Ike is pretty much a tank....he's land based and sort of anti-air. Marth is a good air person considering he is fast and can jump around pretty acrobatically. What would the best strategy be to overthrow an ike-user? speed, technique, or pure dodging skills?

Marth has the speed and aggressiveness, Ike has the power and defensiveness.

In order for Marth to win he has to abuse his overall mobility and give Ike no breathing room to fight back. Marth will lose if he lets up and allows Ike to get the momentum. Marth is easily KO'd by Ike at pretty low percentages so Marth can't afford to take a lot of hits.

Avoid Ike's attacks, use Dolphin Slash a lot, and gimp properly.

Also, check out the match-up discussion. It has plenty of information.

Actually, Ike isn't anti air really, he can go aerial, he just doesn't have a great aerial game like Marth or other characters. Gimping and a close up game is pretty much all you need to say here. If you can get them under the stage and decently far away from it, Ike's lost his stock. His recovery is horrible, and can only Quick Draw recover when he's above the stage and when he's decently close and above even, and Aether really works when he's just about under the stage. Dolphin Slash is an excellent move to use. Since Ike's moves are decently laggy, if you play an up-close or a game where Ike doesn't have even 1 chance to attack, you'll win pretty easily. Only thing in that case to watch out for is his jab. Other than that, Ike's only bet there is trying to hit you with B-Air, and getting good spacing to at least get a F-Tilt off. This is a decently easy match-up for Marth IMO. Watch some videos of some Marth players against some decent Ike players for some ideas on the Match-up and also as someone gave you a link to the Ike Match-up thread, I'd ask some questions there.

So relentlessness is basically the key.... i'll try it and see but that is relatively hard to not let up when he has the same counter move you do...

also, where can i find some sort of guide to the "marth lingo" like dtilt and dolphin slash cause i have NO idea what any of that means...

... the Marth guide... but seriously, how do you not know the name of your character's OWN MOVES??

dtilt is down tilt... like ftilt is forward tilt and then there are smashes as well... (the the f, u, and d)

Just dont play dumb and run into stupid **** and keep safe. If so, Ike has nothing really on huge on Marth, well power, but w/e. Ftilt as good range, fair beats ours, but both moves are avoidable.

Be careful when above Ike, USmash and Uair are deadly.

Ike's Nair is pretty good. It's fairly quick, has decent range, autocancels, and can be followed up at low %'s.

Learn Ike's Jab range and beware of Jab Cancel shenanigans. Ike's Jab is among his best moves (if not the best), so learn how to deal with it. Dolphin Slash works well against Jab.

Because... the range difference essentially means Marth will be tilting Ike before Ike will be jabbing Marth. If, for whatever reason, Marth is airborne vs. Ike and Ike is going for a jab, Marth's first slash of Dancing Blade comes out a single frame slower than Ike's jab and has more range.

They're all good moves overall, though.

The first hit of Ike's jab as poor range compared to our moves. The second hit comes out on frame 18 iirc. Meaning if we space at ftilt or dtilt at tip range, we can easily hit him before the third hit of the jab comes out. Even if it does, you can simply shield and punish. You can get a shield up for the third hit of the jab if you press shield when you see the first jab, Im obviously taking into account human reflexes. Ike's jab shouldnt be a problem for Marth, if he spaces correctly. If your getting destroyed by his jab, watch what your doing and youll notice that your spacing is failing. A good Marth will stay at tip range this game and wait for openings and just strike then. The best use of Ike's jab on Marth, imo, is to punish lag when you cant use a fsmash, rofl.

Discussing character matchups should be left to the character matchup thread, yes?
