It is funny to think that Minecraft has more sales than all of the Original Playstation, All of the Fire Emblem Games ( Not counting Heroes ), XC2 sales and Wii U sales combined.
I could do a write up on the story or something but I'm not exactly in the mood.
Plus, my opinions on it are not as glowing as everyone else's and I'll probably get the same kind of butthurt I get whenever I dissect the main game, specifically "emotional" moments like the ending of the original game.
To sum it up briefly though - the gameplay was really fun aside from the mandatory side quest BS (the side quests are generally good, but gating off mandatory content by forcing you to complete SIDE content, especially in the climax of the game, is NEVER a good thing - don't try to defend this, it's just basic game design theory).
I thought some individual isolated character moments were great. My favourite characters were Jin, Lora, Hugo, and Brighid (who was also a favourite of mine in the main game).
....But the actual story? It was pretty weak. And while I won't say the main game had an amazing story either, it definitely was pretty solid all things considered. Torna has a more consistent tone, and that tone is a darker one, which I know is the preference for some people and they will like it automatically because of that, but if I had one word to describe Torna's story, it's rushed. Like, it feels really rushed. It didn't build to most of it's emotional payoffs properly, so I was left with a rather empty feeling during moments that were clearly trying to be emotional.
Additionally - and I had this fear as soon as they announced the subject of the story expansion - I really felt like I didn't learn anything substantial. This game didn't really tell me anything that I didn't already know in the main game. And the things it could have elaborated on, or the opportunities it had to give me a pleasant surprise, were not capitalised on. So ultimately, having this focus on the subject matter it did, was kind of wasted.
Oh, and one other thing - kind of not amused by a bit of false advertising on Nintendo's part. In various showcases of this DLC, they claimed we would be revisiting multiple places from the main game that would have a different layout due to the time gap...but it's just Gormott. ARGUABLY the Tornan Titan's womb if you wanna be super technical but that's just a tiny room. I found this kinda disappointing but I guess it was wishful thinking. I think we could have benefited from visiting Mor Ardain in order to give Hugo more of an arc. As much as I like him, he kinda has the Mórag/Dunban issue of not having any real development over the course of the story, but unlike Mórag and Dunban, there were some things they could have expanded upon, clear seeds that they planted but never capitalised on.
I would still say I got my money's worth though, especially since it was part of a much larger expansion pass. Like I said, I had fun playing the game, and I can just skip all of the cutscenes in NG+ and blow through that now in the near future. But yeah, as flawed as the original game's story was, I still think it had a much stronger narrative than this one.
Also Mythra is still one of the worst characters, I'm sorry. I felt a little bad for her in the ending since it's like the only time she's ever broken down like that - but again, I ultimately felt her emotional payoff was unearned and rushed, and I wasn't appropriately convinced that she had this deep connection to Milton, so her reaction just came off as the epitome of melodramatic for the sake of it. Other than that, she was as much of a stock tsundere as always, only cranked up to 11, though I did enjoy seeing her get roasted so much. I also feel like the fact she's still a stock tsundere in the main game, meaning she doesn't really develop past her "tragedy" over the course of 500 years, also kills any attempts at development here.
Assuming I get the Smash Ultimate amiibo, what would be a good amiibo name for Isabelle (got everyone else done)? It has to be up to 10 characters long, relate to her, and it can be funny (including memes) or serious.
