How unexpectedly wholesome.
That is such a cool comic. I’m a big Waluigi supporter, and was a big Ridley supporter since the Smash 4 days, and I definitely noticed how little his inclusion is brought up or glorified, despite how MASSIVE his support was back then. I sometimes still remind myself how surreal is to have him in. I can only hope Waluigi gets his chance too.

Anyways, my Ridley amiibo arrives tomorrow! Super hyped to have a physical representation of him.

I wonder...

Do any of you think Ridley personally trains the Aerotroopers in the Prime games? Prime 2 describes them as having "cold precision and utter cruelty" which isn't far from Ridley himself, and their kamikaze mentality seems to mirror Ridley's own lack of fear towards his own mortality, seen especially in his Norion boss fight.

This is a well-made comic. I really enjoy Ridley's little speech to Waluigi considering how similar they are in terms of Smash speculation. I remember those times when the Smash 4 Ridley was the largest support thread on Smashboards. Now it's ironic that Ridley was once the most talked about character in the speculation scene and now he is mentioned or highlighted here and there. Waluigi has for sure become the new Ridley with all the outcry from E3 and the detractors constantly mocking the Waluigi fanbase with all the "meme character" bull****. Like Ridley, Waluigi is gaining support rapidly and Nintendo has definitely noticed and they are listening. Just because Ridley hasn't been talked about as much as Isabelle and others doesn't mean he is less worthy than others. Ridley's confirmation meant the world to all of us here who had been wanting him in for many years. It proved that the fans can make all the difference that it gets the attention of Nintendo executives. It truly is significant to get on the coveted Smash roster and I couldn't have been so thrilled to see Ridley get his accolades that he so deserved. I'm a huge Waluigi supporter that has wanted him for over 10 years and I actually enjoy his character. He is pretty much one of the most relatable characters of the Mario cast. I hope Waluigi gets his chance to shine someday. He deserves it.

Well we’re all still enjoying Ridley and his inclusion, and it’s not like he’s being underappreciated or underused. Of course he was a hotter topic when we were still pulling for him years and years, but now that we got him, it’s more relax and chill like with other character subforums, and with all the times we had to deal with him not being allowed a thread due to unfortunate history, I’m happy to be getting used to the semblances of normalcy his community is getting here now.

I understand and felt for what that comic was going for and all, but then you still got stuff like this.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

If anyone is having difficulty reading it, you can find the original here. I think my favourite part is seeing the Grinch face first in the snow.

I am surprised, nobody here mentioned how hype was seeing Vreyvus using Ridley in Valhalla 2, and getting SECOND PLACE on an European Major. It's a huuge step forward for the representation of the character in the competitive scene, and i hope it opens some minds about the viability of our Pirate Leader. :O

Lowkey Ridley is being hella slept on. People do not like his recovery and his big body but all but buttons are pretty good. F Tilt, D Tilt, Nair, and Fireballs are all crazy strong. Honestly expect to see Ridley in mid tier at first but low key I feel he is high tier.

He's mostly a bait and punish type character I think, but yeah, the Vreyvus wins against the Palutena is definitely a boost in morale for any Ridley players.

He even got winner's side of Grands, unfortunately there was just no stopping Glutonny's Wario on the day, but I'm still psyched about it. Winning a major would have been massive for the character (and would have been extra lovely seeing as it was in my country :p), but Vreyvus still made a great showing of Ridley and his capabilities throughout the tournament, hopefully people pay attention.

Considering Vrey said he had like no Wario matchup experience going into the match, I'd say he did rather well against Gluttony! ^_^

Vrey's showing in Valhalla II was indeed amazing. It just shows the actual potential around Ridley and I've always said, this thing has the offensive capability of a high tier character. The only thing keeping him back is his, understandable, flaws. Unless something terrible happens to patches, there is almost no way he won't be at least mid tier, possibly even high mid tier.

At this point Ridley is doing too darn well and has too high ratings under his tail. Plus when it comes to patches, we might even see some improvement. Ridley in the West is seen as a pretty solid character, even good but in Japan, he's apparently terrible. I can only assume they play Ridley like actual Ridley by flapping around the stage, lobbing a fireball and trying to RAR Skewer into Reverse Side-B or something. They might feel that Ridley needs improvements in some way.

Regardless, it is really nice to see the space pirate get this kind of recognition and if the detractors were silenced before, they surely would be now.

I kinda forgot RARing was a thing before and just recently got into learning (or relearning) it with Ridley, mainly for the n-air uses which is easy. Can see how it’s good for b-air too though I’m less consistent at pulling that off atm. I should try practicing it with some specials next like how you mentioned.

edit: Okay, yeah, I wish skewer was easier to RAR, but eh.

So I just threw a full charge shadowball at Ridley doing his fireballs, it went through them and hit his mouth, it did the critical hit animation (not the red sparks, I mean the animation of him getting hit in his mouth) and he just tanked the hit with no knockback. He took a lot of damage but didn't budge.

Is this a Ridley glitch, or a shadowball glitch?

This always happens when you get a mouth hit on him. He takes a set amount of damage plus whatever hit him, but he only ever gets pushed back a bit.

Not really, even he, said Ridley is a mid tier, and he is indeed a mid tier.

The only gameplan for Rid is to be patient and bait things, he has no solid way of getting in besides spacing and once a good player gets in, youll get a filthy punish. He is outranged by all swordies and he is outspeed but all speedies/rushdown, his edgeguarding is actually decent and his kill power is pretty good, mostly with fsmash.

People at this stage are just "you are sleeping on x char" but the reality is people lacks the MU experience to exploit weaknesses, once you face a good fox, a good pika, a good swordie that actually knows the MU well then you will realize how limited he is.

Obviously im not saying he is a bad character by any means but his kit is decent at best, if you are winning a lot is because people really lacks the knowledge to punish you but if you actually play someone for more than 6 matches youll see how people adapt and one will struggle.

So this is a little off topic from what people have been talking about, but has anyone else set all the Metroid stages to the various "vs. Ridley" songs?

xD I would if I could as I don't have the game yet, but I will definitely consider doing that because Ridley got the best theme and remixes. :p

It really is amazing, and it always makes me happy to wind up on a metroid stage with vs. Ridley. Great motivation to win!

Those, as well as Theme of Samus Aran, Space Warrior.

But I still think both Dark Samus themes, Quadraxis theme and Rundas theme should have been in there.

Kind of lowballing Ridley here. Angled F-Tilt can actually outspace some of the swordies even as they try jumping in to hit Ridley's notorious blindspot. And can't forget that his tail is a disjoint most of the time, so at the least D-Tilt will clank with swords. FAir can at least contest other swordies so they don't have full reign in the air, the only issue being FAir is deceptively brief and easy to mistime and whiff.

People keep saying Ridley is basically a sword character, and the more I use him the more I have to agree. What's currently working out for me is mastering his aerial movement in order to space NAir as effectively as possible. Mix in his FAir and BAir, grounded disjoints, Plasma for foes that keep their distance, and Ridley's overall ground mobility, I really don't have that much difficulty approaching. It's because he does have that terrible disadvantage state that I can understand believing he can't approach. But he has a good enough kit to play forwardly. Which is what he wants in order to take advantage of his amazing advantage state.

And that's the #1 thing all Ridley players need to maximize and master: His advantage game - specifically popping people in the air, reading their landings, punishing, and extending the advantage even longer. I'd go as far as to say it's a total failure when the opponent's able to get back to neutral after only one stint in the air. UAir, UTilt, USmash, Plasma Stream to catch the landing, DSmash, SP Rush, and of course NAir... or a good ol' plain grab; All good tools to juggle, tech chase, extend, and punish. But we gotta get better at it. I certainly do.

---

As an aside, nice that Vreyvus's Ridley was mentioned for taking 2nd at a European Major. But also just recently we had Venom's Ridley go toe-to-toe against Ally's Snake at a Grand Finals - with Venom being the one who sent Ally to Losers. Unfortunately couldn't take it all, but still a great showing that could have gone differently with more Snake matchup experience.
