Wait what? Is this on Wii U? The game played fine to me. There were a few bugs I found but they all related to item physics, but it never ended up being straight up broken.

Not incredibly surprising, considering all the problems they ran in just trying to get it up and running there.

Yeah, not too surprised either. The game is made in the same exact program I use and it doesn't natively support gaming systems. I'm a little worried about my own game if I ever put it on a console.

Leif is one of my favourite Lords visually and in terms of personality, Roy's personality is dull and he's genuinely useless. Hell, when I used say, Eliwood, I had a very hard time killing enemy units but it's because of Eliwood being a jack of all trades, something that doesn't work well in FE. The problem isn't neccesarily that Roy isn't a map clearing Lord, but how he's a garbage tier unit overall. Low stats, low growths, can only do chip damage, gets countered by said chip damage which is bad as enemies in FE6 have the same hit percentage as you, has low defence, can't double and promotes at the end of the game along with the only weapon he can kill stuff good with. At least Leif has some stuff to help him such as no fatigue and skills

Roys inclusion in Melee, along with Marth’s helped put Fire Emblem on the map for Western gamers. A long time fan of the series, Sakurai has a deep affinity for the series. Reportedly, he sung the theme song for Fire Emblem (Iwata Asks).

Fire Emblem was a series that was going to receive representation in Melee no matter what. It is the only non 64 series to receive a separate series category on the “If there was a Smash 2 poll”conducted by Sakurai before Melee’s announcement (for comparison’s sake Metroid was lumped together with the “Other Series”) The Fire Emblem series itself received support, but the characters weren’t individually highly requested.

Nearing the end of Melee’s development, Sakurai decided to add clones in order to beef up the roster. This is because Sakurai wanted to appease fans of other popular characters, and because a common complaint about 64 was it’s roster size (and lack of diversity).

Initially Sakurai was hesitant, but after playing through the prototype he decided that Roy was a worthy inclusion. His fire properties and inexperience as a swordsman stood out to Sakurai. Below, is a full translation of Roy’s Melee character page.

Essentially, Sakurai decided on Roy not only because of promotional purposes but because he saw a potential clone moveset with Roy, and he liked the character.

There are more variants of that source, but it was my first find when needing one.

Sakurai is an avid Fire Emblem fan, having completed all titles in the series, including all three routes of Fates. If he thinks Roy's a good pick and a good character, and he's in charge of representing Nintendo's history as well as he can, he's a better authority than any of us.

I don't see how you can base your profile on Anna (one of the most one-dimensional characters in the series who is among the vast majority of useless Awakening units as one of the most useless when she finally is playable with an annoying sidequest recruitment requirement, god knows why anyone acts like she's important just because she's a recurring shopkeeper) and claim one of the more interesting characters in the series is completely bland and useless. I can give you a bunch of interesting Roy quotes and why I think his character is more interesting than others if you want.

I like him because he's a lot more down-to-earth than other lords. He has a nice balance of awkward and triumphant moments, his supports are really engaging, he has passionate speech and a rhythm to it, and he's really outgoing and nice. Passionate and outgoing =/= dull and useless. I love his banter with 6's villains and how determined he is to bring true peace to the world. People kill for that kind of personality in the real world. He's a bitterweet and enjoyable twist on the noble hero.

Roy's weaknesses aren't his stats. His growths and stats are excellent, especially for FE6 where he's only outclassed by units like Karel and Fa in those regards and quite a bit above others. It's his awfully late promotion and the GBA games lacking special lord qualities (command stars, innate support bonuses without conversations, good lord skills) that hurts him and makes him less than best. You're bashing the character's viability in ways that make me hard-pressed to believe that you actually know his weaknesses or play classic Fire Emblem games, rather than in areas that make it believable.

Funny that you say he's genuinely useless, he accomplishes more than anyone else in Elibe as a hero. Measuring up to Hartmut is impressive, surpassing him is even more impressive. He is one of the most well-accomplished and heroic lords in the series. Gameplay-wise? I'll get there soon, don't worry.

Enemies in GBA Fire Emblem are far from the same hit % as the player, I would at least believe you if you claimed that for Archanea. In a game where the player's army has consistent hit rates of 80-100 while enemies lean towards 20-60 and only get worse over time, it's not anywhere near close. Wolt is a good example of chip damage exchanges, not Roy.

Roy's speed is good and his defense is simply average, which his HP and dodgy stats make up for. You say he can't double anything, but he doubles archers/spearmen/knights right off the bat, and then brigands/cavalry with 1-2 levels in speed, then naturally doubles literally everything after the ball starts rolling on levels. You are given the means to easily ORKO or 2RKO all of these via Armorslayer, Rapier, Killing Edge, and even plain old iron swords. He makes an excellent support core and boss slayer on top of that.

You do need the Sword of Seals to really give Roy some oomph and give him the means to truly stand out besides good utility, but I don't see how that's an issue. I never had to use it much and got by on other weapons really well, without ever using Hammerne on it, despite only having 20 uses. I like the Sword of Seals and its deal much more than how FE7 lords were handled with random final chapter weapons that aren't that good, among some others.

Roy doesn't stand out in terms of viability, but he's not anywhere near worst or useless. Only people without fundamental FE knowledge who don't finish FE6 or earn the true final chapters and best ending seem to struggle to use him and complain about him, and I know many who never have played FE6 and make it clear they haven't or just go off the "yeah he's worst lord" bandwagon and never really say if they played it or not. Everyone I personally know who has played FE6 through suggestion or draft runs thinks he's at least good, and that's dozens of people. They're not simply pressured by me to say so, since I'm much less Roy-biased on the surface on other social media than Smashboards, and I'm pretty chill on anyone stating his flaws as long as they don't claim he's an entirely worthless character or that he didn't earn smash inclusion.

Leif is similar in personality and design to Roy, which makes me even more suspicious of your claims. I will say that Leif is a better lord in terms of viability and has more going for him gameplay-wise than Roy, but not nearly as much in terms of series representation, importance as a hero, or personality.
You just say "no fatigue and skills" very vaguely, not even noting his even bigger strengths. It doesn't even give me the impression that you've ever booted up Thracia 776 or used Leif in Genealogy.

You had a hard time killing enemies with Eliwood? He destroys brigands and other foot units, and his rapier covers all else. Killing should be far from an issue with Eliwood. Anyone with good FE fundamentals will make great use of him and realize that balance and jack-of-all-trades features, when handled well, work well. He's powerful, just not as novice-friendly as some lords.

Take it from someone who has played through all games besides Fates several times (I have plans when it's out in NA) and regularly draft runs/LTC's/speedruns/challenge runs/hard mode runs. I've done all of this for five years. When someone sounds like they're fresh from r/fireemblem's batch of special snowflakes trying to fit in and bandwagon something I've heard and disproved a million times who adds suspicion with every line, I can see right through it. Nothing but Awakening/Fates on someone's profile and sig subtracts even more.
I don't sugarcoat character viability. I would be honest if Roy was actually bad. I wouldn't main him in every Smash he's in if he was remotely close to boring, useless, or unlikable. I would main someone like Ike, Wario, Meta Knight, Fox/Falco/Wolf, Lucario, Yoshi, Marth, DK, Captain Falcon, Snake, or Mewtwo instead if he wasn't such a cool dude. Characters who I'm really drawn to via who they are in source material and smash portrayal, similar to Roy.

Not to mention that the people who did dislike Blue's collage...Might not have even been fans of Anna. Here's the biggest reason I feel like why the thread is okay with Anna and they weren't okay with this. The age of the characters. Anna=adult Fumi=child

My intention wasn't to label all the people who were creeped out as being Anna fans. The problem is that nobody minds a good chunk of the group regulars being obsessed with Anna, but take issue with the Fumi-chan collage.

And even though I think character age is fairly irrelevant in this case (Yes, it does clearly add a major issue to the Fumi-chan obsession, but fact of the matter is, you guys are just as obsessed with Anna)......is Anna's actual age even specified anywhere? Because I can't find her exact age anywhere, just a birthdate. And knowing Japan's tendency to make teenage characters look like adults (Roy is canonically 15 in Binding Blade, and he looks like an adult man in Smash), I think there's a pretty decent chance that Anna isn't legal, either.

I like the story in Adventure Mode, I think my issue was just some of the writing was a bit cringe. The cutscenes can sort of drag a bit too.


Hoping the eventual sequel's writing is better though.

I felt it was always obvious in the Rare design that it was armor.

It's the Paon design that complicated things, since they removed the glossiness and made it less gold and more skin-toned.

I think Paon intended it to actually be his stomach.

You can get it on Steam as it doesn't have any of those bugs. Or alternatively stick to Classic Mode where there is no story. The game is honestly pretty fantastic on the game side.
