The patch modifies characters' attributes. Replays are only saved as strings of button inputs, meaning if characters' attributes are changed, the replay desyncs and no longer functions correctly. So any replays saved before the update is released will no longer work after the patch is applied.

Yeah. Actual video would be prohibitively large (probably talking about 50-100 MB per minute, depending on whether it recorded at 60fps, resolution, etc.), and probably kill the processor, so it just stores button input data. So, if you see Lucina walk forwards for just over 1 second and do a f-tilt, the replay just records "hold control stick right for 87 frames; at frame 79 button A was pressed". If Lucina's walk speed is changed, however, she will cover more/less distance in that 87 frames, resulting in a desync (the replay plays back a completely different game to what you originally played). So that's why they have to disable older replays once the new patch comes out.
So that's why you can't transfer to say... Youtube?
Pretty much, yes. It would need to convert the button inputs into a full, Youtube-compatible video (which takes ages, even for normal videos on my computer), store it somewhere (would be a problem if your SD card is getting full/you don't have one), and then upload it. Mario Kart 8 can do that with ghost data, but of course the Wii U is a different, more powerful beast, and even on that it takes ages to process and upload everything, and cannot do any longer than 1 minute, so I wouldn't bank on it being part of Smash for Wii U either (go on Sakurai, prove me wrong).
I want that future in the Wii U version so badly.

Well, the plot does remind me a bit of the second Mystery Dungeon game. Traveling back in time to stop some dragon from wreaking havoc... Said character traveling back also getting separated from at least one friend, having their alliances unclear to the audience and leads at first, and also being connected to one of the protagonists somehow. And using a god/legendary to travel back in time in the first place.
This makes an insane amount of sense. Turning into a more powerful form that's only temporary...Speaking of Manakete's................
Ah, another one of my favorite Pokémon. The fact that you basically catch him in a graveyard in the original D/P pretty much sold me on the awesome ghost centipede dragon.
