Metagame Discussion: Countering Ledge Camping/Planking

Considering the fact the Falco Boards have been pretty dead regarding discussion ever since I joined SWF, I think it is about time we got something started and discussed.
--------------------------------
After searching over the fourms I found that many characters feel that Falco has nothing on them if they attempt to plank. After playing a few people that have done this I understand why.

The first counter that comes to mind in combating Ledge Camping is to simply take the percent lead at first. Doing that will make it pointless for them to ledge camp as they will be eating up the clock bring it closer to the time where you would end up winning by running out of time.

However, if Falco does not obtain the percent lead and they attempt to ledge camp, Falco will be stuck with an approach into a situation that gives him pretty much a clipped wing. What can Falco do to counteract this given you never got the percent lead?

Which characters in particular do you want to talk about? Because most MK's have abandoned ledge camping in favor of air planking.

less abandoned. more been banned. and yet still both r very wak. only advice i have, is be the one w/ higher hp. if not run to edge and down tilt shield. see what he does if you approach him. then try again and react from what u learned

Pretty much, any character can abuse planking against us which is why I didn't mention a specific character. Pit is probably the biggest known user of ledge planking as he can actually shot arrows at people causing them to approach anyway. However, with our reflector we can just spam it and arrows do not harm. But, if we have the loss in percent lead we will have to try to attack him. Even DDD can ledge camp us to a degree because Bair/Uair are pretty much greater than anything we can do when trying to approach him.

So, you think we might not have anything at all to try to counter this apart from taking the percent lead? If we happen to lose the percent lead it is pretty much a lost match right then and there? I want to think we can try something. Maybe a stage perhaps. I always thought that something like Delfino, Pirate Ship, or something like that where the ledges appear or dissppear or are not lethal for us to try to approach offstage. I mean if we approach offstage and land in the water it is not a total lost cause. Plus, we have the ability to use the reflector at a distance to try to hit people at the ledge from a distance due to how attacks go through the ship's front and back.

sometimes you gotta be gutsy and run off and bair. But if they like release and regrab once or twice, never go for is as they will be expecting it. Its best to just predict it, and if they do try to get back on the stage you can poss react with a double jump bair.

Planking is hard. I usually wait it out and do a lot of empty approaches. I don't think its smart to go off stage unless your opponent has no jump and a bad upB.

Pit planking is a pain, but his actual laser planking is beatable. Just hit him before he fires an arrow, if not reflect until you feel comfortable.

Nair/Uair planking is dumb, I just try getting ballsy here with bair.

since planking is banned, if the plank, just stop firing lasers or edgegaurding (cause it isn't planking if you don't let them up) and then if they spend like 5 seconds on edge, call the TO.

Pit can shoot lasers and then the tactic is known as camping.

He is using the advantageous position of the edge to constantly hit you. The shiz is legal.

I'm not sure where the legality stands for most, but the fact is that it does happen, and it's a pain for Falco to approach upon.

But yeah, I like the idea to pop pit with a few lasers on his way back up. However, you have to make sure you don't spam grounded lasers. Pit can just hop back up with his shield hitting you with the lasers.

When a Metaknight planks I just run to the edge, shield, then see what my opponent does

If he doesn't do anything, well you probably have to do something about it and just bair :S

G&W's plank is quite brutal as well

If G&W is planking, he will stage spike you if you ever go off. Fish Bowl > Stage spike. Pretend to die and fall off the bttom of the screen > SURPRISE *****! I can UpB and still grab the ledge from here > stage spike.

There really isn't anything (safe) that Falco can do to stop planking opponents. Our best bet is to come up with so many options that it at least becomes a guessing game as to what we're going to do. How does jumping way off > phantasm back work? Or maybe even jump off > fall a bit > Firebird?

I don't know. I don't even play this game anymore :(

Yeah PS1 planking is definitely horrible

With the new ledge grab rules which are often at tournaments, planking shouldn't be TOO much trouble. Air camping is a pain though

Any time an MK air camps me they typically want to try to hit me with Dair. So they decide to stay close. If I tried to jump up with lasers, I would more than likely get hit and edgeguarded while they eat a little 2% laser. Just saying from personal experience.

It seems like Falco does not really have many options at all to combat planking. YOu just need to choose the most stage friendly you can.
