shouldnt the rule sets atleast follow closely to MLGs rule sets? i mean, were training the MW to do good, and MLGs are a big test of ones skill <_<. or am i wrong? idk

We're not trying to be MLG, just increase the all-around level of skill of the Midwest and provide a focal point for gatherings. Training under different sets of rules is good, helps you adapt. Plus, we're still having fun.

It's not like the rulesets would be horrible. They could all go through the committee for approval. Just knowing what I know about you all, I'm guessing it'd be something like:
SMYM: close to FC/MLG standard
FoB: more open
COK: slightly more restricted than FC/MLG
MI: POKEMON STADIUM ONLY FOR RANDOM WHAT NOESSS?!?!?!11

But seriously, there's no reason why this would do anything but help, and it would continue to test the game in different ways. It forces some preparation and strategizing on the part of players too.

EDIT: Man I really want to do this now. Let's be the first region to pull together and have something ridiculously official and cool.

Having it at Purdue in West Lafayette (close to Indianapolis) is probably the most central location for IL/IN/MI/KY/OH. If MN/WI want in, we should try to host one in Chicago.
No mention of IA or NE? I know IA sucks in terms of skill, but NE rocks (compared to us at least, heh)! We feel far away from all you guys. :(

I like the idea of the location moving each month. Has Minneapolis been mentioned? I'd be able to make that, or perhaps Chicago if this gets big enough.

Sadly the main nexus of smashers in the Midwest is in the IL/OH/MI area, with ironically very few in Indiana.

Smashers from Nebraska and Missouri have made the drive to SMYM and FoB before. Is there a place further West that has held major tournaments and would want to host one of these? I would not mind seeing SMYM be the championship, final tournament, like Squared was talking about, but it'd be best to find a fifth tournament.

We have the MELEE-FC webspace. I could link it to a completely different URL too, something like midwestleague.com or something.

Wow, Prime I am in love. That idea is wonderful. Making sure that you know to plan the tournament months in advance, a rotation of locations, rankings, offices. There's so much information flowing it makes me wants to . . . . . .

Anyway if we seriously are going to do this I can plan COK2 for sometime in October or November seeing that SMYM6 is in September. August is too soon to make plans, we're going to have to rent a place out :(. But fortunately it will be at, what I believe, is an amazing location. I know for COK we will have close to MLG rule set but we have tweaked some of the stages.

And why don't we use the MW crew site, we can use that for MW events and crew. It seems to go hand-in-hand. But if you want to use the FC site, by all means go ahead.

Actually, they're the same webspace, just different domain names ^_^ Like I said, we could buy a new URL if we wanted to do so.

The difference between COKE and SHIP is that we tweak stages in different directions!

Why was I nominated for Commissioner?

Technically the Midwest Crew site is hosted on the FC site, but we'd have to open it up to all registrants if we were to use that. I don't see why we can't just use smashboards as our forum, we're not trying to jump out of the community.

Just above it. ^_^

I personally don't mind doing rankings but coordinating everything is probably too much for me right now, which is why I didn't list myself. If I have an official "secretary" position I can still offer advice to the committee.

Any specific responses to the committee idea?

EDIT: I put you for commissioner because you and Mathos came up with this and Mathos will be running COK or the Ohio tournament. Technically you could be the "FC" rep as well.

Oh contrare silly Kishes, Spamthos was once addicted to the terrible game called World of Warcraft. Of course I have a headset. But really what are positions for? Its not like comissioner is going to raise money for things. But I assume details will come. I do like the idea of region or state coordinators.

I shall have a thread up soon about COKII. Once I get away from work (haha work)

Regional positions are there to have representation.

The idea of having 5 people is that they can give yay or nay decisions to tournament applications and rulesets. There may come a time where there is no one to, say, host the Ohio tournament, and applications have to be delivered and decided upon.

The commissioner would have ultimate authority just in case a decision would have to be made, but it would probably be unnecessary with the voting system. Just like in the Smash Rankings thread, Chillin reserved the right to pull any ballots he deemed completely unreasonable.

If you don't have someone in charge everyone is just shouting every which way. Best to just give 5 people some authority and let everyone else advise.

I don't think it'd be that big of a time commitment, just a couple smashboards pms here and there. Shrug.

Also, I was planning on looking into getting a bigger place to hold FoB, like one of the big empty areas in the dorms where the cafeteria is supposed to be but for some reason isn't
I think it's super cheap to rent out for students... and as far as I know not really any time restrictions, the lan party I went to there went all through the night
and housing in my apartment afterwards
It's two stories so should be enough space
probably

I accept any position willing to be given. I think this idea rivals that of the first occurence of FC. This will be great for Midwest in so many ways.

This isn't trying to limit the tournies that the Midwest will have. Its trying to make a standard in which everyone should be trying to apply themselves to. With everyone coming to specific tournaments every month we will eventually figure out who we need for the MW team as well as raising everyone's skill level. Smashers will be able to go to other tournies in the month, but the idea is to have a collection of the most dedicated to help the MW community.

If you seriously want me to get skype I shall get it.

yes i'm more than willing to hold another tourney for the E=MC series if anyone wanted me to...

i really like this idea of us holding at least one per month... it'll give us a heads up for the EC... lots more expierence for all characters.

lol @ columbus being the center of the midwest... in fact, anything further east of ohio is called East Coast... i'm pretty sure Illinois is the center, honostly.

the KY guys can always just come through my place and i can drive them wherever... also AOB will probly be retaining a seat in my car for these...

Well, don't take anything I said too seriously. We'll bounce around some ideas tonight and see where they go, I'm not seeing ANY opposition.

If you seriously want to be considered for an officer position in this project please speak up.

Not that it matters, but here's my two cents:

The people who don't travel for tournaments aren't going to want to travel for monthlies either. It's not like they choose how far they are willing to go for smash; their circumstances dictate that. By having a stationary monthly smash fest, you aren't gathering a different or even more consistent crowd (at least that's what I think). The truth is, people have to take off time from work/ life to travel for a game. People aren't going to want to schedule more time off more often for monthly smash fests. It might be awesome for the 4 smashers in indiana, but for the rest of the borderline smashers (me) far from a central location, it's just another tourney/smash fest to miss.

Please let me know if it will be in Ohio ever (by that I mean please post the final format sometime). It sounds like an awesome idea, and it could get very big. But if it's in a set location then it'll end up being another tourney/gathering that I'll get nagged to go to and end up not going to :)

Like I said, I'll have to see how my work schedule goes, but if this we'll be as big as most people say it is, I'll have to find a different SSA venue besides my basement. =P

Yeah, this'll be awesome if its done right. I live 10 minutes from Chicago, so Illinois/Indiana tourneys aren't far.

i wanna be a rep =(

and since by november i wont mind driving anywhere, but i think they should keep the monthlies in either IN or OH, since they are basically within 1-2 states from any of the serious/tourny going players, cept for like darkrain. i would be selfish and say lets have one in MI now and then ^^ but thats kinda up to like 2 an a half states away from some people. i wouldnt mind going to ohio or upper IN really, anywhere within 3-5 hours i would be fine with.

Right now, if I can say anything for certain, it is that
FoBV
COKII
SMYM6
will all be a part of the tour for sure. Lipton said that he may not have the venue to host one of these.

We are tossing around a kickoff tournament for the first weekend in September, and after consulting with AOB the schedule Squared and I are proposing looks like...
September 2 - Kickoff tournament (South Bend?)
Late September - SMYM/Open to applications?
October 28 - COK II
December 2 - Flame of Bowser V
Late December/Early January - Championship - Champaign, IL SMYM

With this schedule we avoid all MLG conflicts, with the only potential conflict being for Nationals in Vegas hence the two dates in Nov and Dec. As for Flame of Bowser, it is more central like SMYM so it would be best to have them later into the winter so weather is not as much of a problem. Mathos, what do you think about those dates?

Also, I think Mathos, KishSquared, and AOB should all be official, founding members. Dope has thrown his name in. Anyone else care to toss in their names? Preferably regular tournament hosts from non-OH, IN, and IL states. Then again, do we even need or want more people?

Well I wanted to make COKII either on October 14th or November 4th. That way Drephen will have no johns about The Best **** Band In The Land, but unfortunately I realized MLG has to be mean to me. But no worries October 28th is my 21st birthday weekend. What better way to throw a bash than having a COKII. This makes me excited.

I would hope that MI could host a tounry in there. Even though Dope doesn't mind about driving, that wouldn't be fair to JV, Mikey, Montross, TehOwnage, Joel, and others. I think Michigan should try and work out a venue.

I think those dates sound excellent. We need to keep in mind of any huge tournies on the EC and South though (like a GS3 or something). In case midwesterners want to go to those. However, I didn't see any huge ones

Wait is Drephen in the marching band at OSU? While Notre Dame's is better, that's still pretty awesome.

I edited the post to fit. Sounds like a plan for now. Technically South Bend would be reasonably close to Michigan if that is our kickoff tournament.

My only concern with a Michigan tournament is Missouri people. South Bend isn't THAT much closer...but it still probably knocks 3 hours off an 10+ hour trip. I know we can't satisfy everyone, but I really wanted to try to keep all the tournaments within 7 hours of all the major states (as in leave home at 5 get there at midnight kind of scenario). Then again, I'm not sure that Columbus fits that description.

Also one of the Michigan guys would have to come up with a venue. I think every one of these tournaments will be held in some kind of building that's not a house at this point. Squared is looking into facilities around here for a kickoff tournament.

AOB has said he's willing to run two SMYM tournaments that close together if we don't get other bids for the September date.

Drephen will be trying out for the marching band. So as a just in case I figure I would strike OSU homegames.

For COKII, the venue I picked out isn't technically a house, but is pretty much the same thing. My ex-girlfriend has this amazing party barn thing. Its a two level room with electricity, pool table, ping pong, darts, and ski hockey. They would also be able to provide housing to those that would like that. Housing could either be done at my parents home (who won't care) or at the venue (its used as a gymnastics summercamp). So does that sound okay to everyone or would you like me to rent a hotel conference room or something. Either way I believe we'll have to spend money on a site, but I bet the party barn will be a lot cheaper. Perhaps I should make a tread about COKII instead of blabbing on this.
