Guys, how often are you going to be playing the With Anyone matches anyways? Half of the fun is playing with your friends, you might as well just fight 3 CPUs if you're going to play With Anyone :p
I'm not expecting to play a ton of matches With Anyone, but for people who really end up liking the moveset of one of the Miis, it seems like they'd be disappointed to try to go online and suddenly see their favorite character not available. Unless the concern was them not having a true "standard" moveset, banning them instead of just having a default male and female costume seems a bit silly.

>Implying Nintendo doesn't know that local multiplayer is the most important.
Come on.
But it isn't, at least for most people over their 20s who don't have the time to play local multiplayer anymore.

Online gameplay should be the priority if Nintendo wants this game to succeed and people to play the game for a long time.

If you have the time for online, you have the time for local. Online is a lengthier experience, I don't see what time has to do with it.

Plus it only restricts usage of Miis against anyone. You can use them online with friends.

It takes me far less time to sit down, boot up the game, and navigate the menu to 'Online Play' than it does getting all my friends into the same room, sitting on the couch and/or chairs, and in the same mood to play Smash all at the same time. None of my friends love Smash the way I do. Most of them play Smash for a month and then don't want to play again ever.

So, I have to disagree with you. For a lot of people, they want online for lots of valid reasons. They want to play Smash, but have no friends. They want to play Smash, but their friends don't want to. They want to play Smash, but they live in the sticks and their closest neighbor is miles away, is older than dirt and doesn't know what a Nintendo is. They want to play Smash to pass the time, because their friends won't be over for a while. They want to play Smash with their friends online.

So on and so forth. Online is rarely the lengthier experience, unless by that you mean time flies when you start really getting into it.

Ah, I suppose I'm blessed to have Smash crazed friends then, I figured Smashboards members would have those kind of friends as well. What it seemed like he was saying was that work prevents him from playing local multiplayer but not online. I suppose I misunderstood. Nevertheless, the problem of no Miis online can be solved by making online friends to play with.

I'm a staunch advocate of local multiplayer (games that have online but no local option piss me off) and my original comment was a stab at Assassin's Creed, Dead Island and various other Xbox/Playstation games that feel local multiplayer has no place in this day and age. Nintendo knows otherwise and that's one reason I love Nintendo.

Hmm thats a first no comment from sakurai on the potd.

But juding by this we found the mii swordsman side special(s)

And as for takamaru its worse now, not only greninja now one of the mii specials for the swords man.
There was a comment:

"Pic of the day. Here are some weapons the Mii Swordfighter can use: Shurikens of Light, Chakrams, and Gale Strikes. You can control the direction the Chakram is thrown, or even make it stall in midair. The Chakram is also the only one of these tied to the side special move, so you can use one of the other items consecutively with this one."

I patiently await the moment Sakurai announces Mr. Game & Watch (as a veteran character) and Dark Pit (as a Pit alt since I think he's not getting as a character at this point). Those teases got me anxious for the next pictures.

I would also really like to see if Ganondorf was revamped or not, but he might be a secret character (again) and will probably have to wait until September (when the roster leaks game releases in Japan). Same for Mewtwo's return.
With everyone getting new moves I'd be surprised if Ganondorf didn't get a couple new moves.

They're really not "new" moves so much as cloneish variants of the original. At least possibly outside of Mii. Also, this is probably why King Dedede only threw Gordos. He chooses two others for his Side B with customization. Just a theory.

No some people are actually getting new moves like ZSS, Sheik, Charizard, etc. Ganondorf should atleast get 1 new special.

So far, no clones have gotten any new specials in 4. We've only had one, mind you, but still. I'm not terribly confident on Ganondorf being that unique myself. I still think he'll have some of Falcon's moves regardless.

That's an interesting point. I just assumed they had dropped the other options since they were reducing random elements in general, probably to reduce processing strain on the 3DS. However, DeDeDe's Side B customization could be adding in the other elements. After all, they've all been seen in Smash Run, so they have models.

Pretty much.

I can't wait to find out. So, Waddle Dees, Gordos, and...? What could be a good last one? Waddle Doo aside, anyway.

I will laugh and laugh and laugh if one of his custom side-specials is throwing Bandana Dees.

The only clones we've seen so far are Toon Link and Luigi. Luigi is already pretty different from Mario, but he still got a new FS, and Toon Link is pretty much unchanged, although he has some unique normal attacks. Link also got some new normal attacks, which gives him a little more differentiation.

So
  1. That's not much of a pattern.
  2. Luigi and Toon Link are canonically "clones".
    • Luigi is identical to Mario in most of the old games (SMB1&3, SMW), and his moves are the same aside from jumping/traction in plenty of others (SMG, NSMB, SM3DW).

    • Toon Link doesn't use any equipment that he can't use in Wind Waker. He has the same name and general appearance (except as a cartoonish child, of course).

So there's very good reason to expect Ganondorf to be treated differently. If Pit can have 3/4 specials revamped, a new FS, and some new normal attacks too, it's not that crazy to think Ganondorf will get a couple new special moves and some changes to his standard attacks.

Luigi is no clone by the time of Melee, really. He's diverged enough. Brawl, not even halfway close. What you are in the original series doesn't have anything to do with what you are in Smash. Canon is ignored. It was easier to branch Luigi out due to many games giving him new things, even a personality. He still keeps the general idea of his old moveset, though. I'm pretty sure everybody has so far, where they never diverged way too much from the original.

As for Ganondorf, I just don't expect a severe moveset change. Some differences, maybe a new B move or two. But Brawl already did a pretty good of separating him(his actual issues were more speed, weight, and poor jumping skills. He could deal some heavy damage, but had no real mobility).

Ganondorf just needs his specials changed. The other moves are OK as they are.
And really, I don't think he needs to use a sword to be honest.
But if it was for me, he would be simply cut and replaced with Pig Ganon, so...

If canon is ignored the newer games would be irrelevant. Canon isn't strictly adhered to, but it does matter.

Pit got all updated moves because in the Kid Icarus games he got a bunch of new moves.

I don't think it's guaranteed that he'll get an overhaul, but given the changes that have gone to veterans that didn't need them as much, it's really not crazy to expect some significant changes. He needs changes both to improve his move set and to declone him and to make him fit his origins better. He has basically the best case for an overhaul of any veteran.

Like Sakurai would be full of fail if he couldn't recognize that.

That's not what I mean. It means he doesn't have to adhere to canon and can ignore it if he wants to. As you said a moment ago. It doesn't always matter.

Pit got all updated moves because in the Kid Icarus games he got a bunch of new moves.
I'm pretty sure it's Sakurai's extreme Kid Icarus bias more than just being "newer" alone. He designed that game, after all.

He just needs to be viable as a character. The rest is an idea that works. And Falco has a better case, as he should've gotten something newer than a slightly varied Reflector. Ganondorf at least still fits what he does. It's not about swords. He's a powerful fighter, and shows it off quite well. Every move he does is more than realistic enough to who he is. Flame Choke, Magical Kicks/Punches, electric palms. He's a wizard, after all. None of this is a stretch, despite the clone moveset. The only reason I think he may get changed is for the customization itself to give him more varied moves as is, than Falcon's near identical set(save obviously the Flame Choke at the moment, which could even have a Gerudo Dragon variant, and possibly something else).

Like Sakurai would be full of fail if he couldn't recognize that.
Or he doesn't care that much? I'm sure he's well aware. There's the idea that changing someone too much alienates previous players of the character. He might've said that, but I forget.

Either way, I'm still not really expecting it. I'd like a unique magical moveset, if anything, but a sword? Nah. It can be done better than that.

All of this talk of Ganon when he's not even in the picture ;-; it's beautiful. Speaking of Ganon, I expect him to be shown in a direct in August if there's any mention of Hyrule Warriors or the Zelda for Wii U, would be a nice tie in. Otherwise, when either Hyrule Warriors or Smash 3DS comes out. Unfortunately he won't be in tonight's picture, it'll probably be Palu-blehna or maybe Pac-Man.

It's close to midnight and something boring lurking in the web
Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream but boredom takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as boredom looks you right between the eyes
You're bored

'Cause this is filler, filler night
And no one's gonna save you from the POTD about bored
You know it's filler, filler night
You're fighting for something new inside a filler, filler tonight

[...]

And though you fight to stay awake
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The boredom of the filler

Just waiting for Sakurai to give us a new stage or something just to throw off all the people expecting a Pac or Palutena pic (me being included).

So I'm gonna go with either showing off a move of Pac-Man or Palutena, or G&W's true reveal tonight.

I doubt that we'll get a veteran reveal. They always happen on Fridays unless it's done to tie into some sort of event, like a Nintendo Direct or a game release.

We're up to 34 characters now, before release. So I'm guessing 35 or a whopping 40 character starter limit.

Then again, the third partys will most likely be unlockable. They were even shown on the back of the box and were still locked characters.
Oh yeah, totally, I expect the third parties to be unlockable, though I still think it's silly since they're the biggest news and there's nothing secret about them, but minus them we have 31 characters starting. Some people think Lucario, Marth, Luigi, Toon Link, and maybe others are unlockable but I'm not so sure about that.
So! Minus third parties we've got 31 starting characters. Brawl's full roster ended at 35 slots but 39 characters technically so I expect Wario, Meta Knight, and Ice Climbers to appear giving us our 34 character starting roster! Maybe Lucas might show up and take us to 35 too. Then with 3rd parties, characters like Falco and Ganondorf, Ness and Falcon, basically returning secret veterans, plus 4 announced secret newcomers! That should bring us to 48 or 50 full roster!
I was trying to keep my hopes low and think maybe 45, but the people at the treehouse event who played the full game in secret kept going on about how massive the roster is, that I really think we could get to half a hundred!

We should be close to seeing Palutena info in the PotD. I'm not a big fan of Palutena, but I wouldn't mind hearing about how exactly her movest works.

I'm still here for the potential disconfirmations.

Something interesting about Palutena would be my guess for tonight, though.

I'm hoping for a veteran. Expecting Palutena info.

Ya know, it's funny. Before E3, I kinda wanted and was ready for Palutena. I was not wanting Mii Fighters or Pac-Man. But after all the reveals, Palutena probably generated the least amount of hype for me, and Pac-Man and Mii Fighters turned out really good. Maybe it's just because I had lower expectations for them compared to Palutena.

I'm hoping Palu or Pac. If it's Palutena, hopefully we get a pic similar to last night, where multiple moves are confirmed rather than one.

Or Magnus, Pit, Palu and Phosssssss all together.
