I was playing against my brother when I did this. I was dashing towards him and hit c-stick down. Normally he should make a dash attack but instead he did down smash making a huge slide. Tried it again but didnt work though... What just happened?

I don't think you were dashing, you were definitely running.

This would be why you can't replicate it with dashing, because you'll only do a dash attack. This slide you get from running is amazing, and I use it all the time to space F-Smash and D-Smash. Occasionally Jab too.

There's a difference from a dash and a run? wtf I'm not up with the times.

You probably did a foxtrot with the foxtrotting the part. This is a part of "true pivoting" for Marth in SSBB too.

People use "dash" to refer the initial burst of speed out of which you can immediately change directions by dashing in the opposite direction - you can dashdance and foxtrot out of dash. The dash animation lasts slightly under a second, after which you go into your running animation.

No...

Marth's dash has nothing to do with his run.

Marth has the fastest run in the game (tied with Fox).

Marth's dash has an initial pivot time, which is 5 frames (i.e. stutter steps/dash dancing), then after this is 12 frames of 'initial dash' (i.e. up to frame 17) where from that point you'll be able to shield.

As far as I know, dashing is the initial part of running, running is the point after the dash where you move fast, and walking is moving where you could still use any move. That's just me. I tend to consider running and dashing as the same thing.

Okay. To stop confusion completely:

Dashing is the animation where Marth is going at a full sprint low to the ground to build up speed. (You can't use Down or Forward Smash out of this animation.

Running is the animation where Marth looks like he's actually running quickly, but he's not going at a full sprint like Dashing. (You can use any move out of this animation besides dash attack)

Walking is where Marth looks like he's showing off fashion designer's clothes because only his legs are moving and his torso is completely upright. Obviously this is slower than running. (Same as running)

No..... Dashing is the initial animation you go through when you jam the analog to move. While in this animation, you can't do anything.

Running is what happens if you hold the analog to the side after you dash.

Walking is simply tilting the analog to the side and moving at a slower rate than a run. This encompasses the "Walking" and "Running" Inle mentioned in the post above this one.

And that seems to have settled it right there. Well, atleast from my perspective. if more things arise from this the thread will be reopened, but until then it will be indefinitely closed.
