2nd no one from he series other than baby bowser, baby mario, and Kamek have any importance.
No one likes baby characters and Kamek is an ascended mook that isn't even that important in general. Let yoshi stay his own thing because there isn't a necessary character from he series.

I always thought that a 2nd Yoshi rep could be Baby Mario riding the Stork/Poochy, and give them moves based off of the Island games, like spitting watermelon seeds, or using fuzzys or something of the sort.

Red's Neutral B makes him spit fire
Yellow's Down B hitbox hits all grounded opponents
Blue can jump infinitely

Because people need a reason to justify a certain series receiving one or more playable characters, though honestly some series genuinely doesn't have enough representation like the DK series for instance.

Characters however need to stand on their own merits to get in and not because they represent a series.

With DK it makes sense since he was always more or less his own thing, DKC was a thing and he didn't start making more appearances with Mario himself until MK.

I think it was A. to make the starter roster all their own series and B. the Yoshi series just came off from Yoshi's Story, which didn't have Mario at all so it seemed like he was going his own way.

It would go a LOT better if they gave him his own villain. Like make Kamek the final boss instead of contriving reasons for bowser to come back.

Actually, Yoshi is in no waycseparated from the Mario franchise
Mario, Luigi, Bowser, etc all appear in the Yoshi games
The only difference is that Yoshi is the main character but then Luigi should have his own series separated from Mario if that was the case
Smash is to blame for why people see it as a different series

My BIG question about all of this is...was the guy uploading TAS speed runs making money off the videos? If yes, then I think Nintendo isn't 100% wrong with this (More like 80% wrong, but not 100% wrong to go after that guy).
