Alright, well I entered the Wichita Bi-Weekly and decided to record all the finals. Here are the vids of me in the winners and grand finals:

Winners Finals 1
Winners Finals 2
Winners Finals 3
Winners Finals 4
Grand Finals 1
Grand Finals 2**
Grand Finals 3
Grand Finals 4
Grand Finals 5
Grand Finals 6
Grand Finals 7

I had little to no experience in the Marth match-up before this tournament, so critiques would be awesome :)

One thing I noticed personally was that I got hit by his Sword Dance A LOT. I almost always had the habit of spot-dodging it (bad idea) which I believe ultimately cost me some of the games I lost.

**In the 2nd game of the Grand Finals, I decided to use Snake(who I'm terrible with) for the hell of it. You can watch it for lulz.

Thanks

from what ive seen you did a pretty good job despite the lack of experience against good marths
One main thing i noticed was that you seemed to be eating a fair few hits that could have been avoided.
I dont know about anyone else, but for me the best way around marth is to bait hits with meta's SHAD.
As for your spacing, its come along nicely but it still needs a bit of work.

Aside from that, you play a great MK.

Nice, an MK that knows what he's doing. I like it.

I think you could use more fair and empty short hops though. Those are great for spacing, but you seem to have your own effective spacing methods. I noticed you rolled backwards a lot, which is intresting. short hoping backwards will give you better options IMO.

Well, the marth wasn't really great to begin with hahah but, something's you probably know already by know is hat you should try not to use shuttle loop at the ledge so much, if you noticed, you always got punished by it with an fair or fsmash etc

umm, try to let marth back on the stage because off-stage he's the most vulnerable , and maybe use your ftilt more too

great mk tho

Thanks for the critiques so far guys; I'll be sure to remember them next time I play.

Did you mean "try NOT to let Marth back on the stage?"

Nice solid MK bro.

We def have to get some dittos in sometime in the future.
Sadly, Gkon got cancelled...
Yeah, sadly. I'll keep my eye out for other Texas tournaments though.

We'll get some MK dittos in sometime for sure.

Things I immediately noticed.

Way too many grounded Upbs. You lost 2 stocks because of them. A simple fair to shield pressure dairs would have worked better. When your opponent shields, you should be abusing that. Shields are horrible against MK, abuse that.

You need many more dairs, and makes sure to stay away from the grab range.

Also, wait for Marth to approach, he is weak in the approach against MK. And don't try to approach him when he is recovering. You didn't kill him a single time in his recovery in the vids I watched. Just edge hog. If you run out of invincibility frames, just roll on, and knock him off again.

Oh yeah, to play On luigi's mansion just play normally, and when you hit with a tornado, count it as 2 more tornados to a FORWARD smash. The dsmash comes out to quickly.

Calm down on the rolls too.

EDIT3: Just watched the ending to Grand Finals 7. That was hot stuff! That was great. I need to remember that.

you got lucky in the winner finals 2. where you used your neutral b off-stage and he smashed you right after your neutral b finished. if he wouldn't have smashed you it would of been game for him. but hey you won. good metaknight.

haha, yeah I remember that. Pretty lucky considering that MT was accidental

EDIT: Thanks a lot Sinz, I'll remember all that next time I play as well.

I'm only 1:33 minutes into the video[Grand Finals 7] and your using way too many ground UpB's at this point. You had a good apporach with a small jump fair, but at 0:36 you can clearly see that alot of marths attacks will out prioritize you. Shield through the dolphin attacks. Dont spot dodge. Go for using Uair or Bair against marth. But be VERY VERY mindful of HIS Uair Bair. As they can and will hurt. When you do use MK's Uair Bair, make them unexpected. Dont get yourself into a predictable pattern, since that is when marth will probably start using his. 2:18 Go for a shield grab! Plus if you can get a chance to get a grab in while they're in animation delay, go for it!! 2:38 Good job with that UpB. 3:09 excellent! Thats how you should keep a marth off the platform.

Wonderful DI
Very nice grab mind game
Mastered Fair and dtilt

All of this stuff makes you one of the bests MK ! You know what are you doing ! You're really a amazing MK ! As criticize I only have to say about to use more Bair, Nair and Suthle Loop ... Another thing that i've seen is that you are recovery too much with MT !

In other words, your MK is terrifc !

Congrats !

Also, don't counter on Luigi's mansion unless you know how to play on it. Choose rainbow cruise, halberd, or Jungle japes(I really don't recommend this one, I got klaptrapped 3 times in tourney. It sucked I went for the edgehog and died.)

Wow...amazing spacing. I could learn a lot from your spacing =) (and patience x,x)

I did notice, however, that Clel started reading your MT's a lot. At 0:35-0:47 in Winner's Finals 3, he read your MT and punished it twice in a row. He also punished it a few other times in that same match. In my opinion, if you use MT too much, the opponent will start to read your player-unique MT patterns, so I would think that you shouldn't use it as much as you did...but then again, that's coming from Mr. 42ish posts over here =\

So, yeah...that's my two cents.

On a side note, I was wondering if you guys could help me out really quick. After you get hit off the stage, do you use just an aerial to "reset your DI," or do you air dodge and then use an aerial? I've been doing the latter, and I was just wondering if I was doing it correctly. Thanks for helping out the newbie over here =p

I don't think using Air Dodge will stop your momentum.

When MK's get knocked hard off the side, they should use U-airs to help them DI toward the closest corner to increase their chance of survival.

Nice stuff.

I'd warn against approaching with MT vs Marth. It's great when you use it for punishing, but Marth has too many moves that break it, including counter, to make it worth approaching with it.

Thanks for the info =)

EDIT: Forget the last edit...figured it out. I DI improperly...

I looked at a few more of your matches and noticed a few small things.

~In Grand Finals 3, I didn't see, really, any tilts from you when you were off the boat. Even though there are lots of small platforms that just scream of air-game, when you get to the top, and the screen starts scrolling right, don't forget that you have MK's wonderful ftilt and dtilt for pressuring.

~Also, in Grand Finals 3, at 1:00, I noticed that your Shuttle Loop ended up getting you KO'ed by Marth's fsmash. While Shuttle Loop is a great attack with a large hitbox and great knockback, if not "aimed" properly, you'll, obviously, end up in front of your opponent and vulnerable to punishment. Obviously, Marth's long blade does a fine job with safe punishment, so this especially applies to this situation. At 1:00 in that matchup, to me, the preferred approach to your Shuttle Loop would have been an aerial -- probably a uair.

~In Grand Finals 6, at 0:29, 1:45, especially 2:22-2:27, and other times, I see more of the excessive MT getting punished. I also saw you using MT to come back from the stage a bit too much. Don't forget that you have tons of other recovery options, such as gliding, regular jumping, Drill Rush, and even Dimensional Cape. While MT is a more superior recovery due to its priority, etc., we have the same issue from before: your MT is being read a bit, so I just suggest that you mix it up with a Drill Rush or two (like you did at 3:12) and other recovery options (especially gliding, since the gliding attack cancels nearly all of the landing lag). Just don't forget that there are other options out there.

So, there's a few more cents than two cents =p I hope that I helped.
