Mystery Dungeon Series (Explorers of Sky Updates / Discussion)

For those who aren't familiar with the Mystery Dungeon series, here's a short paragraph I wrote when I started this thread. I cut out most of the opinions I put in at first.

So if you haven't played this games before, heres the plot. You are actually a human transformed into a Pokemon, and throughout the game your main goal is to discover why this has happened through different quests. You start off as a Rescue Team with a partner, who you can choose, and the basic point of the game is to do rescue missions, complete dungeons, and fit together the pieces of the storyline.

You yourself can be a number of Pokemon depending on how you answer to the personality tests at the beginning of the game.

In this one it didn't completely drop the "Catch 'Em All" logo like it did in Colleseum (Shadow team) or Stadium games. You could still catch almost all of the Pokemon (up to the 3rd generation) at that time (excluding the version exclusives), except you didn't really get much of a reward for doing so, or it wasn't really enforced enough. In the original, you would have to have the pokemons who you wanted to join your teams certain base. Like "Rub-a-Dub River" for Poliwag, "Legendary Mountain (or something like that)" for Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Pretty much that.
Although realize that the recruiting system was completely changed in the Explorers series. Now you can recruit members and have them come with you to a dungeon via a Chimecho Assembly method. And instead of a rescuer, you are an explorer.

So with that said, discuss the Explorers of Sky game, that just recently had a Japanese release. Discuss your thoughts on the game as a third installment to the Explorers series.

Below is some information I've gathered from Serebii and other sources about the game so far. Spoilers below, be warned. (I blacked out any chapter spoilers though, so you must highlight those)

http://www.serebii.net/dungeonsky/

There are going to be 5 new starters, Phanpy, Vulpix, Riolu, Shinx, and Eevee (Who is returning from the 1st game)

  • The storyline follows the same as the previous Explorers release, with some new content and new chapters.
  • Has 5 new starters -
-Phanphy, Vulpix, Riolu, Shinx, and Eevee
  • You can now choose the gender of your partner. Maybe there will be new dialogue based on gender?
  • Giritani's Origin Forme is in
  • Shaymin Sky Form in.
  • Two new shops in Treasure Town part of "Spinda's Cafe". One shop, Spinda's Drink Stand can turn your berries or seeds into drinks that can be used in dungeons (for what is unkown). The other shop, Explore Recycle and Big Treasure which will be run by Wynaut and Wobuffet. Wynaut will exchange excess items you have for other items, and Wobuffet will run a lottery.
  • Secret Bazaars found in certain levels on dungeons. They are run by Kirilia (YES!) and have 4 sections run by one Pokemon.
    - Mime Jr. will restore your health and belly for 100 Poke.
    - Shedinja will let you escape (like an escape orb) for 100 Poke.
    - Lickilicky will clean jammed or unusable items for a fee.
    - Swalot will give you "Luck Pockets" for a fee. These pockets contain random items, so just hope that your lucky to get something like a reviver seed.

Okay, so some of the story summaries have already appeared on Serebii. If you wish to stay spoiler free, do not highlight the below.

1. Genius Igglybuff

This episode has you play as the leader of the Wigglytuff Guild back when he was an Igglybuff. Teamed with his friends Smoochum, Wooper & Budew, we see and play through to find the reason Igglybuff becomes an explorer
2. In the Dark Future
This episode features the aftermath of the storyline. As Grovyle and Dusknoir both vanished into the future, they soon encounter Dialga's army. They have been sent out to eliminate Dusknoir for his apparent failure. Grovyle & Dusknoir team up as you go through Dungeons looking for the explanation

I would've liked to have the base close to where you go to the dungeons like in the first one.

And then the bell for Chimecho would be there too.

Saves a lot of time....

Walking to the shops and getting missions...

I never found that problem as long as the B button was there :D

Really, the main thing I want to see is online battles, since this game requires more strategy than others.

Like maybe 4 on 4 with your friends or something. Turn the game into something competitive.
They've already introduced online through the rescue scene, but other than that it seems like online just lacks.. when they could do so much with it..

I love the Mystery Dungeon series.

I gave away my PMD:Red as part of a promise for a friend; I got Blue, he got Red. I really enjoyed Blue. It offered something different from the normal Pokemon. I found the storyline to be good, and to this day it makes me tear up if I get to the end. The music was fantastic for a DS game of its time, too! (HINTHINT: Sky Pillar)

PMD:T&D are complete upgrades, and more. The storyline will make you GASP, if not physically, then mentally, at many times, and cry at others. The music is the best I've heard on the DS.

I've actually never really found the gameplay to be boring, unless it's in a dungeon with lame music and a lot of floors (**** you, The Nightmare.). The series is also pretty tough. Or at least, I found Darkness to be hard.

I'm looking forward to Sky with expectations I know won't be let down.

That's one thing that's wierd about this game, for me and for you too maybe..

Unless I'm leveling, I never found the dungeon crawling part boring.
Just leveling. That was pretty much the only thing that made me want to stop playing. But other than that even if it is repetitive it really never left me disinterested often. Especially in Time and Darkness where I mentioned you really never have to go on a long leveling grind in that game..

The one thing that stands out to me the most about these games is the stories. I mean, I just love how they are written, it literally doesn't feel like another crapy attempt at a spin-off.
The only thing about these games that I get annoyed with, is when your at the 99th floor and then you get killed and you have to start from the horrible beginning:(

Stamping your library books.
I actually enjoyed PMD2, to my great surprise. Dusknoir may be the biggest pimp the Pokemon world has ever seen.

I even cried at the end. So touching.

PMD is what got me to love Gardevoir, if you've noticed, she has a pretty big roll in the PMD games, and in fact, many spin-off games (Each Pokemon Ranger has a mission dedicated to Gardevoir XD)

Wounder what Gardevoir will do in the next one?

That's why I pretty much wait until I'm at full health before going to lets say level 11. Pretty much every 10 floors I stay safe. Or something like that. But yah that was pretty annoying. ><

What was her role in Time and Darkness (if she had one).

I beat the first game, and half way through the second game before I started over for some odd reason, so I never got to see Gardevoir. (I just saved Scizor if I remember right..)

In T&D, Gardevoir doesn't have much of a roll. She's a member of another Exploration Team, but past that, not much.

____

It would've been neat if there was a connection drawn between Blue and Red, and Time and Darkness. :/ I wonder if the new "Explorers of Sky" game will do something like that...

Shes part of Team Charm, the highest ranking team besides Team Raiders, and the team Wiggytuff used to belong to before she started the Wigglytuff Guild, You have to save Team Raiders from Mewtwo, but Team Charm helps you beat the regis.

The ending was great.

IMO, Vulpix and Eevee will be great starters. Riolu is okay, so is Shinx, but happiny? Who the **** came up with that? I do NOT want to evolve into the fat ***** known as blissey. Evolving into Ninetales, however...

I'd like to start as a Ralts, that would be nice! (You all know why...) That said, it looks like recruiting any member of the Gardevoir line is very difficult or late in most games >.<

I'd like to correct myself on this btw. Some of the information might have been wrong, but I've updated the OP with correct info according to Bulbapedia/Serebii

Happiny isn't in the game (I don't think), sorry for any confusion. I'll keep it updated as Bulbapedia keeps it updated, though.

I think there is enough information since the game has been released in Japan, now.
I did a overnight edit on the OP so things might be a little messy. I just wanted to see what people think about the game up to this point with all the information given.

I know this game won't get as much hype as something like Platinum, but it's something to discuss.

I'm kind of even more hyped about it with all the information given by Serebii. It'll probably be even better than Platinum.. just to me at least. It sounds a LOT better than EOT&D.

So yah, discuss or ignore. Hope this warrants a bump either way though.. I didn't think people would have remembered this by now. =/

I enjoyed PMD 1. Though I haven't done all the missions.

I've done the kyogre mission 3 times and have yet to recruit him D: (he supposedly has a 50% catch rate).

I've tried catching Groudon like 6 times and failed each time.

Three of the starters: Riolu, Shinx, and Phanphy are only for males

Three of the starters: Eevee, Skitty, and Vulpix are only for females

Interesting.
