Who cares if everyone expects it or not? I doubt Sakurai concerns himself overmuch (if at all) in constantly one-upping his "attempts" to outdo our expectations every subsequent weekday - certainly not the expectations of the Smashboards Daily Pic commentators (whose comments I'd be shocked to learn that he'd ever once read through).
Besides, many past Veterans have been confirmed in conjunction with some relevant release date or other (Zelda, DDD, Diddy, etc.). Today is not the only day with Yoshi relevancy, true, but if Sakurai does indeed not show Yoshi in today's update, I strongly doubt it would be because he fears that he would be viewed as "predictable".

Because pretty much every character reveal has been with the there respected game release. Plus Yoshi is the only original 8 that hasnt been revealed yet. And its Friday, better way to start the weekend with Chicken Wings and Yoshis confirmation

Hype train feeds on unpredictability. Not nearly as fun if you know what's coming. That's why Lucario/Marth/Little Mac/Rosalina made the forums blow up, because no one was expecting those characters to be revealed at that time. It's 1:35 AM, I'm sipping tea, doing my english journals, listening to music, and waiting for a picture I'm mentally capable of waiting.
I'm still not too sure we'll see something though. I am very skeptical, but I'll be thrilled to be wrong.

I'd be surprised if Sakurai knows - or ever will know - that he has such a reputation attributed to him.
His aim is to reveal information morsel by morsel. He's naturally going to want to surprise us, but I don't think he sits there at his office desk and goes "Hmmmm, how will I outdo myself this time?
"Point being that he isn't beholden to any of us (or our perceptions of him) when it comes to his daily pics. The only thing that he's beholden to is whatever aspect of the game he feels like showing off on a particular day. If he's perceived as a troll, it's only because one assumes he has some kind of pattern/timetable/plan to follow - that, and that most pics offer only small glimpses into the game to begin with.
tl;dr Yoshi has a strong, though evidently not guaranteed, chance at being confirmed within the next hour or two.

Just imagine the way he acts in the first Yoshi's Island (kicking items around, auto-jumping at a wall/edge, running over people, being controlled by who stands on top of him), and then put that into Smash Bros.

What time does Sakurai update on CST?
You know what really gets my hype going? The fact that we're getting a Smash 4.
Surprises are nice for us and beneficial for Sakurai, since it generates further interest in the game. But I find getting meaty chunks of information satisfying overall anyway, whether or not I had expected them.
I didn't expect Lucario to be shown when he was, but I did expect Dedede to be shown when he was - and I appreciated both updates in equal measure. As I most certainly would be should Yoshi be indeed shown in this week's closing update.
If you enjoy being consistently surprised, however, I bear you no ill will. I simply don't think that Sakurai is obligated to be unpredictable, is all.
Actually, thinking about it, I think it would be insensitive to ask a bird to carry fried bird carcass around.
Just drive up to Canada and drop them off by my place.

If Bowser Jr ever gets in Smash he's not going to rep Yoshi. He'll be Mario with his daddy.

Let's begin speculation on what shade of green Yoshi will have in the game? His hue seems to change between games from a pale jungle green to a pine or pea green. Though in Brawl it went more towards a pea green. Personally, I want something that'll pop like a vivid shade of pea green. Think lighter than Luigi.

Baby Bowser and Bowser Jr. get easily mixed up for some people.
Partners in Time only made it worse, with Baby Bowser having Bowser Jr.'s appearance and sound clips from Double Dash. (although you could say that it's natural, if you consider that Bowser Jr. resembles Bowser from his youth and that his scarf is a hand-me-down from Bowser.)
I tried doing that with Little Mac immediately after the direct. Took about 30 minutes to an hour if I recall for the website to actually update.
