So look…Pardon my immature gushing here for a sec, because I’m sorry, the news we got today very nearly exceeded every expectation I had.
It’s one thing to just drop Banjo and Kazooie, a character I’ve wanted in this game since 1999, today. It’s another thing all together to just casually tell us “Oh yeah, hey, don’t worry, there are plenty more DLC fighters coming after the Fighter’s Pass. You’re welcome.” That one-two sucker punch of incredible announcements blew me away.
And honestly, I have no doubt that King of Fighter fans went nuts over that announcement trailer. I personally had no clue what was happening haha, but those old-school sprites were gorgeous to look at regardless. I’m sure die-hard fans had a field day, and I’m super happy for you guys.
Not to mention the attention to detail that went into BK’s moveset! They really don’t look very top-tier (a lot of their moves, while faithful to their original games, look like they have a lot of downsides and weaknesses), but honestly? Guys, I couldn’t care less. They play like how I remember them playing on the N64, a majority of the music has been remixed, Spiral Mountain looks like a ton of fun to play on, Banjo “guh-huh!”s in his victory screen…Even just the amount of time Sakurai took to just talk about the BK series, going as far as to say “Hey, I know we’re competing companies, but…go buy an Xbox and play Banjo-Kazooie”.
(By the way, Candid Sakurai is my all-time favorite version of Sakurai)
Also, this is easily the best Mii Costume pack of them all. Team Rocket alone is incredible, but Goemon completely seals the deal for me! And I know Undertale fans may be bummed that Sans is a Mii Costume instead of a playable character, but LISTEN: This makes Sans technically the first playable indie rep in Smash. Complete with music! This is an enormous honor, and the entire fanbase should be extremely honored. Hey, it’s more than we Shantae fans got haha.
This is just so great. We don’t have to worry about “Oh, the Fighter’s Pass ended in a disappointing way” because we now know that whoever we get isn’t the last one. We won’t get a situation like Incineroar or Bayonetta, where everyone hated on the character simply because they were the last ones announced. And when you look at the Fighter’s Pass as a whole, regardless of who gets in last, it’s astonishingly diverse in terms of genres represented, fanbases pleased, and gameplay styles.
This all but confirms that the final Pass DLC character will 100% be third-party, so do we want to assume that the non-Pass DLC characters will be first-party?
Oh, and again, damn, that’s just the Smash stuff! SNES on the Switch and new modes for Tetris 99 (both free updates!), Overwatch looking incredible, Jedi Outcast port coming out of nowhere (???), new info on Animal Crossing, Xenoblade 1 remastered…like, come on, this Direct rivalled Nintendo’s E3, which is saying something.
(Though they still did absolutely nothing to convince me that Sword and Shield were worth buying, so it wasn’t flawless…)
Man, the hype. The hype hasn’t just been rekindled, but straight-up doused in gasoline! None of y’all salt will bring me down on this day!
