That sounds worse when you put it like that. 3 teams working on CoD, each team's title releasing a year after one other and when one team is finished, they immediately go back to making a new CoD?
True, but I was going to bring up how annual sports games have it worse: Unlike CoD, they are still only developed for one year despite the game industry having strayed away with that, and as a result they're messes of bugs and poorly implemented features. It's getting to the point where NCAA Football is starting to get better reviews than Madden, because the NCAA devs take last year's Madden and fix as much of the code as they can rather than trying to implement the new Madden's features.

So what games do you expect to see in the Switch 2's launch year?
Based on the usual release schedules, I think we're due for a new Kirby and Fire Emblem, especially since both series have been growing quite a bit during the Switch era. Metroid Prime 4 and Legends Z-A are almost certainly crossplat releases. Usually we also get a big Mario game and some quirky new IPs in the launch years.

We just got Echoes of Wisdom and we're getting XCX DE early next year, so probably nothing from Zelda or Xenoblade. Also, Splatoon 3 didn't start development until after Splatoon 2's final update, so given how recent Splatoon 3's Grand Festival was, we probably won't see anything from Splatoon either.

Smash 6 could go either way. Usually Smash releases about two years into a console's lifespan; The only time it was a launch title was Melee, which is like 20 years old and rushed as hell. That said, Ultimate was a Smash success and Sakurai is working on a secret project right now, so things could line up for a launch title Smash for a change. Then again, it could easily be a separate unrelated project like Kid Icarus: Uprising was. I think we'll have to wait and see.

No?

I assume they just didn't want the list to be 500 games long.

Because it should be.

New Smash should come out in the first year and continue to get DLC for the life of the console.
Here’s a question, do you count it if you’ve only played the game for less than an hour or would it only count if you’ve put a substantial amount of time into it? There’s a few games here I’ve played around with for a tiny bit but I’m not sure whether to put myself down for having played it with such a short session.

I don’t think the new console needs Smash in its first year. I presume that it will have Metroid Prime 4 as an eyecatching AAA launch title (simultaneous release on Switch 1 and 2), a new Mario by the holiday season and a new Mario Kart within a few months of release.

Mario Kart alone feels like it would justify letting Smash take a backseat for a year. You got your big multiplayer vs game, appeals to casual and competitive players alike, yadda yadda. Smash probably hits the scene a year or two afterwards when it can shine as that year’s definitive “game to play with friends.”

I feel like we may be cutting the window a bit close for Smash to be a launch title anyway, assuming Switch 2 drops sometime midyear 2025 we aren’t letting Smash have the progressive building hype cycle that has been typical of the series since Brawl. Ultimate’s was notably shorter but revealing everyone at E3, and the relative low number of newcomers made this easier.

2018 was Smash Ultimate’s year. Sure other games came out, but the bulk of Nintendo’s focus for the whole year was on Ultimate. Just look at their e3 direct that year, half of it was Smash.

Smash hype seasons are like a cultural event at this point, it draws a lot of attention. In a year with a new Metroid, a new Pokemon, presumably a new Mario, a new Mario Kart, and a whole new flipping console, I don’t see the harm in holding off on the big guns for a little.

I think the next year will be devoted to hyping up the new system and some big hitter launch titles first, then we can spend a year on Smash.

I do agree with Louie G. Louie G. that Smash is not needed for a first year release, let alone as a launch release. In fact, I also agree with Noipoi Noipoi that Nintendo should make some good games before the next Smash Bros. comes out on the new system. Some things are best saved for last, or in this very case, saved for later.

Sometimes you forget how much a miracle the SquEnix side of Smash is until you watch anyone else try to do something with Square's stuff.

But seriously though why can't he be an assist trophy next game

Will there be new games released on the Switch 2? You know, like ARMS and Ring Fit Adventure were new games released on the Switch 1, so I'm looking forward to seeing new games on the Switch 2.

I'd like to believe we'll get a DK game in the second year of the Switch 2 (I'm certainly not so naive enough to believe it'll be in the first year), with potentially a Mario and Kirby game largely taking up the platformer space in that opening 12 months.

I'm not against new IPs, but I would like to see some old IPs without any new games in a while come back more. Like Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Rhythm Heaven, Golden Sun, Custom Robo and whatnot.

Might not be the best idea financially though.
Nintendo games tend to lean more mid-budget than AAA, Smash is its only exception due to all the stuff that needs to be licensed for it.

Which makes sense if you think about some of their series, WarioWare's visuals don't scream AAA for example.

Nintendo has a lot of dormant IPs, so it would be nice if they tried to revive some. Might not be the best idea financially though.
Throughout the next system’s lifespan there will be at least one dormant franchise that sees a revival. I guarantee it.

If I had to bet I’d say either Star Fox or Golden Sun. Or maybe something weird like Pilotwings.

This probably isn’t happening.

At this rate we’ll get our first glimpse at ZA in February, on Pokemon Day. Seeing as how they still need a couple months to market the game before release it’ll probably come out around summer at the earliest, fall at the latest.

So while they’re focusing on the big new Legends game releasing somewhere between May-June-ish and November, they’re also supposed to reveal, market, and release the 10th generation titles? Without both games cannibalizing each other and making Gamefreak and TPC look even more disorganized than they already do?

Yeah, I don’t see it. Say what you will about PLA and Gen 9 dropping in the same year, at least Arceus was already out before they revealed S/V.
Yeah. I think that to avoid another SV situation and to better optimize the game for the Switch 2 I myself am not expecting Gen 10 to come until 2027.

I dunno, they really like dropping new generations on anniversary years. Kinda ties the whole celebration together, and it makes for great marketing.

Gen 10 at the end of 2026 would be just fine. Even just one extra year from the usual 3 year cycle should help keep the game from coming out unpolished.

Nintendo has been reviving IPs since almost half of the Switch's lifespan. Famicom Detectives Club and 2D Metroid are two of the most obvious examples.
So far what they've done is find a studio, have them do a remake/remasters and from there make an original release. I guess the case of M&L has been special for some reason.
It wouldnt be strange to think that we see more of this treatment with other franchises such as Star Fox, Golden Sun or Custom Robo to name a few examples in the future.

They're already avoiding that by delaying ZA until next year, with all signs pointing to it being the lone release of the year vs. what happened with LA and SV. As long as we don't get Gen 10 next year that shows GF/TCPi is giving their game enough time to be developed, 2027 is not necessary.

I think it will come out unpolished and buggy purely due to the Switch 2's much more powerful hardware. They'll need even more development time to get it to run properly. Releasing it in 2027 is the best possible option. I think that the 2026 game is instead going to be a much smaller game developed by ILCA.

They’re not gonna blow the 30th anniversary on BDSP 2: Chibi Boogaloo, Riley.

Here is this stage idea of mine for a Smash Bros. game, which is Sonic themed, if anyone is interested.

The ARK from Sonic Adventure 2. It starts in one of the rooms on the ARK, with weapons and lasers to be avoided. HOWever, the fake Chaos Emerald Tails made in the game is in the background and, with a machine, uses Chaos Control to teleport the fighters to the moon. The Chaos Emerald and machine are still in the background, but however, it is a distance from the ARK, which has its laser fired from it, and the "Super Laser Piss" blows up half the moon. The moon is soon repaired as the fighters are teleported to the same or a different room on the ARK. The Super Laser Piss does heavy damage to those caught in its blast, by the way.
