During INNsomnia the Ship and COK brainstormed about have a tounry or gathering of all of the midwest like once a month or something. The reason being is that most of the East Coast play together often and have this unity that the other coasts don't have. Whereas here in the Midwest we all live a lot farther away but I do believe we love each other as much as EC does themselves.

Not only will a Midwest Monthly be about unity but it will also help increase the skill in all of us. Team Ben and H2YL play often, thats half the reason why they manage to stay on top of all the national tournaments. We need to find a way to play together and play often. What better way than to house a monthly tourny to play smash or just hang out. I know I would love to just hang out with all you MI, IL, and IN folks.

Lastly, we need input for whether anyone else thinks this is a good idea. Squared seemed cautious because maybe monthly is too often or we might not have a common ground. But COK thinks monthlies would be amazing. COK travels anywhere and everywhere for the MW. So if anyone thinks this would be a good idea or if you any ideas for housing or times or anything go ahead and post. The more input the better.

sounds like fun. the only thing I have to say is make it to where I could go. i'd like to see how i'd do against people from west coast and east coast. my locations are:
Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Southgate, Wyandotte, and Taylor. If you could make them ANYWHERE in those areas I could more than likely go.

Well the idea for MIDWEST monthlies would be for the MIDWEST to get together. We wouldn't be playing against EC or WC (but if tehy came it would be a welcome surprise). It's preparation for when we do have to fight them. Raising the skill levels of all midwesterners for when the time comes.

I'd say my house, but it's kind of out of the way for everyone, plus I'm going back to work next week so I won't be sure of my schedule. =(

I would have to agree. We thought Indiana would be the best place, but no one is really in the central of everyone. Too bad COK isn't in the center we would definiately host these.

Clearly they would be on a friday/saturday/sunday combination to clear up any confusion on dates.

i completley agree...

i was acutally about to post something like this.

a good portion of the reason i was going to quit was do to the fact i have no one to play but ike and that i just couldn't get more experience...

i agree with indy... we need something around there.

Why dont you have it in a different location every month, like say COK hosts it in there location for the first month and move it to Indiana the next month, then Illinois the month after. That way people that live in those locations can save some money from driving out to other states and such.

This sounds too good to be true. The other MW states have quality players of characters that I get like 0 experience with around here, so this would be much appreciated in sorting out those sorts of problems. I'm sure that this applies to everybody else as well. I'm all for it. :)

Yet again, though, the only problem is location... If we are going to do this "rotating" location thing, though, all of the locations considered should be centrally located. Like, COK is too good and all, but OH is just like way the heck over there. IN and MI do sound like solid choices for this, wherever we decide to stick these if we can get them off the ground.

I know that COK wouldn't care where it was at anywhere. It fact that might be a great idea. Assuming that we are able to keep communication of who is able to host each month or something. COK will be more than happy to host these. I'm assuming the Ship would too. So perhaps we get some MI and IL people to speak up about hosting and we could consider this.

You need to change your location to something that
All the MW people are too spread apart. It seems that the Chicago area has the most people, so it may be a good idea to have it near there. I don't mind doing that drive once a month, really.

How come no one lives in Indianapolis indeed, that would be a really great spot I believe.

Hey, I just want to throw in my two cents if you guys don't mind. Chicago land does hold a good percentage of the high class smashers. I'm just sayin'.

Chicago isnt an option because of having high class smashers, it is an option because it has many smashers, and quite possibly people willing to host these..

Regardless I'm sure I wont be able to get out to these save for if one was ever hosted in MN, but nonetheless, it seems like a great ideal...

Remember, the goal isn't to accomodate the good smashers, it is to make the MW more unified, and more skilled as a whole...

it means we are discussing parts of the MIDWEST where we should hold a tourney and you named parts of DETROIT. even if detroit were a central location, which it isn't, that would still be silly.

i seem to remember you noobing it up in another topic too.

SMYM is the biggest midwest series besides MLG and FC.

Well, I hope some are in MI. As it is, I'm stuck at college alone, unless the Midland guys get back into the scene and can/feel like driving to these.

I miss all my friends in the Midwest. ;_;

I was going to say the same thing. I think there would be more exposure if it jumped a state every month, to the point that someone like an MI smasher could hit up the one in MI, then OH and skip the IL if he can't make it, and even if he can't make IL maybe those like him in OH can have an MI/OH smashfest while the IL one occurs. A homebase approach would only attract those local smashers and serious smashers, while a tour de Midwest method would see all sorts of different local and regional smashers on a monthly basis.

Just calling it the tour de' midwest, and having it occur over the course of the year gives it a season sort of feel, then we could easily make a midwest rankings based solely on these tournaments too

Seriously, the Flame of Bowser series used to be the premier midwest tournament series because of its central location. Having it at Purdue in West Lafayette (close to Indianapolis) is probably the most central location for IL/IN/MI/KY/OH. If MN/WI want in, we should try to host one in Chicago.

Also, Cunning and Iggy are rooming at Purdue, plus Joshu has an apartment. We should have a good shot at finding a place to host.

The idea of a traveling event is great, but flawed. If we host it in Champaigne, MI and OH won't come, holding it in OH will see the opposite. It's great to say that you'd travel anyway because it'd be so awesome, but we're talking monthlies here. We want everyone to come as often as possible.

Joshu for President of the Midwest Monthly Managerie. Mathos for Vice President.

we've a place about 20 min. east from us that called X-treme gaming. its like a gaming lan place for all games. they have like 15 Tvs there already. squared has been there as well. but it isnt nowhere near centered <_<. its in IN though. would be better for the IN/IL/MI people, but not so much for OH/KY.

lmk what you people think/ i can talk to the owner anytime you need if we need to.

Although traveling monthlies would be sweet. If you only wait to go to the monthly near you, then do you really go anywhere to travel for tournies?

Unfortunately I don't think a dorm room or a apartment will be big enough. Assuming everyone is gungho like they say they are. It seems it would have to be someone's house if 30 or 40 people arrive. I don't remember how many came to Illiana/Ohmi (House to COK), but those were good numbers but could easily increase.

EDIT: I didn't read the third page (DOH!). I think that would be a great idea, Tink. Renting out a place like that would be perfect. The only problem I could see is that its doesn't have that home vibe that you would get from a house run thing. We would only be allowed in the store/thing for so long.

But are everyone's house that big to hold that many people though? Gamestores and possibly churches would work better for this, dorms would work well in this situation as well.

chances are i wont be able to go to any of these unless they are in MI or OH since i work 7 days a week now =/ but ill see what i can do. i like the idea, i really think thats y the EC has so many talented players, cause they all live within like 2 or 3 hours from eachother. MW still has a few players that are in the top 15, but we could have so much more in the next few months. JOSHU FOR PRESIDENT!

Heh, in researching my Midwest history project, during the most active times in the Midwest we generally had tournaments once a month that basically everyone attended. At the end of 2004 it was

FoBIII
SMYM2
MWM3

and this was replicated several other times, generally with SMYM, FoB, etc. I think if we are going to do this, have a rotation between:
SMYM
FoB
COK
Somewhere in southern Michigan
one per month.

Andy is talking about SMYM in late September already. We also need to avoid all MLG dates if we want to make it serious.

Not to sound elitist, but we all know who the serious tournament players are in the Midwest and it looks like virtually everyone has contributed on this discussion already. If we come to a consensus on this, and we make our efforts to attend these tournaments and make the circuit semi-official, then the rest of the boards population will follow. This would also be a chance to institute an official rankings system, which I'd be happy to help with or be in charge of.

Amazing how my opinion changes when Prime speaks. If we were to run tournament series in tandem like we used to, it would basically provide the monthlies that we're looking for.

Just to kick things off:

August - ?? (COK?)
September - SMYM
October - FOB?
November - ?? (MI?)

If another crew like SHEP wants to host a regional event, that'd be cool too. I'm not sure where the smash scene is in MI right now, but maybe the Midland guys could step it up since Lipton is out of the hosting scene.

And maybe we should host a large tournament in December. Try to make it a two or three day event to draw national interest, similar to GO and OC1 a couple years back. Then we can start the cycle again in February!

Would rankings be continuous or seasonal?

PRIME FOR SECRETARY OF RANKINGS! JOSHU FOR PRESIDENT! MATHOS FOR VICE-PRESIDENT!!

Well, and what I am thinking is not that we HAVE to have a SMYM, FoB, whatever, but if we give AOB, say, the authority over one of the tournaments, then he can choose to delegate it to say, Viperboy for a E=MC. If Joshu is running Flame of Bowser, or Liptonbuddy running the Michigan one, and either of them want to delegate it to SHEP, that's fine too. I also like this system because we can have some variation in the rules from tournament to tournament. I'm sure at this point anyone we'd put in charge of a tournament would be responsible with rule-setting.

Another Approach: In the past I suggested having a commitee that would take applications and decide which tournaments would be the "official" tournaments for each month, but it was not feasible at the time with the community that we had. I think the time is ripe for it though. If we get 5 responsible representatives together, there's no reason we can't do this approach either, a la the Smash Power Rankings. Mature discussion is actually possible now.

Off the top of my head, something like...
Commissioner: KishSquared
East Region: Mathos
North Region: Liptonbuddy
West Region: AOB
Central Region: Tink/Joshu, but maybe not Joshu because two Ship members
Just to throw out some names. Those 5 would be the ones to share responsibility for the league, and would take votes on stuff if they needed to.

I say if we want to make it even more official, keep points like MLG and take 25% of the pot out each time for a final, total points 1st-3rd place. With a monetary reason, that would really encourage people to go to each one.

^_^

EDIT: Oh, and we'd definitely need a webmaster too. We still have the MELEE-FC space, right?
