The quotation marks weren't used to quote what you said, it was used to denote a title; similar in a sense to a nickname. Ex. Miles "Tails" Prower. I can't speak for the others that voted for her, but I do know people that voted for Lyn solely for potential (myself being one of those people).

I thought you were implying that Pichu was more deserving than Lyn when you retracted your vote so I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Hopefully all the Clone Engine characters could bring their own unique style to the current cast because, like you, I rather not have a literal clone of a character in essence and playstyle.
Lawdy no. No offense taken or meant, friend.

Has anybody seen the 4.0 "leak"? I have been told their was a 4.0 "leak" with knuckles and waluigi, But I never saw it.
It's an overtly fake roster featuring the characters from the /v/ leak, +Waluigi.

Considering that it has six new characters rather than five, it's obviously fake (alongside the general shoddiness of the picture), but we still don't know if the /v/ leak is fake or not. We can only hope. I can't have two ridiculously disappointing Smash rosters back to back. );

Anybody see the Bowser moveset in Sm4sh from the VGBootCamp? Bowser must've dropped 10(thousand) pounds, he moves like a lightweight now.

You probably should have mentioned that off the bat, then.
Pretty sure he was just saving face, lol.

SO, IT'S TIME WE HAD A SERIOUS TALK ABOUT RIDLEY.

-waits for Saito to leave the room-

The more I play P:M Charizard, the more confident I am that Ridley could be a "clone" of him and still be acceptably Ridley...ey. Although Ridley would need many very different animations, the primary idea behind many of Charizard's attacks and style would fit Ridley very well. Of course, Ridley's not just going to be a bigger, slower Charizard or anything. No, no, no. I'ma see if I can put a little something together here.

Ridley, Scourge of the Galaxy and Commander of the Space Pirates
Size: Very Large (Overall, slightly larger than Bowser)
Weight: Dedede/Charizard/Samus Tier
Walking Speed: Extremely Slow
Running Speed: Slowish, around Ganon's Speed
Jump Height: High, a little greater than Charizard's
Number of Jumps: 3
Air Speed/Maneuverability: Slightly Less than Jigglypuff's
Falling Speed: Medium Slow (to Very Slow)
Fast Fall Speed: Moderate
Bonus: Cannot Crawl, Can Wall Cling, Can Wall Jump
As one would expect of a dragon from space, Ridley is all about staying the hell off the ground. Ridley rears up on his hind legs while standing still, keeping much of his body curled together to reduce his battlefield presence and avoid danger. However, being a quadrupedal creature, Ridley must walk and run on all fours, making him a long, snake-like target. This, coupled with his slow ground speed and relatively low weight (for his size), make him a big, juicy punching back for characters that perform well on the ground.

Of course, the Cunning God of Death isn't just going to be a pushover. With quick, weak ground attacks that are primarily used for popping his opponents into the air, Ridley is all about controlling where his opponents are (which means putting them into the air), putting himself where they are (in the air), then murdering them there (again, in the air). When Ridley jumps into the air, he stretches his lanky, skeletal body out and spreads his wings back behind him. With his sleek form, the deadly Space Pirate can glide through the air and strike his opponents with his frighteningly long tail and razor-sharp claws, talons, and teeth.

Once Ridley is in the air, though, he'll be reluctant to come down. With a Down Special inspired by Charizard's, Ridley can hastily leap into the air, then stay there by spreading his wings wide. When using his Down Special in the air, the space dragon can drastically lower his fall speed, allowing him to hang in the air and claim the space above the battlefield as his own. With deadly aerials, Ridley can control the sky and keep his opponents grounded, or in the air with him.

As one would expect, many of Ridley's attacks involve his pointy tail, which has a sweetspot on the end, and a sourspot everywhere else. Think of his tail as a spear when using it.

Space Pirate Specials
Standard Special - Dragonfire

Ridley hocks up a fireball, which flies in an arc and hits the ground, causing a small fire on the ground. The arc and trajectory can be controlled similarly to Yoshi's Eggs or Snake's Grenades. Holding the button for a second will charge the fireball, turning it into white-hot plasma and causing it to explode on impact, popping foes upward. Ridley can spit two normal fireballs in a row, or a normal then a charged one.

Using this move in the air will cause the fire/plasmaball to arc much more heavily and makes it hard to aim. Ridley will hang in the air slightly while charging the attack.

Side Special - Pirate's Grasp
Ridley leaps foward, wings and claws outstretched, and makes a grab for his opponent. Upon grabbing a grounded opponent, Ridley can either grind them into the ground (as he's done to Samus on multiple occasions) or toss them up into the air. Upon grabbing an aerial opponent, Ridley can throw his opponent forward or backward, or do a dive ala Ganon's Aerial Flame Choke, which results in the dragon grinding his opponents into the ground anyway.

Down Special - Wicked Wings
Ridley launches himself from the ground and high into the air. Upon pressing this special again midair, Ridley opens his wings and greatly decreases his fall speed. In this mode, he can use aerials repeatedly, but his aerial maneuverability is decreased, making this perfect for antagonizing foes that try to reach you or lining up a perfect KO. Fast falling in this mode causes Ridley to close his wings and descend normally. Ridley can also drop Dragonfires straight down or slightly to each side in this state, but they cannot be charged or shot rapidly.

Up Special - Space Jump
Ridley flaps his wings powerfully, creating downward gusts of air and propelling him up. He flaps his wings twice (the second triggered by a second push of :GCB:, but you can't delay for too long), and can use this "attack" during Wicked Wings to increase his height a bit. He can only do so once, though. His wings also get a small hitbox during this attack.

Deadly Aerials
NAir - Razor Twirl
Ridley briefly curls his wings in, then twirls vertically with his tail curling around him. Think Sonic's vBrawl FAir, but vertical. Hits multiple times. It's much quicker than most other attacks of this nature, meaning it does a bit less damage. Ridley's tail spear is around waist-level during this attack, meaning foes near the center of Ridley will take more damage.

FAir - Spear Tail
Ridley flicks his tail foward quickly, similar to Mewtwo's FTilt. The end of the tail (the alienesque spear) holds a sweetspot that can throw foes forward, while the rest of the tail is a sourspot that doesn't do much knockback at all. Gotta have that spacing! Although, you could use that lack of knockback to build up some %...

DAir - Pogo Tail
One of Ridley's famous moves from the majority of his 2D incarnations, Ridley points his tail straight down and quickly drops altitude for just a moment. If the opponent can be sweetspotted with the tip, they will be spiked, and Ridley will bounce back up a short ways. Ridley can also hit the ground with his tail, allowing him to "pogo" back into the air with it.

UAir - Claw Swipe
Ridley simply swings his claws haphazardly above him, being unfamiliar with fighting foes who actually manage to get higher than he is. This attack brings foes toward Ridley, but will not spike them. If Ridley happens to nick them with his claws, they'll be popped up a bit.

Smashes
FSmash - Meson Bomb
Ridley charges up his plasma breath, then exhales a short-ranged Meson Bomb directly in front him. Similar to Snake's vBrawl FSmash, but with a wider radius and slower wind-up. Throws foes forward at an upward angle.

DSmash - Dual Swipe
Ridley swings his claws out in front of him and drags his tail out behind him, along the ground. This attack as greater range behind Ridley, as well as a rear sweetspot that pops foes up (this is the only case in which the entire tail is a sweetspot). Hitting with the dragon's claws will throw a foe backward toward Ridley's tail, but not in time to hit the other hitbox.

USmash - Skewer
The purple Space Pirate faces the screen and spreads his wings, popping foes very briefly up, then jabs his tail straight into the air. Foes hit with the sweetspot will soar into the air, foes hit anywhere else will probably punish you. Excellent for juggling.

Tilts
FTilt - Delicious Flesh

Ridley sticks his crooked neck out, chomping at foes with his razor teeth. Similar to Charizard's FTilt, but with slightly greater range and much less knockback. Can be followed up with a claw swipe by pressing the button again, to throw your foe away from you and give yourself a little more room.

UTilt - Tail Flick
Ridley swings his tail up and in front of him, skewering foes who try to get in close. Throws foes up.

DTilt - Scorpion
Ridley jabs the ground in front of him like a scorpion would. Hitbox extends over his entire body as his tail lashes forward. Foes hit by the spear end at the point of impact fly straight up, all other KB is forward.

Jab - Ridley swings his jagged claws twice, then swings his tail forward. Three hit combo, low %, last hit has moderate forward knockback and ending lag. Emergency situations only.

[Most Wanted]
  • Waluigi (Mario Bros / Wario?)
WAAAHHH!! When will he appear in anything OTHER than a party game!?
  • Ridley (Metroid)
    But he's too big!
  • Ray MK III (Custom Robo)
From that overlooked series a lot of people know about, but most people never played.

  • Saki Amamiya (Sin and Punishment)
The guy who I always thought was a girl

  • Black Shadow (F-Zero) and Ganondorf(Legend of Zelda)
A two-in-one package where the current Falcon-clone Ganondorf will be reskinned to his arch nemesis Black Shadow, and the clone slot will be used to recreate Ganondorf using available models
[1/2 Point Votes]

  • Paper Mario (Paper Mario)Like Game & Watch, but color
  • Bowser Jr. (Super Mario)Bowser's kid who's been trying to make it big in the Mario games
  • Pichu (Pokémon)Because he's a veteran
  • Pokémon Trainer / Red (Pokémon)If he could fight on his own...
  • King K. Rool (Donkey Kong)The main villain of Donkey Kong
  • Skull Kid (Legend of Zelda)Recurring character and villain of Majora's Mask
  • Samurai Goroh (F-Zero)The second most popular F-Zero character.
  • Dark Samus (Metroid)The other big Metroid villain
  • Lyn (Fire Emblem)A popular female FE lord
  • Isaac (Golden Sun)"..."
[Anti-Votes]
The entirety of the Sonic-related cast (Tails, Knuckles, & Shadow)
Whether they'd be clones or not, I'm strongly against 3rd-party franchises being over-represented. They should stick to the one Assist Trophy and one Character Slot. I feel anything more is just too much. If we want to add 3rd-Party characters, then we choose a different franchise at the least, and a different 3rd-Party company at the most.
UP VOTE
  • Bowser Jr.: Bowser is a polarizing character as is, so it would be very interesting to see a bit of that raw strength be balanced out for something brutish, but still quick. Plus, it's Bowser Jr.
  • Ridley: Needs more bad *** monsters.
  • K. Rool: DK characters really need more love, and K. Rool really deserves a shot.
  • Ninten: The 3rd EB kid of choice, and to round off the Mother series.
  • Samurai Goroh: Mostly voted because it's NOT Black Shadow.
DOWN VOTE
  • Dark Samus: Too much clone. This could seriously just be an alternative costume for Samus. Daisy warrants more of a slot.
  • Black Shadow+Ganon: Minus the whole sword thing, Ganon feels really Ganon-y with how his move hit hard and such cruelty. Black Shadow is similarly in the same boat as Dark Samus where there are far more worthy characters of the series to look at.
I'd downvote Shadow the hedgehog for the same reason as the above two, but he's already at the bottom of the barrel.
Well organized vote lists like these make me feel happy deep inside.

I'm gonna go make my list prettier now.

The rules discouraged me from leaving anyone out because the only people I don't want to have my half-vote are the people I'm voting against. I'm not indifferent to them; I'd like them in after all. Either I want the character in or I don't, and there wasn't anyone I was like, "I could care less either way." So it seems everyone listed people they don't know/don't care makes it in, but I know almost every character on the list and do have an opinion either way. There's no "neutrals" to me, so I find it difficult to come to the same conclusion. Force me to lower it to 5 and I could do it, of course... But with no cap, why would I not vote for any character I'd want in, you know?

I could break it down into five tiers TBH:

Top 5 list (1.0)
Almost made the cut (0.75)
Pretty nice (0.5)
Would be nice, but not a big deal (0.25)
No. (-1.0)

This moveset. It... this....

Such a brilliant idea. I want it. Nay, need it.

Although, can you give me a more clear difference between the function of the Down Special and the Up Special? I like the sound of both of them, they just seem too similar from my late-night groggy read-through. Please understand.

FAir - Spear Tail
Ridley flicks his tail foward quickly, similar to Mewtwo's FTilt. The end of the tail (the alienesque spear) holds a sweetspot that can throw foes foward, while the rest of the tail is a sourspot that doesn't do much at all. Gotta have that spacing!

DAir - Pogo Tail
One of Ridley's famous moves from the majority of his 2D incarnation, Ridley points his tail straight down and quickly drops altitude for just a moment. If the opponent can be sweetspotted with the tip, they will be spiked, and Ridley will bounce back up a short ways. Ridley can also hit the ground with his tail, allowing him to "pogo" back into the air with it.

UAir - Claw Swipe
Ridley simply swings his claws haphazardly above him, being unfamiliar with fighting foes above him.

This attack as greater range behind Ridley, as well as an elusive sweetspot that pops foes up. Hitting with the dragon's claws will throw a foe backward toward Ridley's tail, but not in time to hit the other hitbox.

USmash - Skewer
The purple Space Pirate spreads his wings, popping foes very briefly up, then jabs his tail straight into the air. Foes hit with the sweetspot will soar into the air, foes hit anywhere else will probably punish you. Excellent for juggling.

I'll continue this if anyone is interested. :U
I was indeed saving face, thanks for recognizing. :p
I was thinking Ridley's NSpecial shouldn't be just a conga line of fireballs. that'd be too easy to get past and, from what I can tell, most characters have something that makes them really effective in different circumstances.
For Ridley's B, I'd rather see him spew out a cone of fireballs. One going straight ahead, another at an upward angle. Charging it should produce three, or two and do more damage on the ground. with the third going at a downward angle, so it can be useful in the air.
There was a Ridley moveset either here or in the Sm4sh Character prediction thread that I really liked. It went into neck deep details, just the way I like it. I can't remember who posted it though :/ sorry.

I bet Lyn wouldn't even have half of the votes she has now if she wasn't a girl.

It's too bad Isaac and Ridley aren't girls, or they'd probably have votes into the tens of thousands.
Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I wouldn't be surprised if other people had the same mindset as me when I was voting. I support Lyn but I don't really care about the fact that she's a girl.

Now, I read a lot of posts before I voted, and I thoroughly read the OP to make sure I had all the rules right. But having been lurking in this thread for a long time now, I'm a lot more knowledgeable about how all this works. When I was making my initial vote, for some reason I had a few ideas in my head: first, that characters who already acted in the game in some fashion (such as assist trophies) had an advantage, because the PM team would be able to use their models/moves as something of a base or inspiration. Second, that such characters stuck out the most in my mind, and I didn't want to take the time to scan a list of trophies and stickers to see if anyone was in there I'd want to vote for.

In short, I feel that voting for well-known assist trophy characters is a bit of an easy (or lazy) decision. Players are exposed to them on a constant basis while fighting (as opposed to stickers and trophies). On top of that, I think for some people (myself included) there is a certain appeal for characters with a more realistic look than a cartoony one (which may explain why they stuck with the Twilight Princess style in Smash 4). Fire Emblem meets that criteria, as does Golden Sun to some extent, which likely explains why he has so many votes when there are so many people who haven't played his games.

So, gender aside, Lyn has the advantages of being a character seen by all players on a regular basis, an appealing design, and being from a decently well-known series. People who aren't really Fire Emblem fans can vote for her inclusion, and they don't really have any reason to go digging through the stickers to see what other FE characters are eligible.

I hope this rambling made some sense.

- Tom Nook

After playing New Leaf and checking out the moveset ideas for Tom Nook and it's a must. I understand why Hanebow and Pictochat don'thave representing characters but Smashville, being such a reliable and good stage pick just has to have one. And who better to represent than Tom Nook. Who else can? Villager is already in Smash 4 so... Crazy Redd? I don't think so. Neutral Special could be a smack with different types of furniture. It would be a good killing move or spacing move. Up Special would be a tether fishing rod

Although, can you give me a more clear difference between the function of the Down Special and the Up Special? I like the sound of both of them, they just seem too similar from my late-night groggy read-through. Please understand.
Please, take a look. -screen fades to white-

Ridley would duck low to the ground during his DSmash, clawing out in front of him and swinging his tail around in the back. Essentially, this would be a "reverse" Smash, because it has a much greater range behind him than in front. The front hitbox is really only there because having an attack that does jack-**** in front of you is weird and I don't like the sound of it.

Ridley's USmash is exclusively for juggling or striking an opponent that's literally inside your body. Ridley faces the screen, spreads his wings (the knockback would emulate Wario's DSmash, albeit a little farther off the ground), then shoots his tail straight up from behind him. The vertical range would be Uncharged Mortar-tier, but is very risky to use unless your opponent is directly above you.

Hope that clears things up. I wanted to give Ridley some difficult-to-use, unwieldy moves on the ground, encouraging use of his aerial prowess. If the attacks seem awkward, that's the way I intended it. :p

I was thinking Ridley's NSpecial shouldn't be just a conga line of fireballs. that'd be too easy to get past and, from what I can tell, most characters have something that makes them really effective in different circumstances.

I designed the Dragonfire to make people approaching Ridley weary. Because the uncharged fireballs cause fires on the ground, people will generally try to jump over them to get at you, which opens up a few options for Ridley.

A.) You can hock another, charged fireball at them, which will explode on impact and throw them into the air.

B.) Hit them with an uncharged fireball as they jump at you, causing them to fall into the fire you previously planted and rack up some %.

C.) Jump toward them, and intercept with Ridley's powerful aerials.

The fires caused by the fireballs were built with the idea that they forced approaching opponents to jump over them, tricking your foe into putting themselves in the last position they want to be in with Ridley -- in the air, next to him.

Your idea is interesting, though. Would the fireballs fly straight, or arc?

Not really sure which stars you're looking at, but you shouldn't let a character's chances for Smash 4 affect your vote.

Finished the Ridley post if anyone cares about his tilts.

I updated my votes back on Page 369.

Removed Shadow from +1 votes
Added Ridley to +1 votes and removed him from +1/2 votes
Added Masked Man/Claus to +1/2 votes.

I also made the entire post look nice, so that's a plus too.

MUST HAVES (+1)
Dark Samus - Metroid needs more reps for sure. Dark Samus has an entire moveset that could be ripped straight from the Metroid Prime games. Also dark blue / black particles effects are super sexy.

Black Shadow / Real Ganondorf moveset - Ganon as a Falcon clone is sort of lame. An actual LoZ themed moveset for Ganon would just make more sense, but it could potentially anger people if we removed the Falcon-clone moveset, so Black Shadow would be a cool replacement.

Ray MK III - Why doesn't Custom Robo have any reps? There's so many weapons for the Custom Robo series to draw moves from, also it was an insanely popular Nintendo game. Also Custom Robo for Wiiu pls?

Ridley - I've been swayed. Ridley has the potential to be pretty freakin' sweet. I'm all for Metroid reps, and a heavy floaters are extremely fun.

Isaac - I don't know much about him, but from what he did in his assist trophy, he'd be sick in PM. Swords + Psyenergy stuff is really cool. Also he already has a model so yeah.

Cool Additions (+1/2)
Waluigi - We have A LOT of Mario reps. Waluigi is basically the only plumber left to be added, so why not? Despite only being in the spin-off games, Waluigi is the Luigi to Wario, if that makes sense.

King K. Rool - Pretty iconic villain from the DK games. He's been around long enough to have a vast majority of moves to use. I'm sure he has been requested a lot for many Smash Bros. games. Also, I've been dying to say, "That was pretty K. Rool of me to beat you like that" forever.

Skull Kid - I don't know much about Skull Kid, but I feel like he has a decent amount of moves to choose from. Also, he's pretty iconic.

Masked Man/Claus - As long as he isn't actually called Claus, you circumvent the walking spoiler issue. The Sword/Cannon/Psyenergy combination would be so godly. Also, a Lucas clone in itself with be godly. He's only a 1/2 vote because I ran out +1 votes.

Bowser Jr. - Bowser Jr. has the potential to be an incredibly unique character. I don't see him being much like Bowser, and the Shadow Mario stuff could be incredible if it were worked in somehow.

Please Stop (-1) read like coneyzz and tkbreezy during the pacman reveal "pleez stahp"
Sukapon - What even is a Sukapon. Sukapon isn't really that well known. I honestly had to search up Sukapon. The only acknowledgement of this game is a sticker in Brawl, and no one even looked at those. You would make very few people happy with it's addition, and everyone else would just be confused.

Tom Nook - What even. Tom Nook would take gimmicky characters to the next level. What is he gonna do, make you pay bells mid game? Anything you could use as attacks would be way too far of a stretch. He kind of just doesn't make sense for Smash Bros.

Krystal - Is anyone else tired of the Spacies? I guess you could argue that she would be different, with her staff and stuff. She would require too much work, and isn't really worth it in my opinion.

Toad - Please no. Not only is he annoying, but what will he do, scream annoying facts that you already knew at you? He doesn't really have any place in a fighting game, because all he does is screech and generally be annoying. He's only a B move for a reason.

Pichu - No one actually likes Pichu. Pichu is just a trolly, generally worse version of Pikachu. Pichu is literally a direct clone of Pikachu, with the only difference being weight and the ability to hurt yourself, which is equally as stupid. The only real counter-argument to anything I've said is that Pichu is a veteran, which is stupid in itself.

Basically we need Dark Samus.

Guys, hate to break it to you, but you can't just change your up-votes on a whim. Unless you have a damn good reason, up-votes are set in stone. These are meant to be characters you feel very strongly about. leekslap, If Ridley is, indeed, in Smash 4 then you can take back your upvote for him, but until he's confirmed, we're not changing your vote. DatDolphin, I'll still add your Masked Man half vote since you can add as many of those as you want.

Fantastic Moveset. Only thing i would add (because i love giving characters gimmicks, jank and such) is a double hover. Allow ridley to hover into another hover. So he could recover like so: hover>hover>jump>Up special or >hover>jump>hover>Up special. Also if there are any button combinations that haven't been used a glide would fit him swimmingly.

Well, if you are accepting more votes, then here I go:

+1: Basiclally, the forbidden 7.
Dixie Kong (A must! Good combo value/effort A/A, by the way).
Pichu (Maybe controlled by Pokémon Trainer? Best gimmick ever!).
Plusle & Minum (A la Ice Climbers, but with electric moveset... emm... Can I vote for characters that is not in the first post list? If not, please ignore it, I guess)
Tetra & Toon Zelda (If out of list votes are admissible. The same way Zelda & Sheik works. I thinks this count as two votes).

+1/2:
Paper Mario (Good concept)
Dark Samus (I am divided in this because I think she fits better for Alt Costume Engine, but I love the idea anyways).
Black Shadow & Ganondorf (Much better representation of both franchises).
Isaac (Unfair lack of representation of Golden Sun)

-1: I am not friend of transform the game so drastically, that is the why of my votes.
Pokémon Trainer fighting by his own (WHAT is the **** point of to put a TRAINER in the roster that TRAINS nothing?)
Characters represented in the game in other ways (almost all candidates), some of them: Toad (How Pech will counter then?), Ridley (Boss... and yes, too big), Saki Amamiya (Assistant).

I'm not entirely sure "Too big" is a valid down-vote for Ridley. It's almost a sub-culture, but I don't think it's a valid reason for exclusion. I also don't think the boss fight is going to change, so I wouldn't worry about that.

As for Pokemon Trainer, have you considered that the moveset could easily revolve around other Pokemon? It's not going to just be punches and kicks...

Seriously people, we already had a discussion about what is and is not a valid down-vote. If these things would literally RUIN the game for you, that's fine, but consider what you do before you vote since alot of these characters (especially a purple space dragon) are people's favorites they're dying to see in the game.

So I had a random thought come to mind a bit earlier today. Is it just me or does anyone else believe that if a character that isn't formally in the main Smash 4 roster gets picked for the Project M clone character positions, said character might get a massive chance at joining in Smash 5? The visibility boost could be pretty dramatic.

And why I have to vote for "other people's favorites" they want to be in the game? That is just my opinion. If you like Ridley, just vote for it. If some discussion about valid down-votes concludes that people cannot down-vote because other people's favorites, then I am just not agree.

It is just my humble opinion.

See, that's great and all, but I'm not actually sure what you mean by that, and how it relates to those particular characters, and their reasonings. I don't even support a Pokemon Trainer, and yet I find the reasoning not sufficiently connected to your stated clause of "this will change the game drastically".

I seriously propose a separate "Earthbound Characters Discussion" thread.

I'd rather talk about Knuckles or something at this point.
I don't think they warrant it. No one is going to stop you from discussing who you want to. If you don't want to talk about a certain character, simply don't respond to the people who are talking about them. Eventually, whatever they're talking about will die down when there's nothing around to fuel it. And if the conversation does have plenty of fuel - well, that means it's a conversation worth having.

While we are forcefully shoved into the all-too-familiar position of having to talk about Ninten, let's talk about Porkey.

I seem to be in a very small minority that prefers Porkey/Pokey to either Ninten or Masked Man.

From my perspective, Porkey is a much better representative than Ninten for the Mother series. Although Ninten is technically the first protagonist of the series, the comparison to Marth seems a bit streched to me. Yes, Marth and Ninten both started their series and yes, they were both originally Japan-exclusives, the difference is that by the time Smash came out, Mother had begun to be localized and Fire Emblem had not. In this regard, Ness still has the privilege of being the Mother series star while Lyn (having debuted AFTER Smash had started to represent Fire Emblem) is less important than Marth.

Additionally, Porkey provides Smash with an uncommon archetype: the villain. While people around here might have played the Mother series, let's not kid ourselves. They are far less played than most other series Smah represents. Porkey is a great way to prove that Mother has more depth that simply including another speechless, chibi protagonist.

I'll get this out of the way, I LOVE Ninten. I think he's awesome. I also am realistic in how much he looks like Ness. Every picture, sprite, or model I've seen of Ninten looks like Ness with a pallet-swapped shirt and a differently-turned hat. That's just a color-change! In the heat of a battle, would Ninten look different enough from Ness? Remember, Smash is turning into more and more of a spectator sport and including a look-a-like of Ness as a fully fledged other character might be difficult for certain people to entertain/keep up with.

I don't have as much against The Masked Man as I do against Ninten, but I still think Porkey is a better choice than him. The Masked Man is simply less important and is just more of the same.

The Masked Man is the main villain of Mother 3, but that's it. Pokey/Porkey is in Earthbound AND Mother 3. He is the only MAIN character (yes, I know there are cameos of other less important people) to be in more than one Mother game except for Giygas. MM simply isn't the most representative choice. As a consolation to MM fanatics, however, I think Lucas with red hair or Lucas' alt. costume work quite nicely.

I've heard arguments for both characters that say Ninten and MM can support radically different movesets than Ness and Lucas respectively making them interesting choices and not boring clones. Newsflash, folks: everyone can have a radically different moveset. My argument is that Porkey can have an even MORE radical moveset because he isn't taking from the same bank of moves that the four PSI kids are. In my mind, he is a Wario clone who has had certain moves replaced with mechanical gadgets.

As for a proper moveset for Porkey, I wish I could provide one. That simply isn't my cup of tea.

As awesome as Porky would be, he's extremely unfeasible to realize within the clone engine we've been given. A lot of us, if we got Porky at all, would prefer that he piloted a spider mech like in EarthBound or Mother 3. Now, do you see any character as of right now that can provide a good starting point for that kind of body?

Hence why he isn't supported even amongst Mother fans such as myself here.

Edit: especially since the idea of him fighting outside of his mech like you describe, a Wario clone, is kind of lame.

I see his spider mech as more of a final smash type thing, but to each their own.
