I meant moves that you had to charge by holding down the B button...

Because as a quote from Sakurai... "try holding the button down longer to charge up attacks." And I was wondering if that was a new feature or not. Sorry for the confusion.

EDIT: Right, I forgot about Pichu, Pikachu, and Luigi! Shows how much I play with those guys. lol.

That is so awesome how they used Metaknight to demonstrate the moves. I feel so lucky right now, not having to go to school yet. Yay, more updates to be seen.

Meta Knight's gonna kick donkey butt. Nuff said.

But it's a shame Sakurai's hiding him from us... I mean, he's given us SO much info on him... but no character profile. Wassupwitthat?!

I don't know maybe he's unlockable, honestly though he might as well reveal the Metaknight profile.

I couldn't imagine him being unlockable... we know so much about him already. But, hey, I'm not making the game...

But, onto the special moves... the Dimensional Cape... is that move made up?

Haha. Thanks. It felt odd only seeing one direction.

Which brings up something... why don't they add opposite direction specials? For example, when you're looking to the left, a quick right special would do an attack that mostly knocks back but has minimal strength.

Well, in the Kirby games that Metaknight appeared in; once you defeated him his mask would come off and then he would cover himself with his cape and disappear.

Right behind you with a knife.
The Mach Tornado was shown in Super Star, along with the Tripple Dash. The Up B could just be a regular rising slash, or could be the gliding move we saw earlier. The Down B has never been an attack, but more of an effect. You can see in too, in Super Star, right before Metaknight attacks Kirby. It's assumed, but not confirmed, that this is a reflector.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the Tripple Slash also showed up in Magic Mirror, and when you used Metaknight's sword, you could preform it in mid air.

This update is so awesome. It turned what would have been an average update (assist trophy) into a how to play ( I like those) and THEN got us Meta Knight's Moves!

Sakurai = God

And now we know why Meta Knight has those crazy random Combos in the trailers lol

I'm guessing he does a rise, then loops around and starts gliding with his wings. Or it could be like peach's float.

Anyway, I think Sakurai will do another double post for meta's profile. More Subspace Emmissary plot/Metaknight profile double update. And we'll finally see how he plays in to the story.

To enjoy more of the depth of special moves, try holding the button down longer to charge up attacks, rapidly pressing the button repeatedly, or tilting the Control Stick while doing the moves. You might also want to try them in midair.

How come nobody else has said anything about this? I'm pretty sure that there weren't any characters that you had to repeatedly press the button.

Mario's, Doctor Mario's and Luigi's tornado beat your last statement. I do wonder if every character in Brawl is going to be able to charge up all of their special attacks.

I know that Sakurai has no logic whatsoever in his update patterns, but this is by far the most humorous. It was so obvious that no one was going to take that update for a How To Play, because it is, in reality, a "MK special moves" update. And this thread has proven it.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with it, it's good for us and whatever, but if Sakurai wanted to get the point across of the How To Play, he shouldn't of used a character whose moves we've never seen before. lol

Mach Tornado and Dimensional Cape look very very cool. I'm a little worried the Shuttle Loop is going to be a little basic in concept, and end up boring. Oh well, the tornado has enough awesomeness to make up for it! O.o

For the actual How To Play update, I'm glad we'll be getting more Samus/Marth Side-B's. As in, more b moves that have different ways of pressing them besides just direction+B once. I figured that was clearly the next step in special moves, not directional B-moves like I've seen suggested.

Well, for sure, we're gonna be disappointed in one update... even though we've seen his moves already, he's gonna put them again once he puts Meta's char... unless no everyone's gonna have chars, moves, and final smash updates.

wow, meta knight is going to be amazing :D

Maybe he will, maybe he won't.

Perhaps they're gonna be upping the anti by making all the characters extremely powerful as compared to the melee characters, but this will ultimately balance out.

Or maybe we're just reading too much into the info we have, and meta-knight is gonna have significant weaknesses to balance him out.

Also, why isn't this in the DOJO Updates Forum? o.O

GOOD QUESTION!

anyway, I'm hoping that EVERY special has the tild/smash/hold/tap pattern. Especially if the moves change, like Samus's Super Missile on Melee. It was the ONLY special that did different when smashed.

Everyone needs to stop complaining, this is a great update!
Meta's Side B looks decent, maybe a combo finisher, his neutral B looks like it could be a finisher or a starter, his recovery is like Dolphin slash, and his cape looks like the reflector.

What if the cape only stays up for a moment but stops melee attacks as well? That's dolphin slash, counter, mario's tornado, and a better illusion right there.

I can't wait to beat Meta's with my Pit =P

Rofl, I totally missed this update until 11am this morning.

Metaknight is one of the characters I want to main. Him and Pit, so seeing him in an update is always a good update.

Also, I would've said this update is equal to "You must recover!" if it didn't have pictures or a characters special moves.

Still, the only valid part of the update that does NOT involve metaknight, is the fact that we're going to get more Samus/Marth Side-B's. I always hoped, because it's like adding more moves w/o actually adding more button moves. I think it was a great idea for samus and marth and will be a great idea for everyone who has them.

You seem to be forgetting Peach's 'Peach Bomber' and to some extent, Zelda's 'Farore's Wind'

For the benefit of people asking if the ability to charge/aim special moves is new, I compiled all of the special moves from Melee that I can think of that can be charged, aimed, or that give some effect from tapping B:

Charge-B moves:
Neutral-B: Marth, Roy, DK, Sheik, Samus, Mewtwo, Ness, Link, Young Link, Jigglypuff
Side-B: Luigi, Pikachu, Pichu

Aim-able B moves:
Side-B: Zelda, Sheik (sort of), Link, Young Link
Up-B: Pikachu, Pichu, Fox, Falco, Ness, Sheik
Neutral-B: Ness (sort of)

Tappable B Moves:
Down-B: Mario, Dr Mario, Luigi
Side-B: Marth, Roy, Fox, Falco (short illusion)

Miscellaneous: Samus' missiles

So yeah, there are a TON. This is nothing new.

You can aim Mario's, Doctor Mario, and Luigi's Up-B more on a horizontal path if you press to the side. Just wanted to add that.

Huh... why am I just now finding that out? That move always frustrated me so much during BtT because it was so unwieldy.

Also, I generally didn't list any traditional up-b moves since they can all be DI'ed to an extent. If I'm understanding you correctly though, these moves would be a bit different.

To the previous reponses, listing all of the chargeable special moves, I wasn't talking about those... :urg:
I assumed it was obvious that people knew you could charge those? I was refering more to the down B, and up B.

I'm so hoping that Kirby's dumb Hammer can be charged up. Wouldn't it be a surprise if you could actually KO someone with it ^_^

Meta is now the newest God tier.

Glide.
5 Jumps.
Reflect.
2 recover specials.
A single spot crowd-breaker.

All he needs is a sword lazar and he'd be pwn.
Gah, with current information there are plenty of ways he could be medium powered compared to the melee characters, or even be bottom tier.

And that's assuming they keep melee power as the base, they could even out the balance at say, around Fox's current power (American version anyway, Sheik for PAL), in which case metaknight wouldn't be out of place.

Reserve judgment till the game come out, there's far from enough information about him to declare him God tier on his own, and since it's comparative, without knowing how the rest of the characters function, there simply is no grounds for comparison.

All you can do is compare him against Link since they have the same level of info available (who is also "God tier" according to the boards), and still, they have so little info of substance on their moves that it's a shot in the dark.

Though, maybe he is the newest God tier, with only him and Link with any real info, it takes very little to be a God tier. Of course, don't expect a very long reign. They'll probably be several more "God tiers" revealed, and when the game is released, none of them will be God tiers, and somebody that is unexpected will be the best competitively (probably by a small margin) due to so unexpected combination of programming. Would be ironic if it's Jeigen, if he's included.

among the figments of your imagination
I've taken a good long and many looks at MetaKnight's Dimensional cape move in the E3 trailer. It does not reflect Pit's attack. Rather, it flashes a little and disappears. However, there does seem to be another affect; upon being struck, Metaknight releases a spray of red particles in a 90 degree arc. I cannot say for certain which direction the particles travel, but it seems they travel either upward or slightly forward, or it just may be flashing lights for the sake of flashing lights. What Metaknight has isn't a reflector, its a defense ability that seems to absorb projectile attacks and release a spray of particles using the energy of the absorbed attack.

your thoughts?

He looks like he'll be a bit like Kirby, multiple jumps to cover horizontal distance, and a very vertical recovery... that is, if his side B can't be used for (feasible) recovery.

EDIT: I bet that Metaknight not getting a profile is a recurring joke amongst those close to the development team...

You're forgetting Snake. He hasn't even been in a screenshot since the initial trailers.
