Nintendo Announces Mysterious Playtest Program

Nintendo announced earlier today that they will be performing a test. It’s related to new features coming to Nintendo Switch Online, and applications can start on Oct. 10, 8:00 AM PT. Existing Nintendo Switch Online members will be able to apply and participate on a first come first serve basis…. Provided you live in one of the select few countries participating. Those selected will be able to partake in this online playtest from Thursday October 24th, 2024 01:00 (UTC) to Wednesday November 11th, 2024 00:59 (UTC).

We will be performing a test related to a new feature for #NintendoSwitchOnline on #NintendoSwitch. Starting 8:00 AM PT on Oct. 10, existing Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will be able to apply to participate on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Those wishing to apply to participate in this test must have met the following eligibility requirements as of Oct. 9 at 3:00 PM PT:

• Have a Nintendo Account
• Be an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be registered in any of the following countries: Japan, US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain.

What could this mysterious new feature be? It's not known yet but due to the limited number of countries this is being offered to, there’s speculation that this may be a new streaming service. But the only way we'll know for certain is just to wait and see.

Imagine they're launching a movie and TV streaming service consisting of all their animated shows, Detective Pikachu and the Mario movies.

Would serve zero purpose, but would be funny.

I'm presuming that'll be less about age ratings and more to do with child labour laws, at a glance. Though, that's just a shot in the dark.

 

I don't think it'll be voice chat, microphones would be required for that I think and they're not listed

I would bet on something streaming based or maybe some some sort of miiverse type hub

 

Secondary theory: The short-lived social media app Miitomo was all the rage in my high school, used even by non-Nintendo fans, because the text-to-speech was not censored whatsoever and they could make the Miis curse up a storm.

They're bringing that back, hence the 18+.

I think it is a GCN or DS service, would add more reason to subscribe in my opinion. There was also Nintendo saying that this is top secret information to the lucky testers and the software being at least 2.5 GB or so.
