But maybe he was just saying something like "Since you brought Ness back in SSB and now Pit in Brawl etc."

But it does indeed, and in fact. Sound like Ness is returning since Miyamoto didn't deny Ness coming back.. But he didn't say he is in, it just sounds like he is in.

Could go either way.. I never used Ness, but wouldn't mind seeing the classic coming back for more.

He was in the last two, it wouldn't be fair to cut him out now.

It was never confirmed that all of the original twelve characters are returning.

That interview in no way confirms anything. As OnyxVulpine said, it could interprited that the interviewer meant that the SSB series is a means of giving life to old school franchises IE it helped gradually bring Ness back into the spotlight. Mr. Miyamoto answered the question that was asked but didn't acknowledge if Ness was in or jump on them to correct them if he wasn't...which isn't a confirmation either way.

Also, Mr. Sakurai (ya know, the guy directing SSBB) is supposed to have said they were using MOTHER 3 music in SSBB in his Famitsu column but there isn't a link to it seeing as how its from a Japanese print magazine.

I don't know, I was working on both sides of it though. I have doubts about everything, nothing is every 100% for me until it is confirmed.

And besides I like to look at things from a different perspective.
Sometimes people won't listen to you because you completely one sided. But if you talk about what they believe in, then theres a chance they will read your opinion too.

Then again... Its not like some people will change their mind just from reading something like that..

Worth a try ^^

Nah, the article isn't specific enough and Miyamoto easily just laugh knowingly at whatever question and give whatever answer he wants without really meaning anything. The reason Ness might not come back is because he can be replaced by newer Mother characters... so I think many would say it's fair enough.

Many people have said that Sakurai said the originals will return, but I can't remember seeing the actual article, and he might have been referring to the originals as in those who didn't need to be unlocked.

Ya...I mean, I love Ness and I love Earthbound but until a higher up from Nintendo specifically says Ness is in the game, he pops up in a trailer, or he gets profiled on the SSBB site we shouldn't believe he's confirmed. I mean, Mr. Miyamoto has stated in another E3 interview that he doesn't know a whole lot about SSBB and everyone else interviewed says they can't say and point people to the Dojo. This is could just be a case of poor wording lost in the translation process. I'm not leaning either on if he is or isn't (I think there are good arguements for both) I'm just saying that the question was worded weird and the lack of acknowledgement might not mean anything due to translation and misunderstanding and what not.

Actually it doesnt seem like Miyamoto himself mentions Ness in Brawl specifically anywhere; the interviewer makes that assumption.

Its obvious that Ness is in it because he has been in the 2 other games and the 12 of the 7 characters from the first Smash Bros have been confirmed so he will be in it!

By that logic, if I flipped a coin 7 times, and it always came up heads, I'd never lose another coin flip.

Right now, I'm more interested in finding a link (if it exists) to any statement saying that all ssb characters are returning, because it's true that the article is too flimsy to prove anything by itself.

Anyone know where that statement is?

There never was any such statement.

There was "Not all characters will be returning" and "Returning characters will, on a significant scale, be remade"

I knew he'd appear anyway, but i'm not too fussed.
He wasn't a favourite character, I never used him unless I had to, it'd be a shame to see him off though.

The statement that all characters from Smash 64 would be returning came from the Nintendrone interview, which, as far as I know, has neither been proven nor disproven (If either is the case, I would be greatly interested in knowing).

this doesn't confirm anything
but what u can say is that ness has a bigger chance of returning than for example dr. mario.

yoshi is not confirmed yet either
but... he has a stage and music confirmed already.
it would also be a waste of such an awesome moveset to make him not re-appear again... but u never know.

Confirmed means, that if a direct source tells you who is in or not and not just some interviewer making a speculation and not getting an yes or no answer.

among the figments of your imagination
The interviewer didn't ask specifically about Ness in SSBB :

"GI: You’re doing a good job with Smash Bros.—you’re bringing back Ness and you’ve got Pit now—but the hardcore fans, the old school are looking for more than just beating the crap out of each other with those characters, so are those franchises something we may see in the future?"

The interviewer did a clever thing, he apparently made an 'assumption' that Ness was in, It may have been said to get Miyamoto to spill the beans should he correct or confirm Ness's returning. Rather than correct or confirm what the interviewer says, Miyamoto just skips over and answers the question asked. it means nothing, and that puts us (if we are thinking at all) back to square one.

Man Ness is awesome, I see no reason to take him out (Unless Mother 3 is taking over forgetting about Mother 2..)

Expected answers from "Smash n00b"s.. jking..

I never... Well I think I did use Ness, he didn't feel right to me.. His attacks were a bit hard to pull off for me since I'd rather learn the projectiles properties and just shoot it instead of controlling them and the like.

I never knew who he was until recently and I think he should stay in the game since he is such a classic character.

Hate to sound like a n00b here, but was Earthbound/Mother/Whatever Ness is from released in the USA? It wasn't released in the EU as FAIK.

Earthbound was released in the US. It's a really weird game as well.

Anyways, Ness should be in, along with other originals, as long as they make him better. He sucked in SSBM, an if he's like that again in Brawl, you might as well not even put him in.

Ness sucks? Elaborate.

If your going by Tier list, Ness is one of the best in the original.

This has probably been said, but I wonder if HAL are replacing Ness with Lucas from Mother 3 like they originally intended to do in Melee before M3 was delayed. He would probably have the same moves. It would just be a different person.

Ness should be in Brawl and I don't think he'll be removed...What they do need to do is balance out the Tier list. Then he'll be more popular and a better character to play as.

Funny how he was top tier in first game and wasn't in the second game.

I hate Ness, no one I play with even uses the character. Takes too long to figure him out and get good with him but if you could get him working he could likely be a worthy opponent.

all rpg fighting systems get annoying after a while, except for chrono trigger because that one was so involved and fast paced
