Meh this tournament i played very sloppy. My usual doubles partner was unable to make it which finding that out threw me off early on and wrecked my confidence going into the tournament. Though the person i ended up teaming with used to be one of my old doubles partners from brawl so we didn't do too bad.

As for singles though i dropped the ball big time. I also came to terms with the fact that i had formulated a lot of my play style of relying on Bthrow for clutch kills and seeing as that no longer works i'm going to have to come up with other ways to make up for it. Though in a customs legal tourney the fact that my one and only widely used custom set 1331 was essentially nerfed made the decision to use customs nonexistent for me given i haven't really studied up on or practiced really utilizing HSD yet. Overall i felt kind of meh about the whole event but definitely am taking this lose as a wake up call that i have to step up my game.

Pretty satisfied with my results, considering that I haven't played seriously for like a month (since the last tourney - save two or three matches, tops. Who has time for Sm4sh these days, anyway? ). Still having trouble with the Yoshi MU, specially a campy one.

Imma write a recap on my run in pro bracket since im bored:

Game 1: I realise im going up against Sheik who I generally go even with a lot, especially with the custom neddles that **** up shields, I drop game 1 by SDing but then proceed to take the 2 games I need and almost go to time game 2 but I feel proud despite hating every bit of the MU.

Game 2: I fight Powerhouse, who I fought in pools, mains ZSS and I hate that MU so I try out Pit...it went terribly and I got 2 stocked in under a minute, so knowing I was going to lose I switch to Sonic. But little did I know I had the download on the MU and how he plays and I was able to exploit that, taking game 2 then with a 100% lead on last stock on game 3...I fall off stage, end up underneath Smashville...I try and jump back for an upb recovery....I get sideb instead and SD losing the set.

Game 3: Edinbulba, I have a pretty good track record against his Falcon whenever we play, I take game 1 quite convincingly, I SD really early on game 2 by getting stuck under T&C after an upb, game 3 though I manage to 2 stock him after taking him to battlefield (I might like this stage now).

Game 4: I go on stream against Davbo, this was a result I was not expecting and was expecting to go against Muppet, who is a very good DHD player. Never the less I take this set quite convincingly, I could tell Davbo wasnt familiar with Sonic in any way with the amount of **** I got away with (Will link vid when it gets uploaded).

Game 5: I dont wanna talk about...I went off stream expecting to fight Flamjam and I knew how to deal with custom villager after fighting her in doubles, this however was not the case and I had to fight 8va....the first game was a Sonic ditto and I essentially didnt land a hit since I couldnt compose myself, game 2 I switch to Pit hoping for a chance....I give up and SD twice.

TL;DR: I SD....a LOT....

Took a lot of effort to get there, but I managed to mount a comeback on Alphicans, even if the first set of Grand Finals was really wonky and full of SDs. Can't rest easy though. He's still the better player with more experience, so I'll make sure to be ready for him next time too. He used to 3-0 me in Winners Finals, during Grand Finals, set 1 as it went to game 5, and for set 2 he went to as it came down to game 5.

I know he has a & in the wings, but I'm glad with how I did. I'm finally feeling like there's growth in me as a player.

Felt good to go back out after like a month's hiatus. One of my favorite venues and I got to commentate for the Brawl bracket. It was very nostalgic and I love a lot about it but I think I can confidently leave Brawl in the past. Commentating MK vs ICs was a bit excruciating. I chose not to enter as I didn't want it to mess with my Smash 4 game, and ultimately I think it was the better choice.

Lost to Shippo 1-2 today who I beat last time 2-1. He leveled up while I was out and it caught me off guard. Definitely close and has motivated me even more to go out. Sheik is so frustrating.

I beat iRJi's Yoshi which was interesting. He had a really unfortunate SD round 1 which I felt bad about, but that's how it goes sometimes. He was a good sport and a good dude about it though. I have to play so patient with Yoshi...

Got eliminated by a custom Fox... I ended up teaming with him in 3v3 funny enough and took 3rd which was pretty good for just slapping a team together on the spot lmao.

Fox is so tough Our neutral game is already weird but it might as well not even exist when put up against Fox.

Top 3 went to Angel, Avalon, and ADHD.
I can't tell if ADHD only plays this game to show how stupid customs are or... Only further emphasizing how much I hate them.

Ultimately, had a really great time and I want to keep pushing myself to be attending things regularly again. I can't let myself get rusty and slow down again. I want to grow as both a player, commentator, and moderator. Right now I'm stuck at this gatekeeper status of consistently placing around top 8 but just barely losing to the top players. This region is hard but some of the best practice I can get. I'm hoping to finally break this gate and go where the grass is greener...

Because money is green. Getting paid and winning would be nice.

Also, @Boxob. / @Boxob showed up and it was the first time I've seen him in years. Totally caught me off guard and it was great. He wanted me to let you know he's still alive and playing this game.

He got a kick out of all the :093: tags that I had on like a lot of the systems from being at this venue before, lmao. We joked about and reflected on Brawl board days. Good times.

So yeah, today was surprisingly nostalgic but also progressive at the same time.

Yesterday although I had gotten first I played really sloppy. Having had little to no sleep this week due to college finals really has burned me out. Only reason i was able to clutch out the tournament was probably due to the fact that I felt so mellow that I just kind of was doing stuff that happen to work. Especially given that the person I played in both Winners finals and grand finals I kind of taught how to play.

I went into this tournament almost completely cold (still playing on 3ds when I do lol), and got sent to Losers by my very first Mewtwo (Sicx).

I was really nervous at first, but I kinda got back in the groove of it, and by the Mewtwo match, it felt so familiar that I SDR'd off the smashville platform and BSBS'd to my death (shouted "OH CRAP WRONG GAME" lol), then ended up with another BSBS SD at the end of the first round XD

Got too greedy for F-smash and lost the 2nd :;

I can't find the exact number of attendants at the moment, but it was around that many.

I had a really great time this weekend, amidst getting bombarded by all the Royucas DLC hype.

Had Dabuz in my pools so this was my first time finally meeting him in bracket. Had a close round 1 but round 2 was rather clean on his part. I think I learned a lot from it though and it was well played. We talked about Hatsune Miku and apparently we both went to the same concert in NYC so that was pretty hype. #weeboys I was second seed in my pool and made it out with no issues aside from that.

They reset the bracket for top 16 which was nice, so I wasn't going straight into Loser's. Surprising, but hey, I'll take it. I got my revenge set against Shippo and just barely won. His Sheik has gotten so good and our set was gut wrenchingly close. Immediately after that I had to play Vinnie and I was just in the Sheik mindset so I played really well. I lost round 1, took round 2, and had all the momentum round 3... But then SD'd. I wanted to SD irl, but regardless, Vinnie took the set and I was happy with my play besides that. Plus Vinnie is an excellent dude and player who took the whole tournament anyway. Just wish I'd stop SDing against him in bracket.

After that, I bodied a Rosalina because I refused to lose to another one. The guy was super nice and we talked after. It was clear he wasn't sure what to do in the Sonic match-up. So with that, I advanced to top 8 for Sunday, which was an awesome feeling.

I unfortunately lost to Eli, another member of iQHQ. That set was on stream so I'd like feedback on it once it's up. Basically, I barely lost to his ROB game 1, then downloaded him game 2 with a 2-stock on Duck Hunt... So he CP'd me with Janky Kong on BF to win the set. I was doing well besides trying to deal with that UpB. You'll see the video and I do a lot of the right things in most situations and it was still just insufferable. **** customs.

Anyway, got in a lot of friendlies with False too and things like that and ultimately just had a good time playing and learning from everyone. Definitely happy with my performance and only looking to get better from here.



Also, I can't wait for EVO to end. This format is complete garbage. I hate it. Customs suck, and the stage list with only 1 ban sucks. We need some major changes, and the DLC for Miiverse and Dreamland is godsend.

I think I'm ready for EVO. Just going to keep training for the next three days to keep myself sharp, and I'll be ready to go. I established myself as the second best player in Alberta with this tournament, but our scene as a whole is so strong right now. We're going to experience a lot of humbling moments at EVO, but also some victories too.

The best part? I can do this with or without Hammer Spin Dash. It all depends on the match-ups. For those of you going this year, I'll do my best to find you guys and cheer you all on too along with Alberta! This was one of my best performances yet. It's just a shame our stream failed so I can't offer any further highlights.

Man. So many Sonics and none of us broke top 8. RIP.

I'm happy with my performances except for one crucial mistake that cost me a set I didn't deserve to lose. Thanks to rage and Delfino... gg. Anyway, I know how to improve from it. I didn't adapt to the KO nerfs and fished too hard for the kill. If I had won that set in Losers I would've gone on to play Numbers which I was looking forward to since it had been quite some time since our last set. That was also my first time seeing him since the Nintendo World Championships so I was happy to see he was the same ol' Numbers, as expected.

Jtails sent me to Losers and I really enjoyed that set. Despite not winning, I felt we were both playing really well and was easily the most exciting game I played. We both really pushed each other but he always has a way of clutching out the victory. Always a pleasure with Jtails.

Did a ton of Sonic dittos against Wes and Craftis. We shared tech and laughs, and was happy to meet another Sonic (Craftis) who actually enjoyed the ditto as much as I do. I only had one ditto with Cyberman but funny enough he's the only other Sonic I've met who uses my colors and I feel we both have pretty similar playstyles...

Poor Tron went 0-2. I couldn't help but pop off because my crewmate was the one who sent him to losers... He's an anime player but plays Smash thanks to my friends and I. He knows the Sonic match-up better than anything else in this game because of me and beat him 2-0 with custom Pika so I couldn't help but freak out. The hype was real.

Then he had to play Cyberman in the ditto and lost. RIP.

Koopa is funny as always. Love that guy, and Blue is always a pleasure to catch up with. We basically had our little Sonic clique before we left the venue so it was nice to share sentiments and strategies about our character.

I can't actually confirm if BT used Sonic that day, as I didn't see much of him and the only match I saw he used Mii Gunner, but I'm assuming he must've used Sonic at some point.

I was happy with how I played. My movement and reads were on point, and I only lost to Nairo and Snakeee.

Snakeee I feel like I'm on the same skill level as, but he managed to take it. Round 2 I SD'd which was super unfortunate since I had the lead... The life of a Sonic main. Rosaluma is stressful.

Nairo I couldn't even take a stock off of, which was upsetting. I was so excited to play him, and I definitely felt like I wasn't getting #exposed as I held my own, but I just couldn't close off a stock. I need more ZSS practice but no one I know uses this character. I need more Rosaluma practice too.

I had a really vicious set streamed though. I'll post that in the video thread. Ninjalink went out of his way to tell me how clean my movement was. Definitely felt myself on that one (it was great seeing him again too since I hadn't seen him since like... Nebulous closed, lol).

It was a super fun time. Tons of people came out to support this as it's normally a weekly, but this was the grand reopening. Excited to have my local venue back. I got to hang out with a lot of faces I hadn't seen in a while, as well as ones I'd recently seen but just in a more familiar setting. Angel and Koopa came out from HBA and it's always nice talking with them. False was playing like fire and we pretty much just shot the **** for an hour or so while we sat in winner's bracket waiting for our matches to be called. D1 came out for commentary and Max helped run the bracket and do commentary as well. Numbers was hilarious during Grand Finals... Just a lot of fun stories came from this that I don't want to bog this post down further with. 2manyshoutouts. Just felt really good, not just by my performance, but with the scene as a whole. It all felt right.
