MONSTER HUNTER 3

Developer: Capcom Production Studio 1
Publisher: Capcom
Release Date: TBA
Console: Wii
Cost: No official word. Monster Hunter for the PS2 was free to play.

What It Is: From IGN's Mark Bozon - "Monster Hunter is basically a loot-based adventure dungeon crawler. Set in one main town with a group of hunters, you set out to kick the crap out of dinosaurs and other behemoths, kicking their collective ***** with melee or distance attacks (depending on if you’re a gunner or rush-based physical attacker), and then skin and collect objects off the monster you defeated. The more you kill, and the more you “farm” larger animals, the better equipment you can make from their skin, bones, and teeth. It’s a pretty sweet system, and it all revolves around making your specific character – that is 100% customized to your liking – the top hunter in the world. "

Why You Might Care: A console MMO in the vein of Phantasy Star Online, Monster Hunter 3 is the next true sequel in the series, and it would bring a true online experience to the Wii, likely putting to use the capacity to use USB keyboards and potentially the WiiSpeak system. The recent PSP title, Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd G, featured over 250 quests, 70+ monsters, more than 700 weapons, and 1,400 armor types in a game that would all but certainly be smaller than the next official installment.

There's precious little information about this game out there, but hopes are certainly high for its potential.

The screen you posted looks pretty good. It's great by Wii standards, anyway.

I've never played any Monster Hunter games, but this seems pretty cool. An MMO for my Wii might be good, but I'm still not sure about how well the online will work. Brawl kinda shook my trust in that.

This game will likely be pay-to-play, so it would up the online credibility significantly. They would be able to provide more bandwidth, more content, and a generally better experience because the subscription fees would cover the overhead.

Hope it burns in hell. Paying to play a game you've already bought is possibly the stupidest thing in human existence.

Yet, again, a Nintendo innovation that's done too little to late.

Pay-To-Play is on it's way out in favor of advertised sponsored games. World of Warcraft has often been the center of it, but it never crossed over to the game. Shadowbane became the first game to actually run off this concept.

Still, it's definitely a good start from the company that said online gaming is a fad.

Ad-supported would also be another option, a very viable one. You'd get paid space during loading and splash screens. I don't know how likely it would be, but seeing as it's not a Nintendo-made game it's just as likely as anything.

Besides all that, if you're willing to do the private-server thing, you'd likely be able to play for free pretty much no matter what. I have to admit though, I wasn't expecting the level of outrage at a pay-to-play service. Personally, I'd be willing to shell out 10 or 15 dollars per month for a better online experience. With free ones, you generally get what you pay for--not a whole lot. :ohwell:

::EDIT::

It seems as though the Monster Hunter game for the PS2 was free to play online. I can't say how that will affect the Wii's online system, but it does set a precedent.

Problem is - PS2 has older hardware than the Wii. That is pretty much why World of Warcraft costs $15 a month and Everquest and Ultima Online cost $10 a month. They cause much more stress to the servers than older games.

Also, reading that at one time this was developed for PS3, I can pretty much see this game coming back to the PS3 within a few years. Capcom HATES exclusive games as seen again and again and again. With Monster Hunter doing so well for the PSP in Japan and basically leading it to outsell the Wii and DS for the past few months, it's pretty obvious they understand how lucrative this game can be. However, I don't know the sales for it out of Japan, but regardless, it won't take them long to realize it'll be in their best interest to release the game on the Wii, the PS3, and the 360. Still pretty odd that the Wii gets the first MMO of this generation. Not too bad for them at all.

This will probably abuse the Wiimote just like many other games, on previous Monster Hunter games every weapon had a different set of controls.

Oh and we might not see a western release since the main fanbase is on Japan and Capcom apparently has no server infrastructure to keep up an MMORPG on the west.

That just adds further depth IMO, just so long as they're doing it right (i.e., So it's not a wagglefest). And, I don't see why Capcom wouldn't release it here, they did a US release of the PS2 version and the servers for that game were outsourced to a different company so Capcom didn't need to mess with them.

I really hope this is released in the U.S. the only Monster Hunter game I own is the first on PS2 but I can't go online with it so I can't really enjoy the game that much. If I get this installment I could actually play Wi-Fi so I could give this series a fair review.

I'm wondering about that screen Shot. Is that Wii or Ps3? If thats Wii then I can't wait to see the end result
There's never been a specific origin of the screenshot, but it only showed up after Capcom began touting that the game would be Wii-exclusive, so I can only imagine that it would be from that version.

It would blow to no end if Capcom pulled a "This game is coming to Wii now, but here's a screenshot of what you guys could've had if it hadn't. Too bad, so sad."

If it's not a grindfest or a wagglefest I'll give it a try.

I'm not too keen about the possibility of pay to play. It's ok as long as the service covers a lot of games and is good [like with XBL] but when it's only for one game I just avoid it.

AH SHOOT YES! I was getting tired of waiting, so got a PSP solely for MHF2. I was so happy when I heard it was cancelled for the PS3 and moved to Wii... it almost brought a tear to my eye.

P2P is not something I'm looking forward to. If we are required to pay for this online, the connection had better be better than the PS2 version. It was lousy to the point headlocking Wyverns were easy, and if you weren't first in the zone, suffer teleporting dragons. And after playing MoH: Heroes 2 and Brawl, I doubt the online is going to be anything worth paying for. For Wii, atleast.

It's funny how this game looks gorgeous while the Dead Rising port is anything but.

Agreed, the graphics are better than the rest of the series. I didn't expect that, hah. Since the graphics have improved, I'm hoping for an actual character-shaped shadowing effect instead of 2 dark dots under the character's feet.

Online play confirmed. *Points to chatbox* Also, swimming underwater looks like it could be interesting. I'm hoping for new weapon classes... I always thought that a "Gauntlet" class would be cool. [/imagination]

Akso, the new movement controlls: SWEET! Looks like it's actually going to be easy to run and move the camera at the same time! =D

I saw a TGS video on youtube of the Water Dragon. EPIC! I really hope to see this game in the U.S., and this is coming from a guy who doesn't like the first MH that much.

Any word on the controls? All I know is that classic controller is supported, but I don't see how that will work when it doesn't have L3 and R3. Wiimote wouldn't seem much better, there just isn't enough buttons (and yes I'm taking into account motion sensing.

Looks like it'll be easy to run AND move the camera at the same time for once.

Well that was a pleasent surprise. Thought I'm not particularly fond of the "twist the remote and press A", becuase I usually find it more comfortable to hold it tilted a little to begin with, so it's gonna be annoting having to be counciouslly wondering if I'm "neutral" enough for a non-twist attack. Looks like it's classic controls for me!

I felt the same way with Splinter Cell on the Wii. You moved the camera by pointing your Wiimote, so you pretty much never got to relax your wrist..... But still, this doesn't sound as bad. Though it'll be upsetting if your Wiimote doesn't pick up an angle correctly, a mistake costing you 1/3rd of your reward.
