Now you can join the rest of society in frustration whenever Valve makes an announcement that's not about episode 3.

We had a PR basically sketched out before the UNM tournament but anyone who saw those results knows that it changed a lot.

If Steven and Neil plan on continuing entering Brawl tournaments then it makes sense to consider them in the rankings. If Casey is still alive and hasn't drowned in a sea of facial hair from his neckbearding, and he ever plans on playing Smash again, then we should probably consider him too.

Basically, we need to know who considers themselves active enough for PR consideration. Thoughts?

Niall, I don't mean to crush hopes and dreams, but our smash scene is unfit for power rankings. Your thread for Las Cruces is sinking to the bottom of this forum because none of the active competitors have smashboards accounts. Our thread for the Melee power rankings aren't even on the forum anymore (they're archived; google them) because it's outdated, the game has serious tournaments very rarely, and we're not interested in sustaining it.

Power rankings exist for two reasons:

1. Motivate the players.
2. Attract OOS.

Half of our players already don't care for any of the smash games. Not to mention we hosted ONLY ONE smash event big enough for OOS incentive this year (Erich's tournament in July 2011). Ergo, power rankings won't do much here. Of course, don't take this as discouragement. I'll support you if you build enough interest in it (you can consider me active in that case). If it really takes off, then perhaps I could be a panelist.

tl;dr we're a circle of friends. no need to try and be socal let's just have fun :awesome:

Tekkie, if you want a PR, we need to run a tournament circuit for it, because single tournies usually have varied results (see Steven beating Nolan when Nolan beat him at the last RR at Casey's)

I'm up for it though

Who cares about any of that? If we want a PR then let's get one. We all know who the people are that are serious about this. Tekkie, Walker, Nolan. That's enough for me. This is New Mexico, let's do it our way. **** the system. Let's all agree on a day a month, that we all meet. Brawl it up. This is smashboards after all, so let's smash it up gentlemen. I drive my *** from Rio all the way to where these fests are. My heart is sincere.

Happy Thanksgiving all. Figured I'd lay out the details of my Saturday fest.

It's at my house on Saturday, starts at 3 and goes until whenever.

Featuring:
-KoFXIII
-Ping-Pong
-A large refrigerator
-A complete absence of wall-mounted deer heads.

Set-ups are appreciated. Call or text me at 301-2961 if you need directions or anything else.

-socorro, not fail-***-worthless LC. it's more of a directory for tournament results and the rankings is a legitimate incentive for a handful of the players at my school. we also have a FB group, which has worked well.

-melee is like legit D&D dead, where not only are you dead but you have negative enough HP to not be allowed to be resurrected and play the campaign anymore

-we're bad at hosting. we need to fix that. the next time we could host a significant tournament will probably be around May once school is out and as always i'd be happy to help with any planning.

-i'm really trying to find a reason to care about playing anymore, especially in the spiteful face of the people i play with telling me that it's a joke and i shouldn't try anymore. since i used to put in a lot of work to practice (drove up here and back in the same day for a six-person smashfest once lol) that won't be happening at all if it's turned away from something competitive that i can get better at to just hanging out and playing random vidja gamez. with dedication to something competitive comes dedication to playing it more, so i won't be around nearly as much if it comes to that conclusion.

-we have walker, nolan, myself, and victor, and arguably iria/a few other random people, not sure yet.

-idaho has a PR, for pete's sake

if it's really gotten to the point of TEKKIE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP CARING YOU'RE THE LAST ONE WHO DOES AND IT'S COMPLETELY USELESS then i'll back down and show myself out

but FIRST THINGS FIRST: i need a way to get to steven's :awesome:

MtG isn't dead here Ian.

Also, I oppose the idea of a PR that doesn't have Casey as 1st, even if he's super inactive, he should still be #1 for at least the 1st 6 months of it, since he basically made us look like less of a joke

And I'm pretty sure we have 2 people that try to keep brawl going at least

if i take the bus to steven's it's a 16 mile trip and by the time the bus stops i'd have to leave at like 6pm anyways, so that's not happening

I'm in the mood for serious discussion. Here's a not-too-difficult question that I hope will provoke thoughtful responses.

A common argument for atheism is as follows: there's no empirical evidence for the existence of God. So why bother, right? No need for faith.

Now, can similar reasoning apply to nihilism? Can I analogously say "there's no empirical evidence for the meaning of life?"

I've struggled with this for the last few days. Really, any input would be helpful. Thanks.

I've always thought that the most frustrating part about talking to a nihilist is that their points are all valid. I would also say, though, that Aristotle (and other philosophers) have pretty good arguments about what life is about, without making reference to an unknown deity.
Also, a counter-argument to any atheist with your proposed argument would be to say there is no empirical evidence that there isn't a god.

Of course not. It's all subjective. It is what we make it.

Ian said what I was gonna say.

Besides, the need for fixed meanings of life is awful anyways. If you need to search for the meaning of life, god, ect, you should do some self analysis first. They are all self created (meaning made by humans) concepts designed to comfort ourselves. We don't need them, they just make us feel better.

a philosophical debate is always nice (beyond "those real corn chips?") cause i still need a subject to write on for my philosophy final. i used to call myself an atheist but now i don't sign myself off of to any religion. the main reasoning is that for as many arguments there are against god (or equivalent), there is just as many arguments for god existing. same thing could be said for nihilism. as many arguments there are for life having no meaning, you could have as many arguments against that. like ian said, it's subjective, without anything concrete to build on we are just arguing over subjects that might never have a true answer. but i guess that's the appeal of philosophy.

A "creator" is a bit more difficult to argue against than say, the Abrahamic god. But as far as I'm concerned, a debate on why religions need to be abolished is far more important than a philosophical discussion on agnosticism.

On nihilism: There is no real, true, meaning to life. Dedicate yourself to what makes you happy. If you want to leave your mark long after you've passed on, then make it a goal. If you just want to live day to day and enjoy the simple things, go for it. Don't get wrapped up in deities and **** unless they bring you joy or something.

edit: and zack, you can be an agnostic atheist.

Honestly, abolishing religion is poorer than just abolishing organized religion. Religion has plenty of problems sure, but they almost universally have a good message underneath all that dogma. It's when you let individuals lead people, under the guise of "the greater good/higher power", you get far more problems that a bunch of people believing that the will be smote and suffer eternally for not being a good person

1) I would be interested in a PR. Although I will need some time to get better with alternate characters (since MK is being banned soon).

2) Potato

Reposting for a new page.

Also Walker, I disagree that religion ultimately has a good message. Or if it does, it's part and parcel with lots of pointless awfulness (the Abrahamic religions, anyway). A "good" Christian/Muslim/Jew and a "bad" Christian/Muslim/Jew can both be equally adherent to different parts of their source texts .

On the topic of religion, it is the greatest thing I have ever found on Reddit:

As for my original question, I didn't properly state it :glare: I wanted your help in evaluating the strength of my former argument. Analogical reasoning is always potentially dangerous, but it appears valid to me.

There's many distinct, unexplored possible consequences. Here's one. Why is it that, in academia, people are so respectful of another's response to the meaning of life? Nihilists, absurdists, and existentialists (as Ian and Walker somewhat implied) seem to be treated fairly. Oh, you're willing to reduce life, a phenomenon which many scientists consider an astronomical rarity (and many others consider an aesthetic masterpiece), to pointlessness and nothingness? Okay, that's cool, I'll just let you along on your merry way. But atheists never get this kind of respect in various scholarly communities. Oh, you're going to deny the existence of a divine, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, infinitely benevolent Being? You think it might even be a laughable idea, just a human construct intended for comfort? Well, **** you too.

Why does this happen? Why are there so many polemical fundamentalists and evangelists, but so few adamant defenders of Aristotelian potentiality (a traditional, fixed meaning of life that preaches a sort of human perfection)? Aren't all four possible answers to the two inquiries here equally privileged? Is every response equally dependent on empirical evidence? Why can't one's faith (or lack thereof) in God be equally subjective as one's evaluation of life?

Or am I making a mistake somewhere? Is there a logical contradiction in my characterization of events? Help me out.

Many apologies if I confused the initial question even more. That happens in philosophy =D
