Wouldn’t You Like To Know?
Very highly doubt Studio S is working on Dread 2 since Bamco had to give up the reigns to Prime 4 a few years back. It seems like Mercury Steam has cemented itself as the 2d Metroid game team, whereas Retro picked up the slack for 3d Metroid once again.

I might be throwing all my eggs into one basket, but Sakurai still choosing to work with Bamco implies a very solid working relationship with them, Bamco's studio split lines up perfectly with them starting to work on a game that fits Smashes exact description, and it seems like things are on track for a 2027 release which slightly pushes but still works relatively well with past precedent for Smash releases.

I'm pretty solidly convinced Studio S is working on Smash, much more so than it being any other title tbh.

So what do you think happens if Smash gets a new developer and the game falls well below expectations as a result? What would that mean for the series’ future? Hope the next Smash isn’t the best one yet but the genre hasn’t had a ton of success lately outside of Smash itself.

As for the roster, I feel like the later development window opens the door to a lot of more recent characters. Maybe Elma actually has a chance now. Ryu Hayabusa is looking even more likely since the new games could actually help his chances in the main game. At the same time, I think it probably hurts characters like Officer Howard from Astral Chain since the game hasn’t really gotten anything recently.

Here’s a thought: Does a new developer mean that Sakurai’s rule of needing to originate from a game no longer applies? Since it was his own rule, the next developer might not be under any obligation to follow it if Sakurai has moved onto other things.
I think they'll keep the non-videogame rule around because i think they'll respect Sakurai's vision.
However, i think some characters like Palutena, Dark Pit, Sheik and the like might not be as safe going foward, not saying they're going to get cut, but the next director might not be as interested in them as Sakurai was.
The newcomer roster, at least 1st party wise will probably be similar to the one that Sakurai would've picked if he was directing, but i think a few characters might slip by that Sakurai might not have picked, not a guarantee, though.

By the way, here's the tweet were Sakurai said that Namco is helping him in Kirby Air Riders:

I just don't think Sakurai's or Namco is going to return, personally.

Okay, I’ve brought this up before but I think the chances of it happening are a bit higher now. What if Smash has a huge shift in roster selection and future games in the series become “Nintendo vs X”, where the other company shifts from game to game. So the roster would have an even split between Nintendo and whatever company they’re facing off against. The roster could be a manageable 50-60 characters total and there wouldn’t really be any pressure to keep one-upping their roster size in the next game. Just shift the Nintendo side around a bit from game to game and over half the roster is completely fresh each game. It would also likely make negotiations a whole lot easier if they only have to work with one other company at a time.

This whole debate about whether or not Super Smash Bros. 6 will be released is making me sad as a fan of the Super Smash Bros. series, but whatever the truth is, I have to accept it. Also something else and I'm not writing this to upset anyone, but if it is true that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is indeed the last game in the series, has anyone thought what will become of our favorite online forum Smashboards? I mean, we're going to continue to support how much we want the Super Smash Bros. series to continue, right? Because that's what I want to believe.

As long as the site is up, I’ll keep coming here because it’s still fun to theorize and it gives me an outlet to talk about our favorite characters. That just means I’ll have to fully dedicate my Smash time to Ultimate mods. If the modding scene continues to improve, it could be almost as exciting as an actual Smash 6.

I don't thnk it's going to be the last game at all. I just think it might be the last one that Sakurai directs. It's not looking good for Sakurai's return personally, i think Nintendo will want the next game out by 2027 at least and looking at the tweets i don't think Sakurai or Namco are working ont it, tbh.

Yeah, I’m just open to the possibility that this could be the last game. I don’t necessarily believe that it is. Either way, I think it will be quite some time before we see Smash again but I do think they’ll eventually make another game down the line even if it’s completely different.

Even if Sakurai is no longer the director, I hope that the next person to direct the Super Smash Bros. series will do as well as Sakurai did, as long as Sakurai chooses the right person to continue it.

As long the new director doesn't do something really controversial like cuting Peach or removing Classic Mode, i think they will be fine, i don't think any director will be as charming or involved with the community as Sakurai was, though.
Even if the new director respects Sakurai vision and doesn't include non-videogame characters, truth is that every director has it's own vision, so be prepared for some changes, even some newcomer picks might not be what you usually expect.

Honestly, after taking some time to think it over, I think we're going to be getting an upgrade to Ultimate instead of Smash 6. And this is coming from someone who would rather have a new game. There are just a few things lining up.
  • Sakurai is working on Kirby's Air Ride 2. Taking game development schedules into account, this kinda suggests that we would be getting Smash 6 in 2028 at the absolute earliest. I can't see Nintendo waiting that long to have one of their megaton series on the Switch.
  • Enhanced versions of Switch games seem to be a big thing on Switch 2. We're definitely getting more than the six that have been announced
  • Because it would still be Ultimate, running off the same game card as a base, there would be no need to renegotiate to bring back content from third parties.

It could allow Ultimate to gain a couple of additions for the updated version. Though, it is completely up to Sakurai on Smash Bros's next move.

This is from Kirby Air Riders, but if they bring Smash Run back, that is going to give another reason for a chaotic party game.

Yeah, that’s what I’m leaning towards as well. I hope they at least add enough new content to be worth the upgrade pack. Though I guess that doesn’t matter if I don’t buy a Switch 2 at all. We’ll see what games are revealed in the future or if there are any price drops that might make me reconsider.

If this is what ends up happening, I am not looking forward to debates about Assist Trophies, Spirits or Mii Costumes still disconfirming characters.

I think we're still likely getting a Smash 6, personally. I think the next smash game is likely just not directed by Sakurai or Sakurai/Namco are working or KAR and Smash 6 at the same time.
And to be fair, Smash games take 2 years of development, if Kirby Air Riders releases in late 2025 and Smash 6 in late 2027, that'd still be 2 years of development, which is the usual.
I don't think a N2E for Ultimate is out of the question either, but i think they would've anounced it already if it was happening.

Seems like we have the answer to what Studio 2 was working on. Kirby Air Riders. Meanwhile, Studio S is still unaccounted for...
Also something to add is that the people in that message mentioned to be part of Studio 2 have also worked on a racing game series, Ridge Racer. That solidifies it for me.

However, i think some characters like Palutena, Dark Pit, Sheik and the like might not be as safe going foward, not saying they're going to get cut, but the next director might not be as interested in them as Sakurai was.
TBH I don't think a new developer will make much of a difference in wheter they stay or not. Sakurai didn't even add more Kirby characters until Brawl, I doubt he plays favorites when it comes to character priority either.

Hmmmm…

What if Studio S was working on the Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 Edition without maybe Sakurai being involved?
If they were working on that i feel like it would already been anounced in the Switch 2 presentation with a character teaser. Them just randomly anouncing a N2E of Ultimatei n like 2026 would be weird to me. but alas, i'm not discouting the posibility, i think Smash 6 is just more likely.

Probably the same rules that got us ARMS and XC2 reps in FP2 apply, if the content is old enough, it's fair game.

that said I think we're gonna need more than 5/6 new fighters to get most people to be interested in sticking to Ultimate, and they're gonna have to cut corners somewhere to get more than 5/6 characters in a DLC pass like reusing a lot of preexisting models

Look...

This was just a guess, partially. I also wasn't fully serious, either, as neither was I kidding. Still, we could get both.

If I already have a Switch 2, I can't imagine not buying the Smash upgrade. I'm too obsessed with this series.

Though looking at things from the perspective of someone buying Ultimate for the first time... it's kinda terrifying lol. The Breath of the Wild enhanced edition doesn't include the DLC: assuming things are the same here, you're looking at $60 for the game + $20 for the Switch upgrade + ~60 for all the DLC fighters.
If this is what ends up happening, I am not looking forward to debates about Assist Trophies, Spirits or Mii Costumes still disconfirming characters.
I think they would be willing to add ATs and Mii Costume characters. Those decisions were made years ago, before the enhanced port was a twinkle in anyone's eye.

I’ve got a confession. I think I have a lot more fun speculating about Smash than I actually do playing it. In all honesty, Smash Ultimate lasted me about two months before I dropped it. It was fun for the time I played it, I just ran out of things to do and I don’t like playing online. I picked it up again for about a week each time a new DLC fighter came up but quickly dropped it again. The things that made me fully get into the game again are the Stage Builder and mods. I think I’ve actually felt this way since Brawl. Once I beat SSE, I stopped with Brawl after a couple months too until modding became a thing. I couldn’t really get mods to work properly on Smash 4 so that game fell off the fastest for me. I do still love playing the game on and off casually but the large majority of the appeal to me are the mods.

Heh heh heh heh heh heh...

It is actually more fun for me to speculate about Smash than to play it, too!

Air Riders may not even be that large of a project. It is, at the end of the day, a weird racing spin-off game. The more I think about it, the more I can 100% see Sakurai bouncing between directing Air Riders and a Switch 2 Edition of Smash Ultimate, or even just consulting on Smash. Not entirely the scenario I'd want but one I can actually see happening.

Yeah I can't see it having so much content that Sakurai has to devote himself to Air Riders alone. Ait Ride itself didn't have as much content as Melee let alone Ultimate.

I'm just not entirely sure why people are acting like a new smash is impossible all of the sudden because of KAR.
KIU and Smash 4 situation already happened, but apparently a KAR and Smash 6 situation is impossible....because?

Ranni in lore is a very capable magician, though we don't see her fight in-game. The closest would be that under specific circumstances in her quest line she'll one-shot you and kill you, and the Renalla fight is entirely an illusion created by Ranni, she's basically a magical construct Ranni makes. Because of that I think it would be fairly easy to interpret a moveset for her, and you could fill out her moveset with other Glintstone sorceries and it wouldn't be weird at all.

That said I do think the Tarnished would be the way to go for an Elden Ring character. I can see the appeal in doing Malenia, but the core gameplay of the Soulsborne games is one of their most iconic elements and is extremely influential. The Tarnished conceptually has like 20 different movesets that could all not share a single move and all would make sense, but just the core element of "stamina-based dodgerolling patience and punish fighter" would feel distinctly FromSoft and already set the Tarnished apart. If you're including a Soulsborne character, I think it would be sort of a shame to not represent the gameplay that makes the games so memorable, and it lends itself to Smash's general design philosophy best.
Ah, I see. I do agree on that point - Sakurai generally tries to represent a series' core gameplay, and doesn't worry too much about blank-slate avatars, as evidenced by the likes of :ultvillager: :ultinkling: :ultpokemontrainer: (And others probably, but I can't rattle them off from the top of my head). Hell, he even managed to get Hero, despite DQ's long-standing tradition of not letting them in crossovers - The series' usual crossover rep, Slime, was only his Plan B if Hero wasn't allowed.

That said, there does seem to be a couple exceptions to the "player character first" mentality - Namely, Sans being Undertale's sole representation and being met with tons of hype, because he's Sans and is just that beloved. Sans' popularity is a whole new level of virality and I don't think there's any Elden Ring characters that are that popular, but I have heard that some of the other characters I mentioned are still extremely popular in their own right, which is why I mentioned them.

That said, unless the likes of Ranni or Malenia or whoever else are really are that overpoweringly popular, I am inclined to agree with you - Soulslikes have a very distinctive sort of gameplay that would set the Tarnished apart from the rest of the roster

Something I mentioned before is that I'd like for the Tarnished's moveset to include the Dark Moon Greatsword. A version of that sword appears in almost every Fromsoft game, so I think it'd be neat if it was included in some way in Smash. It's also obtained in Ranni's questline, which last time I checked, leads into the most popular ending according to Steam. Give the Tarnished some Cold sorceries and they could have an interesting gimmick of building up Frostbite in their opponents, causing massive damage if it's allowed to build up.
Yeah, I've heard of that - Usually it's the Moonlight Greatsword, right? I don't know if there's a "default" weapon always used in the marketing, but if it's that significant of a FromSoft staple, the DMG sounds pretty close to that. If it can't fit into a moveset, I could at least see it as an item, though something that important sounds like a better fit for a fighter's moveset

So, now that the dust has settled after yesterday's direct I'd just like to chime in especially after reading all these comments and I have to say... you guys are really overdoing it with the doom-and-gloom about Smash's future.

For starters, I am pretty sure we all knew that a potential new Smash (Smash 6) would come late 2026 at the earliest, no? By that logic it would make no sense for it to be revealed THIS early. Even something like Mario Kart was only revealed a couple of months before it's release, and what Smash Bros would be revealed a whole year and a half (if even that) beforehand?
And secondly, I have to say, I think I did comment on that once, but it always looked very very unlikely that the 2021 project that Sakurai was working on would be a new Smash. And I think people saying that it was a slam-dunk new Smash was more wishful thinking rather than an actual prediction. I don't see why it's that unrealistic for Sakurai to have started working on Smash in 2023 or even 2024, it still lines up with a 2027 release at least.
So with those things in mind, I really don't get WHY people are now doom-talking Smash, all the games revealed in the direct are going to be released in 2025 and as I said, we knew already that there was no chance of a new Smash game coming out this early on. I personally am firmly on the camp that the chances of Nintendo abandoning such a successful and established franchise and the cash it brings are 0 percent.

I don’t consider it doom & gloom to just point out that I think there’s a chance we might not get a new Smash. That doesn’t mean I think that’s what’s going to happen, just that I think it’s possible. I think anyone that says there is a 0% chance of Smash ever ending are the ones being completely unrealistic. I always say it’s a mistake to think in absolutes and this is just an example of that. But I’m happy to drop the subject because I’m clearly being misunderstood if people take that as doom-posting.

It's also worth noting that both the scenarios of "Sakurai works on another game between Smashes" and "Smash releases three years into a console's lifespan" aren't without precedent. For the former, Sakurai worked on Kid Icarus Uprising for a couple years before moving on to Smash 4, and that game still released on time. For the second, Brawl was delayed a bit to polish it up and it launched at the start of 2008, a little under three years into the Wii's lifespan; Similarly, Smash 4 was dropped in 2014, three years after the 3DS first dropped. Sakurai's been working on KAR since about 2022, so it should be close to completion, leaving him to move on to Smash 6.

It's also worth noting that Smash Ultimate DX would be a major update to push the Switch 2... So why didn't they start with that? We got six full updates and a bunch of performance bumps, but no Smash. And the longer the Switch 2 lasts, the less it makes sense to update older titles, as people will be hungry for actual new games instead of glorified DLC. If it's gonna take a couple years just to get to SSBU DX, you might as well go in on a proper Smash 6 anyways. And regardless, Sakurai agreed to do Brawl just because he didn't want Smash Wii to be left as a Melee port; He doesn't strike me as one to just shrug and go "eh, let's just do an SSBU port."

I still don't understand why we wouldn't get a new Smash all of a sudden. Even if it's later than we anticipated, comparing an upgrade pack's 10 dollars for 35 million people (350 million dollars) to even selling Smash at 70 dollars to just 10 million people (literally double that at 700 million) is a no-brainer.

Like I'm still pretty convinced that Namco making A NINTENDO-CENTERED SUPPORT STUDIO NAMED STUDIO S, hiring through to June last year, and suddenly making 4 more spirit events for Smash during their hiring wave means they probably started SOMETHING related last year, even if it's just preliminary work, like I could see Sakurai supervising that while he full on directs Air Riders, then once that's fully finished he shifts to full director on Smash.

It's not like Smash doesn't have characters that are no-brainers to keep, they could just be working on stuff like that while Sakurai wraps on Air Riders, which has probably already happened or happens soon.
I think anyone that says there is a 0% chance of Smash ever ending are the ones being completely unrealistic.
Buddy, it literally makes billions of dollars. Anything's possible I guess, but like I really doubt Nintendo would wanna pass up on free billions going forward.

I am curious if another developer would be able to live up to Sakurai if they took over. Other platform fighters have struggled quite a bit and never really lived up to Smash. That’s not to say it’s impossible, I just don’t know who that developer would be.
One would hope that at least some of the people that have worked on Smash with Sakurai would have been able to pick up his processes. The smart move would be to promote someone from previous games to the role.

Also, ya know, he made that whole web series telling everyone how he makes video games. :p

So what do you think happens if Smash gets a new developer and the game falls well below expectations as a result?
They'll learn from the experience and do better on the next one.

Does a new developer mean that Sakurai’s rule of needing to originate from a game no longer applies?
A horrifying possibility. But a possibility nonetheless.

The only other thing I’ll say on the matter is that I don’t think just because something is profitable means it has to go on forever. If the developers no longer have passion for the property I could understand wanting to end on a high not instead of releasing something that doesn’t live up to expectations. I’m not saying that’s what’s happening (and it probably isn’t) but I can see the logic in it. Plus, it’s not exactly free money. Smash takes an immense amount of work and development to make and those resources could instead be used trying to create something new instead of dragging something out. I do think we’ll probably see Smash again but those are my thoughts. If you feel otherwise, that’s cool and we can agree to disagree.

Enhanced versions of Switch games seem to be a big thing on Switch 2. We're definitely getting more than the six that have been announced
Yeah, this is a big one.

The main argument for Ultimate Deluxe was the existence of MK8 Deluxe(and other Deluxe Switch games like NSMBU and Pokken). The main argument AGAINST that argument was always "Those only happened because the Wii U flopped. And the Switch wasn't backwards compatible. There's no reason for Deluxe editions when the Switch was so successful and the Switch 2 is backwards compatible".

A logical argument, but still a speculative one.

Then the Switch 2 comes out and Nintendo basically goes "We're creating an entire ecosystem for upgrading Switch games to Deluxe Switch 2 games." So the main argument against Ultimate Deluxe is no longer an issue because even with the Switch being as successful as it was and the Switch 2 being backwards compatible, Nintendo is still doing Deluxe upgrades.

Because it would still be Ultimate, running off the same game card as a base, there would be no need to renegotiate to bring back content from third parties.
It depends what their specific licensing agreements say. But one would hope that would be the case.

What if Studio S was working on the Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 Edition without maybe Sakurai being involved?
Or even just not involved in the day-to-day and is only in an advisory position.

If they were working on that i feel like it would already been anounced in the Switch 2 presentation with a character teaser. Them just randomly anouncing a N2E of Ultimatei n like 2026 would be weird to me.
It's also worth noting that Smash Ultimate DX would be a major update to push the Switch 2... So why didn't they start with that?
shrug They already announced 6 S2Es in that Direct. There's such a thing as spreading out your content so you don't have dry spells.

There's a reason why Nintendo doesn't just dump all of it's games onto the Nintendo Online services each time a new console is added to it. They want you to keep coming back.

Mario Party, 2 Zeldas, Kirby, Metroid and Pokemon are enough to tide people over through launch.

Alternatively...maybe it's just not ready yet?

you're looking at $60 for the game + $20 for the Switch upgrade + ~60 for all the DLC fighters.
Yeah, but, if you're buying the upgrade, you probably already HAVE the Fighters Passes.

If Sakurai does start work on a full Smash 6 after the current Kirby game releases / is finished, I could see him maybe working in tandem on it with some sort of successor, so to speak, where said second lead maybe also joins him for presentations and whatnot to ease the fanbase into accepting them as the series' full new lead after Sakurai retires (or at least fully retires from smash, assuming he hasn't already done so).

If this is what ends up happening, I am not looking forward to debates about Assist Trophies, Spirits or Mii Costumes still disconfirming characters.

To be fair: so far across this series, it's been consistent that Assist Trophies and other NPC-fied characters don't get upgraded to playable status on the same game- implying these characters are considered one and done after the non-playable role they were given. Mii Costumes could be applied the same logic, especially if there's a full outfit for them.

Spirits meanwhile are fine enough, as long as they don't have a major non-playable role in Smash Ultimate already.
