Full Title: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Other Titles: MGS4
System: PlayStation 3
Publisher: Konami
Developer:Hideo Kojima (producer, director)
Shuyo Murata (director)
Kenichiro Imaizumi (producer)
Yoji Shinkawa (character designer)

ESRB Rating: M (Most Likely)
Genre: Stealth/Action
# of Players: Single, Online Multiplayer

Confirmed in 2005 to be the last iteration in the Metal Gear Solid series.

Although Hideo Kojima stated he was going to leave after the release of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, it was announce in May 2005 that he would return. He is co-directing the game with Shuyo Murata.

Plot

Set several years after the Manhattan incident (the events of Metal Gear Solid 2), MGS4 portrays a world where the restriction of military intervention on foreign soil has eased, leading to demands on mercenaries to fight proxy battles for business purposes, fueling the need for private military contractors (PMCs) and automated weapons.

However, the five largest PMCs are revealed to be owned by a single mother company, Outer Heaven (the name of Big Boss' mercenary company and fortified nation in the original Metal Gear), operated by Liquid Snake via the possessed Revolver Ocelot. It is revealed that Outer Heaven has amassed a military equivalent in power to the United States' own, as well as the rest of the world.

With the world once again in crisis, Solid Snake, now suffering the advanced aging effects of his cloned heritage, is deployed by the United Nations to infiltrate Outer Heaven's headquarters in the Middle East.

According to the 2006 E3 trailer, the following characters have been visually confirmed to be in the game.

* Solid Snake
* Meryl Silverburgh
* Naomi Hunter
* Otacon
* Colonel Campbell
* Liquid Ocelot (Revolver Ocelot, rumored to be completely possessed by Liquid Snake's arm)
* Raiden

Mei Ling, Vamp, and Johnny Sasaki have also been confirmed.

Also, unlike the last two games, Solid Snake will return as the main character. He has aged greatly and appears decades older, a result of advanced cellular degenaration from his cloned genes.

Changes from the other games

Kojima has stated that with the PlayStation 3, he will be able to focus on the things we can't see, and to explore the senses that videogames rarely tap into. For example, if a building is severely damaged, the resulting sound from a nearby explosion could cause the building to crumble and fall. This is similar to Kojima's attempts to let players "feel the air" in MGS2, using the PS2's power to add airborne dust, density of atmosphere and humidity to the game world.

Furthermore, he is planning to consult psychiatrists on how to emphasize a "mental battle" between Snake and his enemies, so that "who controls the fear can decide the outcome". The game's trailer hints that the tactical Metal Gears featured in the game are designed to play with Snake's emotions: one unit paws the ground and growls like a bull while hunting for Snake, while another makes cicada noises to create a false sense of security.

Continuing with this theme, the soldiers Snake will encounter are not specifically friends or enemies at first - rather, the player's actions towards them will influence how they respond to Snake. In an interview in Edge, Kojima stated that he plans to allow players to have a greater effect on the enemy than just fighting them, allowing alliances and aggressions to form and change between Snake and the other parties on the battlefield.

Also, Snake will be partnered with a robotic navigator, remotely by Otacon. Snake will use the Mk. II to communicate with him, serving as a substitute to the CODEC radio system from previous games. Kojima has also commented that the development team will experiment with the idea of controlling the Mk. II via remote control for reconnaissance using the Playstation Portable, although the feature might not be in the final game if it is not considered practical.

Kojima has also gone on record that there is no relation between a near-identical robot in his previous game Snatcher and the one Otacon manipulates.

The game is planned to utilize a new 360-degree third-person camera system in addition to the top-down camera used in the previous three Metal Gear Solid games. An experimental version of this camera system is included in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Another feature that debuted in Subsistence, an online battle mode, will also be featured in MGS4.

In a first for the series, the graphics will emphasize natural movement in actions such as an enemy's discovery of Snake, thus eliminating the need of exclamation marks or question marks as indicators. However, recent interviews suggest that they may be reinstated for nostalgic reasons.

Continuing but simplifying the camouflage system seen in MGS3, Snake will wear "Octocamo" (named after the octopus' camouflage ability), which will be mimetic and will imitate the appearance of the environment it's in.

Personally, this game alone is almost enough for me to buy a PS3

And no, I wont resize the images

It is sounding like an amazing game, and I will have to buy a PS3 so I can play it (which makes me sad). And although they were annoying I hope the exclamation mark stays just because it would be nostalgic sake, especially if it is the last MGS game we'll be seeing. But I am sure this game will kick serious ***, and if I can't afford a PS3 I'll just hire one and hire the game because I seriously will have to play this game... thats just how good it is looking, especially from those screen shots.

LOL who would of thought an arm could contain someone's consciousness... not me but Liquid Ocelot proved me wrong.

So I guess you got around to playing the other Metal Gears?

Raiden is so cool now. He went from being a whiny man to a awesome cyborg fighting ninja.

I'm dissapointed that this game isn't coming to the Wii, even after Snake got into Brawl. I dont love this series enough to buy a PS3 for it.

Good luck getting a PS3 on launch date. And the Sonic game for the 360 and PS3 looks fun, well, atleast the Sonic levels. Silver's levels are all about using the game physics and Shadow's levels look like they'll be terrible (vehicles). Anyways. That's for another topic.

MGS4... I do like the trailers I've seen for it, but I've never played a MGS game (Stealth and me don't mix). I've watched a few friends play MGS2 and a little of MGS3, but that's it. If any of my friends end up picking up a PS3, I'm sure I'll just end up watching them play some of this when it comes out in 2007.

I'm terrible at stealth. The first MSG I played I ended up killing 500 people, exactly. I think I heard that 40 was around normal.

Did anyone else notice that raiden flip from mgs2 in the trailer. He did it trying to get away from the mini metal gears' wires.

I used to be trigger happy in MGS... but I learnt my lesson in Snake Eater (up yours The Sorrow) ever since that boss fight I've always been more careful... just purely because it makes me shudder thinking about how long that fight can go on for. So when I do play this I'll be mega stealthy JUST in case.

That's because it's hard to convert games like these into the Wii controller.

I'm bumping this because it is such a great series

Does anyone know if Blockbuster still has the "Rent a game system" thing going?

I really want to play this game, but I do not want to buy a PS3 for it. I don't even know people who have one.

I think they stopped doing that.

Also, 20th Metal Gear Anniversary Event happened today and Kojima presented a 15 minute real-time PS3 demo. I assume most have watched it already?

After watching the demo, I actually want to get a PS3 just to play this game. I guess I'll wait for one of my friends to get it. The demo itself was amazing, especailly when watching the HD version. Lots of tiny random humor too. :laugh:

I think I will be forced to buy a PS3 just for MGS4, Kingdome Hearts 3, and God Of War 3, unless by some miracle all three of those go to the wii and/or 360.

After reading this, i really have to say that there are a rediculous amounts of reasons that MGS4 would never be on the Wii and the most important one is that the Wii could not only not handle the storage media but would also not be able to keep up with other hardware shortcomings.

Anyone saw the new trailer at Leipzig Games Convention 07? Interesting stuff. The names of those four biomechanical machines are based off MGS1 and MGS3 bosses.

Their names are Raging Raven, Laughing Octopus, Crying Wolf, and Screaming Mantis.

MGS3 reference:

Laughing = the Joy
Screaming = the Pain or Fear
Raging = the Fury
Crying = the Sorrow

MGS1 reference:

Screaming Mantis --> Psycho Mantis
Raging Raven --> Vulcan Raven
Sniper Wolf --> Crying Wolf
Decoy Octopus --> Laughing Octopus

I'm one in the masses of people saving up for a Playstation 3 for the sole purpose of this game. I'm a huge Metal Gear fan, from the very first game.The plots of these games have so much depth, it's not funny. Each game amazed me, and is one of the few series that actually drew me into the story. I love the character design, and how each game, each character get's a slightly different persona , because of recent events. The graphics are amazing, and the gameplay phenominal.

Long story short: I'm buying it.

I have a unique style of playing the MGS games in that I don't kill anybody. I usually throw(MGS3) or tranquilize them with the M9 or the PSG1-T( Mk22 and Mosin Nagant for MGS 3).
Just so you know, that MGS4 on Xbox 360 rumor was burned, shot down, and destroyed twice when Kojima confirmed it would remain a PS3 exclusive at E3 and TGS this year. Even the retailer that said the rumor apologized for it being false.

I bought a PS3 and I only have 2 games: Ninja Gaiden and some dungeon crawler (I think it's called Dark Kingdoms or something). It's sitting here in my room collecting dust because I haven't used it in months. Hopefully this game will force me to warm it up again.

Get Warhawk, LocoRoco Cocchiro (whatever it is), and Resistance. If you can't enjoy those games, you really shouldn't be playing video games.

This just in. According to Japanese and English language press releases on the Konami Web site, the game will now be coming to Japan in the first quarter of 2008, and other regions in the second quarter. This means we won't get Guns of the Patriots until the summer of 2008, people. It was delayed to according to Konami, "...to make further improvements to the quality of the game and provide even greater enjoyment for more customers worldwide."
Doesn't make a difference to me. What do you gus think?

Awesome to hear. Now I can spend time saving and finish classes.

Kojima is a perfectionist with his games.

Some people are thinking March 2008, but I wouldn't be surprised if this got pushed back into the later quarters.

I'd bet that it will be released in the fall though since most game publishers tend to not release high profile games over the summer.

Beaten every Metal Gear game to date..even the old ones.. this saddens me to see it only for the Ps3, as I wont be getting one anytime soon :/

Hate to see my favourite series go to such a lame system.

Now I'll have more time to save up money and finish Twin Snakes, MGS2, and Subsistence. I might even have time to beat Metal Gear and MG2!
Hmm. I've beaten Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I'm still playing Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and have yet to get a PSP for Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Believe it or not but the versions of MG1 and MG2 in Subsistence and PO are part of the series' official canon.
This delay gives me more time to get a PSP.

Konami has confirmed the release date to be June 12 of this year. It's worldwide again.
