There haven't been many character designs out of Monolith I've liked in recent years. Many of them seem pretty generic JRPGish and rather overly anime. Pyra being a great example. I don't believe character design to be one of their strong suits, which for a Nintendo subsidiary is strange.

However, I'm really digging the design of the character in that concept art for their next project.

Eh, the hip armor and the added pants are a big improvement but the rest of the doodads feel a bit cluttery. Covering the cleavage in copious bling doesn't really get rid of the giant boob problem and the other add ons are a bit much. I feel like a design partway in between this and the original would be best.

I still dislike it, but that really is an improvement. I just don't understand how they went from Shulk and the gang to Rex and Pyra. Maybe the character design in the first wasn't amazingly special, but with 2's it's just offensively generic.

I'm not huge on any of the XC2 cast getting into Smash (which would probably just be Rex and/or Pyra) simply because as it stands now, while the game itself looks good, I don't much like their characters. :/

I'd like to clarify, though, that I'm not some overly-stuffy sex-negative person when criticizing Pyra's design or anything. Far from it.

It's just, there's literally only one reason she's dressed that way, and it has nothing to do with the game itself, if you catch my drift. There's no reason for her to be half naked in-universe and she's clearly designed with fanservice at the forefront (as if her being drawn and designed by a hentai artist wasn't enough).

But even then it wasn't that sort of character design that brought Fire Emblem out of total obscurity. It's just that Nintendo actually gave a damn about marketing it for once, while IS made Awakening a really accessible entry point.

Though that isn't to say Fire Emblem doesn't have its share of design issues. Looking at you, Nowi and female Nohrian armor design.

I'd argue that Tharja, Olivia, and Nowi would qualify, though the former two are at least somewhat justified (one is a sorceress living in the middle of a desert, so wearing breathable clothing is expected, plus Validar had something similar, while Olivia is a dancer so being a bit more showy isn't too much of an eye opener).

No excuse for Nowi though...especially getting into the squickiness of it.

Fire Emblem survived because of advertisements rather than designs.

Also, if any of Nintendo's newer female characters are any indication, I think it's Nintendo knowing their audience. Especially with the amount of attention their female characters have been getting lately.

I'd argue that it does harm, but not in the way you think. In a vacuum, Pyra's design is "just a little skin" (which it really isn't but I digress), but when looking at female character design as a whole, she is but one more character who's sex appeal is amped up for no reason other than to be sexy in an industry absolutely flooded with them. She is nothing more than an object and that's a major issue.

inb4: Someone mentions how guys are objectified too

There is so much more variety for the design of male characters, being designed for sex appeal isn't the standard, it's just a decision. Whereas for female characters deviating from conventional beauty norms is such a rarity, it's ridiculous.
