Okay so the current generation of smash is decent, us current smashers are ruled by an alcholic fruit that'll sometimes put a plumber's hat on and pretend he's someone else(I <3 U Joseph), but what about future generations? Sure, we have a lot of active players now, but what will happen in 4-6 years? We have a few younger smashers like Connor, but what about everyone else?

Well I for one am gonna try and keep smash alive for as long as possible, next week starts the mark of our schools new gaming club, me as VP, and on the side recruit players interested in smash. I'm also gonna try and start local game tournaments consisting of many games like CoDMW2 and SSFIV, but I'll be playing Melee just to see if anyone is interested. I know for one in the gaming club theres going to be a huge success rate with people since way too many people like me, but I'm sure most of them will drop out when they see the difficulty in Melee or stop liking me. . . lol

Well any other suggestions or ways anyone else is trying to strengthen or Smash community? ^^

Yeah we certainly try to spread melee to our community.. but it is very hard to get new players to grow interest in the game. in my town, there are 3 players that just **** everybody else and its hard for the other players to gain confidence and the initiative to get better at the game..

but as for a future generation.. who knows.. a lot of people that play now will probably still be playing in a few years. the younger players most deffinately i think.

Hmmmm. It's hard to tell-but Kason is right-I'm not sure how to get new people interested in ssbm, especially with the appeal brawl has to noobs. Only time will tell...

It's actually pretty easy for me to recruit people from brawl to melee, its just convincing gamers who either play CoD or Halo to switch to fighters

Yeah thats the problem with most smashers, yeah you can get good, play a lot, but it actually is pretty hard to go out and do stuff

I love melée and I would play a lot more if there were anyone remotely in my area to play. I agree that this is one of the most difficult aspects of playing competitive smash.

I think I'm gonna go and research up on Dolphin and try to make a melee exclusive game engine through C+++ capable of pretty decent network play :B That might actually help alot =w=

I have some doubt..

What the hell is:
* a "melée exclusive game engine"?
* "C+++"?
* "pretty decent" online play in a fighting game? (it's either perfect or **** awful)

You'd be surprised how many brawl people you get into melee if you just ease them in

Got any tips?
Play brawl with them. Then say "Hey wanna play melee? It's kinda like brawl but a little faster, it's fun!"

or something like that. Why would someone play melee if you didn't even spend your time playing brawl with them?

Well right now w/ dolphin, online play is really slow and has to be played in lightning melee usually. C+++ is basically a programming device where you design a game engine, and i might try and design one that is built specifically for "melée". A rather complicated process and will take forever

Well good luck soju. I've heard netcode programming is excessively difficult but the prospect of online melee has me all hot and bothered

Thing is if people don't like brawl online, would people like melee online? Wait... I need to rethink this... this is melee... Meh. I guess you gotta try and see what happens.

that shouldn't be happening unless your computer can't run melee at 60fps. if your computer can't run melee at 60fps offline, you shouldn't try playing online.

i really hope melee on dolphin online would get working someday. it desynchs too easily.

it has something to do with the actual dolphin program itself that does this. either that, or the netplay portion of it that can't seem to sync up the frames in the packets it sends.

different packet info = you see different things going on in the player's respective screen

But i'm more willing to try out online with the actual gamecube as it's more accessible to people. somebody should make a program similar to the one that is used in the PSO hack but make it even better!

offline play is no trouble, its online play, it desynchs a lot and basically sucks. I'm going to try and make a program like dolphin but make it better for network play. I'm just trying to make this so I can appeal to the people who want to play melee, but are nowhere near anyone or can't travel.

And YESSSS THIS IS GONNA BE SOO MINDBOGGLING!!!! UGH I CAN IMAGINE THE LATE NITES OF PAIN AND SUFFERING WORKING TO BETTER OUR MELEE COMMUNITY!!! lol

the biggest problem is that most prospective (new generation players like me :D) melee-ers are usually in high school or younger which makes it very difficult to attend tourneys.

it's hard to convert brawl players to competitive melee because most of them play brawl for fun and when they start losing in melee they whine and complain their hands hurt.

Not entirely true. I mean, I'm not trying to deny the validity of your experiences, but I can tell you I fall into neither of these categories.

I'm a sophomore in college. Brawl got me interested in Melee, and by extension the fighting game genre at large. My first actual tournament was Apex, where I entered Brawl and got my *** handed to me on a silver platter. Still had fun. Watching Melee was so fun that I went out and bought the game, and I'll be practicing in my spare time so that I can start weeklies in November or over winter break.

Getting owned is sort of a prerequisite for improving in any game. I'm sure any Brawl player who's currently decent at the game understands this, and this is your best target audience for potential Melee players.

you mean netplay? good luck but i think the key issue lies in how the netplay is implemented onto the build. you need to create something that goes hand in hand with dolphin.

also, the last part of your post reminded me of Courage. "the things i do for love" lol

The hands hurting complaint is pretty valid. Melee has a very brutal control system. Learning to play it is like learning a sport. It takes that much energy to perform actions.

The key is to keep new players from floundering when they learn the game. Show them exactly how things work so they're not aimless. Their hands have to develop the strength to do certain things, and just like kayaking for several hours the muscles get sore at first, but eventually strengthen up for it.

As for the losing part, that would happen in Brawl too. I found losing in Brawl more frustrating. Tripping, tricksies, and camping are very frustrating reasons to lose.

Basically just get them willing to try it, and every smashfest play a little of both, don't rob them of brawl. But just do melee on the side if will. and then eventually, if they aren't scrubs. They will probably like both games equally.

I try to explain why Brawl is inferior, but they don't understand most of the things I say. They don't seem drawn in by its competitive value.

It doesn't matter how right you are, though. Let's face it; we're emotionally invested in the games we play. And emotional investment has enough power to trump even the most powerful logical arguments in the minds of most people (I'd give real life examples, but I know they'd offend people haha). No amount of logical reasoning was enough to convince me to take the leap to Melee. I had to see the game for myself, in person and in action before I took a serious interest. You can't expect any legitimate results by talking to people about Melee, it's something you need to show them.

I know what you're saying. I wasn't too enthused about Melee until I was almost "forced" to play it; the only competitive scene in my area was the game. Now I love it.

I host Melee tournaments, but people say, "It would be better if this was Brawl. Brawl is where it's at." All I can do is keep hosting Melee tourneys. Someone else has offered to host the next one, but they probably want to make it a Brawl tourney.

Should I try to talk him down, find someone else to host, or try letting them play Brawl and see if they come running back?

Thats the problem, dont tell them their game is inferior. Especially when your saying "Brawl sucks, melee is better" (In a nutshell of course) They will instantly hate melee for the sole purpose that people say its better than brawl. Just ask them to play melee, dont tell them its the better game, or they wont play brawl once they play melee. Just make the smashfest melee and brawl both.

Well I don't really know the ins and outs of being a TO, but I imagine it takes considerable effort. And I can definitely understand how you wouldn't want to put in that effort for a game you don't care about.

I just had an idea. Is there any way you could convince the other guy to co-host with you? He could handle Brawl and you could do Melee. That way, you wouldn't have to present it as an either-or decision. Again, I don't know how difficult it is to coordinate hosting responsibilities between two people, but it would give you an opportunity to ease the Brawl players into your scene.

That's a good idea, there's just a problem of time and space. If Brawl/Melee are hosted at the same time, players will miss the other game, and if they're hosted one after the other, the tournament will probably last too long (for parents).

I think I'll just have a Brawl TV going at the next one. Does that sound like a plan?

We've had annual NYU 64/Melee/Brawl tournaments for several years, but the organizers just graduated. The games club occasionally hosts small casual tournaments/events, and we've had some good freshmen just come in last year (got second place I think). I don't think anyone's going to take the initiative and organize future events, but you never know.

If you're worried about time and space, then yeah I'd just go with the side TV. The people who prefer Brawl are likely to train less for Melee, which means earlier eliminations, which means more time to play Brawl on the side. It might actually work out nicely, so long as they don't feel ostracized by other players for their preference. From the sound of it though, the players in your scene are above that kind of stuff anyway.
