I have become tired of Brawl. I don't hate the game but I can't stand the low hitstun and speed (causing a severely low number of combos to exist) anymore. The only characters that are really fluid and remind me of Melee are Game and Watcha and Meta Knight.:urg:

3 Years ago I went to MLG 2006 in LA in hopes of seeing how good players fight and to have fun. I was owned on the first round. (I never knew there was a competitive scene for games before this/ Don't hate me :( ) I was sad to have lost on the first round so I went to the corner stand to play friendlies with others who had lost as well. I was playing others until Ken came and decided to play until his next match started. I was nervous because my friend told me about him. I almost beat him (I knew he was going easy on me. ) Ever since that moment, I wanted to get better at this game so I could play at tournaments.

I didn't know what SWF was until last year and even then I was intimidated by better players because I thought they would shun me. Now I come here to ask:

How do I get better at doing the techniques listed here? I saw the Advanced How to Play video and I still can't L-Cancel. I need a better way to learn these things but I can't seem to know what. Please help me

the simple short answer to this entire thread. PRACTICE

unlike brawl, you're not going to just be able to pick up and play melee @ a tournament level. if really want to be contender, it's going to take some time and lots of experience.

get accustomed to fast-paced inputs and make sure you understand the mechanics of the game. you'll be fine after.

Watch videos, read guides, lurk forums, etc. Try out everything you see in practice, or against other people. Think of how to apply strategies, think of what works and what doesn't work, get a better grasp on the game's physics. After a while, things will become second nature to you.

Practice makes perfect!

Practice indeed makes perfect.

Just take things one step at a time.

Oh and don't be afraid to post videos someday so people can suggest tips to you.

But at the end of the day...its all you.

but really practice because once i play as yoshi and thought wow their is almost no lag in his moves then i noticed i was l-canceling everything

take it one step at a time. start with level 1 CPU (ok maybe not lvl. 1) and keep fighting on that difficulty until you see improvements, then go to the next level. or better yet just hang out with a freind and try to have some fun

learn how to do everything in Wak's ahtp, shfl aerials into shine, jab, jump, grab, and wavedash, and how to apply it in a match.
Oh and be patient... the technical skill takes time to learn and the application might take even longer.

Oh and I told somebody this today:

Its funny, but here is my honest advice. Now listen carefully, I mean this.

The trick to becoming faster is to actually slow down.

Most people think you have to be uber fast, but not exactly true.

The trick to do a lot of tech skill (for example, aerial to waveshine) is to actually break the moves up.

First do your SHFFL dair/nair, reset the control (don't touch anything basically) and then waveshine. It works. I promise you that you will do it more consistently this way.

keep going to tournies to play friendlies with people. you don't even have to join. trust me, having a partner will double your learning rate
i 100% agree, playing with scrub players means you wont strive as hard to learn,
play with people who are better than you, the better they are the faster you'll learn, and the faster you'll get better,

me and my friend used to play all the time and we slowly got better and were like, lets go to a tourney, we got ***** by them, but then we also picked up a lot and got significantly better after that.

why do you think there are so many good smashers in cali?

every smasher has another smashers to play, the bigger the melee scene, the better the plays (usually)

I very much agree, this get you into numerous terrible habits.

For practicing l-canceling, this is what I'd do:

1. Set time to infinite.
2. Set damage ratio to 0.5
3. Set handicaps to on.
4. Plug in a controller in a another slot (not the one you are using) and set it to a human player. (the character you pick doesn't matter much, bigger would probably be easier.)
5. Set your handicap to 1; set the other human character (from step 4) to handicap level 9.
6. Go to final destination.
7. Practice your short hops; short hop fast falls; short hop fast fall aerials; and short hop fast fall l-cancels (In that order in case you already don't have the previous parts down).

That's how I learned how to l-cancel, once you get that down, try it out against level 1-3 CPU's, Once you are there, try it out in-game.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice! I've been practicing but everytime I play a human I just completely lose myself and get ***** :p

I have no one to practice with (it sucks) and no way to go to any tournies. If anyone is in los angeles please give me a message. I've been trying to find someone to give me rides but alas, no success.

Practice the techniques, and even if they fail when you try them in game, keep trying. Set good habits.

I'd want to find mango I'd probably get the best practice/training by playing him
Not right away. Practicing with the best in the world may sound great, but you might also get completely disheartened ("I can never be that good!" etc...) Find some people about 50% better than you, and when you can beat them consistently, get some new friends about 50% better. Repeat.

OK It's better in a video but that is it....
