Melee looked bad even by the standards of the day. I can barely stand to look at it these days.

Every Smash game looks pretty bad when propped up next to other games of the time. Smash 64 DK is an abomination compared to DK64 DK, and don't even get me started on Smash Wii U's anime style faces. Link, Lucina, Palutena all look terrible.

Sakurai has a good eye for a lot of things, but character models are clearly not one of them.

Smash 4 looks really good for a Wii U.
Ultimate looks like a masterpiece.

Someone made an N. Sane Trilogy mod for PC that lets you play as Fake Crash in Hog Ride.


Really wish people would open up about how they're doing this.

They're so ugly, lol.

It's a bit too early to judge Ultimate, because some of those models have got to be placeholders, they're so bad. Wolf and Young Link are the big stand outs, but DK is objectively worse than he was in Wii U, too.

I think they changed DK and built him again from the ground up. Or maybe they just remodeled his 3DS one, I don't know.

Possibly. Former employees came out saying there's a lot of internal drama at the studio dealing with incompetent upper management, and they suspect Nintendo may just shut it down.

Nothing confirmed as of yet though.

Almost all the models are brand new. Even the ones I can't tell at a glance are brand new most likely are, too. DK's absolutely is. And it has none of the layered fur polygons, giving him a flat, clay figure look that isn't even as good as he looked in Brawl, let alone Smash 3DS.

Well DK's "canon" body in his own games isn't that extravagant in his fur. :rolleyes: still ugly nonetheless

DB was just DB, Goku grew as a character to who he was until the end of Super.

GT was just a bunch of execs ripping a fat bong that got 'em high off the success of the anime and said "DUDE, WHAT IF WE MADE GOKU A KID AGAIN"

DK has had layered fur polygons in every 3D game since Jungle Beat. If the game actually ships with DK in this condition I will eat a hat. Even Diddy Kong already has a fur shell on him, though it's not amazing by any stretch, it's still there.

The biggest oddity for me in Smash Ultimate's models so far is how they're handling Sonic's mouth. In Wii U, it was always a 2D texture. Now in Ultimate, it's a 2D texture when it's closed, but turns into a 3D mesh when he has it open.

It looks kinda odd to me. I get that that they were going for the "Uekawa smirk" but I don't think it looks good unless you were to make Sonic entirely cel-shaded to make him like the Uekawa artwork. We've never seen that in any official capacity though.

So for the record there are four mainline Dragon Ball animes.
Dragon Ball without the Z is the first, where Goku was still a kid and had a tail.
DBZ is the successor to that and the one everyone knows.
GT was the non-canon "sequel" people aren't too fond of.
And Super is the actual sequel.

They all look like Michael Jackson, lol, what else is it supposed to mean? Robin's face, in particular, is soooo much better in Ultimate and all they did was changed his nose.
