Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea fired artillery toward its tense western sea border with South Korea on Tuesday, injuring at least 14 South Korean military personnel and two civilians, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Four of the military personnel were seriously injured, Yonhap said.

At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time, Yonhap said.

South Korea's military responded with 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire, the report said.

The South Korean army also raised its alert condition, the report said.

Images of plumes of smoke were quickly broadcast on Yonhap television from the island of Yeonpyeong, but it was not immediately clear what the artillery had hit.

The island has a total of about 1,300 residents, a fisherman who lives on the island told Yonhap.

Some residents started fleeing for the South Korean mainland, which is about 145 kilometers (90 miles) away. Other residents were seeking shelter at schools.

The South Korean government immediately called an emergency meeting of its security ministers.

The North Korean fire came as the South's military conducted routine drills in waters off the island, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the North.
So random. Seriously, what the heck is wrong with N.Koreans. If they try to start anything, it's pretty much going to be them against the world. =.=

Kim-Jon Ill is ill-minded.

Or whatever that guy's name is. What a stupid *** move on N.Korea's part.

It's always pretty much been N.Korea vs the world, and they've done odd things but this is just so pointless.
Let's hope this was Kim-Jon Ill his idea and not his son's.

I don't think South Korea could make up **** worse than the reality of North Korea's conditions and existence if they tried.

Also, the title of this thread on the main index said only "N. Korea fires on S. Korea". I did a literal spittake and almost had a heart attack.

I'm not too sure but I don't think N. Korea has any oil, so the US isn't going to bother joining a war if it happens.

I think that the 2nd Korean War will be coming within our life time, or even this decade, unfortunately.

China is allied with North Korea, which causes a political issue for most nations. If the US rallies to S. Korea's side, China will almost surely back up N. Korea [as it's practically a dependency due to it's state].

Technically, the first Korean War is still in effect, but it was on a cease-fire. With this happening, I don't know, mayne.

It's also a rumor that China is starting to distance itself from North Korea, but don't quote me on that.

China vs USA cold war 2 anyone? In a head to head war NK would surely lose to US backed SK, but China could cause problems with tensions and it's currently giant economy.

As someone else already pointed out, incidents like this one have occurred sporadically for a number of years. If anything, N. Korean military is acting out of habit, and S. Korea is responding in kind.

China is N. Korea's ally on paper, just as the U.S. is S. Korea's ally on paper. But neither of those two countries is interested in a military conflict in that region. So I don't think this situation is going to escalate into a full scale war. It isn't in anyone's interest, least of all N. Korea's. The problem is, the N. Korean leader can't be reliably called "in the right state of mind." He is still running this operatiion as if this were 1950, and the rest of the world has moved on. Communism is the last generation's war.

What I really don't want to see is China cutting N. Korea off completely. I feel that China is the last voice of reason in their ear. If anyone can get them to transition out of their current policy and join the rest of the global community, I get the impression that it has to be China. The people in N. Korea stand to lose the most if the situation escalates.

Yeah I don't see China willing to funnel support in to N. Korea when it knows that would just cause America to support S. Korea and would just lead to a much larger conflict. Honestly I figure North Korea will probably collapse before any sort of war happens.

China and America are far too interdependent economically and financially, with respect to manufacturing and sales and exports and imports, to ever engage in a conflict.

Sure, we have issues with some of their human rights practices and politics, but mark my words:

The US and China will never go to war, hot or cold, with one another.

Haven't had any media for the past couple days, was pretty surprised at hearing this.

Just insane, what's the point of firing off artillery on an island anyway...

If this gets out of hand
(it may very well have been out of hand for ages)
, we may see a possible World War III in our lifetime, should worse come to worst. :O

Victra would post this.

That aside, the U.S. started joint military operations / training exercises with South Korea earlier today if I recall the news correctly, whereas North Korea responded with "unpredictable" shenanigans. They just need to shut the hell up and give up.

Edit - And then China and Japan are like "We should work together to stop things from escalating."

I highly doubt this will create WW3. China doesn't look like it wants to fight for N. Korea and the only people looking for a fight seem to be N. Korea.
