I want so very bad for Nintendo to succeed among the masses again, but their price range on this device is not only unusual for Nintendo, it's terrible for western markets. A lot of people don't have the money to drop on a 300$ system, and when you can go to GameStop and snag an XBO or PS4 at the same price range with games and other things bundled with it, it makes it harder for Nintendo to stand out. The portable nature is a good idea, but most people in the west prefer to play their home consoles on their huge HDTVs, it's not like Japan where portability is everything.
Not only this, but when you buy an XBO or a PS4, you get a vast array of modern multimedia functions for video and music as well as the ability to stream your games on Twitch. You get a robust online system where you can text your friends or party chat with them whilst you play others games, and unless Nintendo starts stepping up their game here, the 300$ price point is just not gonna hit home with consumers.
Then we have the controllers being 70$ and 80$ respectively, all for things like motion controls and HD rumble, which no one really asked for. I'm not saying it's bad to include these persay, but when it adds to the cost on this level, I consider it a bad thing and not worth it. Nintendo needs to find it's niche against XBO and PS4, but having controllers more expensive than those consoles for motion tech seems really questionable, especially when they didn't hit that 250$ price point which made Wii so competitive. To top this off, they are repeating a mistake in which there will be no bundled game which is unfortunate because partly what helped Wii become such a huge success was bundling a game that demonstrated the hardware of the console well that anyone could get into and play despite if they were experienced with games or not. I notice Mario Kart 8 is going to be a full 60$ instead of something more reasonable, and all I can hope for is they will offer a 20-30$ discount for those who already own it on the Wii U via eShop.
With all that said, you have to purchase a 300$ console in the middle of a generation with no game included with expensive controllers, even if you can separate them it's not the same as having two separate full controllers, and for some aspects you need to buy an accessory to make that work effectively anyway. The competition has a better price range, wider variety and the games are cheaper. I just don't see how Nintendo is going to be able to compete with this when they are doing everything wrong about the price.
It doesn't matter really if Nintendo fans eat up the Switch, because they will always eat up Nintendo's products. What lets me down however is that Nintendo is throwing away a good idea by going too expensive with it as I want them to be successful with the mass market again for home consoles.
