenty of extra time to completely overhaul the Xen chapter and improve it's levels, too. A trailer for the chapter was released just last month, and it already looks
amazing. I digress, though. Even if the later entries in the franchise are much better games, I still enjoy the original HL for what it is.
