I'm curious about one thing. We never play Smash on HDTV's because of the lag caused by converting the video type. However, now we can play Project: M on the Wii U, with a wired Gamecube Controller. Does this mean that we will finally be able to play Smash in HD, or does the vWii still have the HDTV lag?

Not sure why anyone's surprised with the player choices. They said they were chosen for maximum hype, not for who's most likely to badmouth the game if they don't like it.

it's really pathetic people are UPSET about the GCN adapter and accuse the smash community of being too whiny and refusing to play without GCN

Nintendo makes money, people are happy, and everyone plays the way they want. What the hell?

Note*: I didn't see anyone here saying that, just on other forums.

I am glad I don't need to relearn smash though. Just getting off tap jump was a *****.

HD lag only happens when you mix-and-match HD and non-HD-native devices together.

If your TV is HD by default, then there will be no lag, because the WiiU is HD by default. The WiiU actually has to do an extra process to convert it's output to analog.

Wow. I am speechless. Real wired controllers, the invitational has good players, good announcers, homage to the competitive community for grand finals... This is a legit move on Nintendo's part. All my respect.

Oh, and money.

I'd expect for the future tournament-wise you'll see what is similar to the BenQ MLG monitors. Something that is HD but has as minimal lag as possible. Another Big reason those games were never switched to use HD monitors like other games is neither of them had a true HD output. The wii had component cables but the system itself did not output an HD resolution.

Since there's going to be a lot of tournament participants using oddball characters they're not used to... it's going to be really fun (and STRESSFUL) for everyone involved. It's kind of crazy to think that someone like amsa might end up using Marth AGAINST Ken, or something equally crazy.

I'm gonna stick my neck out right now and say I think Zero and PPMD are going to end up being in Grand Finals.

Kinda sad about no Peach, Ike or Yoshi, though.

I think players like Ken, KDJ, PewPewU, PPMD and Hbox all have an equally good chance at getting to Grand Finals. They have a very strong foundation of fundamentals like spacing, timing, and pattern recognition that will serve them well regardless of the unknown frontier they'll be playing in.

Hbox is actually my favorite here. I love PPMD and Toph to death, but players whose success has been largely earned thanks to technical skill might be at a slight disadvantage when that tech skill no longer applies. Very slight, but present nonetheless.

Guess I don't have to adapt to a new controller for Smash Wii U, even though I wouldn't have minded that. After all, there's the 3DS version.

Anyway, this is pretty good news for... pretty much everybody. It's always nice to see Nintendo approaching the fans like this.

Awesome! Gamecube port woot woot. But no M2K.. no Mango.. no Armada. Wai. Half of those people I was like "uhhh, okay they are good.. but definitely not the people I would throw into a top 16"

I got a little teary eyed :') Always remember that none of this would have even been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Smash community! We kept voicing our honest thoughts and opinions and Nintendo finally listened and realised how important we actually are to them! Just think about what our affiliation with Nintendo was just a year ago now look at us! So many of our requests are coming true and they have even went out of their way to organize a huge event for the next installment in the franchise with us in the center! We did it guys! The hype! The hyyyype! #thankyounintendo #thankyousmashcommunity

So the actual rules for this is actually pretty freaking awkward. But Its actually a lot better then I was expecting, With an actually decent list of players, GameCube controller support, quality casters. Players being forced to pick one character is probably the worst decision though, seems to me it would limit the roster of characters we see more then anything else.

There are several players on the list who I've never heard of but M2K isn't in. Pretty legit.

They are awkward. But they serve a purpose. They manage to showcase both the competitive spirit of Smash, and all the gadgets and gizmos available to the more casual gamer that traditionally watches E3 instead of EVO. They're hitting all their target audiences as closely as they can.

The time has come! Nintendo has just announced details of the Super Smash Brothers Invitational @ E3. The ruleset, players, and commentators have all been introduced through a YouTube video uploaded today. There is a special announcement waiting for fans at the end of the video - be sure to watch until the end!

The Players

The players chosen for the E3 Invitational are listed below, in order of appearance:

Lilian "milktea" Chen
Hugo "HugS" Gonzalez
Ken "LiquidKen" Hoang
Daniel "LiquidKDJ" Jung
Neha "Lilo" Chhetri
Hendrick "DJNintendo" Pilar
Kris "Toph" Aldenderfer
Sam "PeachyHime" McNaughton
Juan "Crs.Hungrybox" DeBeidma
Kevin "PewPewU" Toy
Kevin "EG PPMD" Nanney
Dakota "TheRapture" Lasky
Cristin "Crismas" DeSaro
McCain "MacD" LaVelle
Masaya "aMsa" Chikamoto
Gonzalo "CT ZeRo" Barrios

The Commentators

The commentators chosen for this event are some of the best in the business. Any Smasher that enjoys watching tournament streams will recognize these names immediately.

Wynton "prog" Smith
Bobby "Scar" Scarnewman
D'Ron "D1" Maingrette

Wynton "Prog" Smith Speaks Up, along with co-hosts Scar and D1!

The Rules

The ruleset for this tournament is a mix of casual and competitive thinking. The bracket will be single-elimination, with matches featuring 4 players with 4 stocks each, and a 5 minute timer, with the top 2 advancing to the next round. The first three rounds will have items on, and the last round will be played on Battlefield with no items. As an interesting twist, players will select their characters through a special draft, and will then use that character for the duration of the tournament. Players will pick a number out of a hat 1 to 16, and will then pick their characters in that order. However, not all announced characters will be available for selection - Ike, Charizard, Yoshi, Sheik, Diddy Kong, Lucario, Dedede, Toon Link, Peach, and Luigi will not be participating in the Invitational.

For the full ruleset, take a look at the official Nintendo explanation!

The Gamecube Controller

Nintendo has developed a Gamecube controller adapter for the Wii U. It was only teased in the video, but this is great news for competitive Smash Brothers fans reluctant to learn a new control setup. It appears that it will also be wired! The adapter plugs into the Wii U through 2 USB ports, meaning that tournaments will not have to worry about wireless cross-ups!

So many announcements! What do you think of the players chosen? Do you like the ruleset? Voice your opinions in the comments below!

*Writer's Note* If you use Twitter, please thank Nintendo for putting on this amazing event with the hashtag #thankyounintendo. Let them know you appreciate the work they have put into all of this!

The Derrit is actually way too pumped for this. Viva Nintendo! Follow me on Twitter at @TheDerrit.
My bets are that DJ Nintendo may take the win. He is so smart and so good at adjusting.

Nice. I think this was all an excellent decision on Nintendo's part, even down to the rules and limited roster. Not everything is being given away right now, and the play style will have a little something for everyone.

Nintendo just made up for all the dumb stuff they had done in the last... 10 2 years. Nothing is better than seeing this!
