Let's Talk Controllers!

There seem to be a few good options as far as GC styled controllers are concerned, which is great! That said, We still don't know how well they will actually perform in the game. (There seem to be a few reviews, but none of the reviewers have tried them on actual games). This is concerning especially with Hori's controllers since the older Hori Battle Pad for Wii U Had a very sensitive Left stick, making walking VERY hard.

The new Hori battle pad has Turbo like the old one so I'm avoiding that since I never want to show up to a tourney to find that I can't use my favorite controller. Also, I don't want to run into another sensitive controller.

We have PDP's controllers, which look very solid. One reviewer said that the Left stick takes up a lot more space. He didn't like it, but I think this is great as it should make it easier to do things like Pikachu's Quick Attack angles. However, it's connector is USB meaning there's likely no backward compatibility. Thankfully there's USB ports on the side of the dock so this isn't a bad thing. It might be a good computer controller as well.

Then we have Power A's Options which are the Wired and Wireless options. Overall they also look great. One thing I'd like to note is that if you want to use a GC controller without a dock, the Wireless controller is your only option for a GC styled controller. I think this is what most people will be buying because of that reason alone. The only real Con I saw was that it was not rechargeable. It uses standard AA batteries (it claims to have 30 hours of life which should be fine).

And of course, there's the Switch Smash controller that Nintendo is making which, if anyone is wondering, is the same as the Wii U smash controller. This is missing the ZL button like the OG controller which is okay, but more buttons for Tech is always nice.

Personally, I'm likely going to get the PDP controller or the wireless Power A controller. I'm still waiting for an actual gameplay review before I buy one though. What are everyone's thoughts? What controller are you planning on using?

I'll just stick with the Nintendo made GC controllers. I still have a couple from the GC, smash 4, and Ultimate recently and they are all great. Nothing really tops GC controllers like them, but I don't know how well the new powerA GC controllers are like but I'm assuming they are nice quality but I can't quite find a comparison between the 2.
Anything outside the dock or I just feel like switching for some reason, I'll just the use the pro controller which the smash one will become my first pro controller when it comes out.

Im sticking with GC Controllers. The Official Smash Bros Ultimate GameCube Controller looks the most attractive to me, so I will picking that one up.

For smash 4 I played with the 3dsxl controller even on Wii U version... thought about it for a bit on wether to use joycon, pro or throw around a little extra money for a gc adaptor... In the end I decided on the GameCube adaptor.

It came in the mail a bit ago and worked perfectly but... my GameCube controller was a bit worn out after all these years... had the thing since melee. So I decided to throw in even more money and ordered the ultimate gc controller. Still waiting on it.

I don't like the obsession with GC controllers. Personally, it's been so long since I used one, I'm not sure how I could adapt to the weird layout.

Blackwolf666 Blackwolf666 Do you think that they will end support for the 3DSXL? I could understand why they would, but Nintendo seems like the kind of company that values backward compatibility. You might be able to continue using the 3DSXL.

Idk guys/gals. Look at those amazon reviews on the new smash controllers. A lot of people are finding QC defects. A lot of misaligned analogue sticks. I dont know if Im willing to try that.

Im interested in those HORI controllers though. I wonder if they work any better than the official Nintendo smash controllers.

I already prepared 2 Switch Pro Controllers and 2 pairs of Joy Cons. The Pro Controller will be my main way to play the game on TV, and all my controllers will be used when playing with 3 more friends. I'm not into these GameCube controllers, first because I never had a GameCube, so I have no affection to them, and second, because they are wired, and I'm not going to risk accidents with my console when I bring my friends to play, I think it's just dangerous to have a lot of cables connected to my console in a party day with crazy friends, and not having wires makes the gameplay more confortable.

Either way I feel like moving back to a standard controller. However, I believe that they are not going to support it and even if they did I feel like they'd make a paid for application on the 3ds to make it connect to the switch.

I've heard reports of the newest iteration of GCCs they produce being noticeably inferior to previous ones. I hope it's just a bad sample but the Wii U GCCs got crazy expensive after a while due to limited availability

This thread should be pinned since controller use seems to be a big topic lately.

Switch Pro (any type) or GC controller (any brand) will work best.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I already own a switch pro controller. I may or may not switch back and forth between the two.

Honestly I have never used a GC controller since I played on my GC, and never used one on a smash game other then Melee, I plan on using a wired Power A controller in Ultimate, it should suit me just fine

I've only really used the GameCube controller during the Melee days. For Brawl, it was the Wii Classic Controller, while for Smash Wii U, it was the Wii U Pro Controller.

Does no one around here have an OG GameCube controller? Lol I've been using the same one for like 16 years

That's not easy when your GameCube controller's Control Stick is worn out, and no longer operational. Meanwhile, my Wii U Pro Controller's Control Sticks aren't wobbling, even after having that controller for over 5 years.

Huh, always thought the newer stuff was easier to break

I'll be using a Gamecube controller for Ultimate. However, when it comes to which controllers I prefer in general... I have no preference.

My first experience in Smash was on a Project 64 emulator with a keyboard and a laggy computer. And for Brawl, I played with a Wiimote because the Gamecube controller I had at the time was from a third-party brand and extremely worn out. For Sm4sh, I switched between using the Gamepad, the 3ds, the Classic Controller...

If my only option for Ultimate is playing on a single Joy-Con, I'll do it. Hypothetically speaking, of course.

If anything a Switch pro controller will work better for you than some of the new GC controllers, people are reporting some stick issues with them.

Then I guess it is a good thing that I never bothered with GCN controller adapters during Smash Wii U's lifespan.

Besides, it's like 40 to 50 dollars for a GCC and an adapter.
Which asks the question, is it really worth it for just one game? At least for the Wii U Pro Controller, I could use it for more than just Smash Wii U, and was my primary controller when playing Breath of the Wild (I did have to switch over to the GamePad for certain puzzles though).

It's really not worth it. I'm not going to drop that much money when I already have a functional enough controller. Unless someone can prove that a GCC actually has a major advantage over a pro controller, I don't see the need to spend that much money on one.

The Gamecube controllers are nice but I think I'm just going to pick up a pro controller since I can use it for other games. Although, the pro controller is pretty pricey, too..

The higher price for the Switch Pro Controller is likely due to it having an amiibo reader built in. The Wii U Pro Controller never had that kind of feature.

True. I never figured that could count. I just use the joy con for amiibo. Maybe that accounts to them being a ridiculous $80.

I was looking to pass up Wii U system entirely until Smash 4 was announced. It was only then that I got the Legend of Zelda Wind Waker bundle (It was the same price as the regular one, and looked better). That was almost the only other game besides smash I had. If I'm willing to buy an entire console just so I can play one game, I'm most definitely willing to drop $60 for a controller that I only use in one game.

...but maybe I'm just crazy like that. I buy consoles just to play one Kingdom Hearts game, haha!

In all honesty, I'm seeing more support here for the Switch Pro Controller than I thought I would, which is great! I know that there was one person in my locals that used the Wii u pro controller for Smash 4 simply to keep the muscle memory separate from melee. As far as competitive advantages, I remember him saying that the control stick was more sensitive. It didn't take him too long to acclimate to it though (I wasn't able to do it).

I don't anticipate You'll be in the minority when the game first comes out, but give it some time and GC controllers will likely climb in popularity again. I've yet to see a controller come close to beating out the GC controller for any smash game, at least in popularity.

Still using my platinum gamecube controller i used when melee came out, the wire on top is a little frayed and the stick is a little worn but its been good to me from melee to smash 4 and I will use it in ultimate until it breaks, it still responds perfectly, if it ever does break i'll most likely buy a new one just like it

I feel like I should put it out there that gamecube controllers work for just about any game on the switch when used with the adaptor. Only negative is that if you try it with games that use all 4 trigger buttons... it'll still work but you just can't use that extra button.

I've never owned a Gamecube and am not excited to get used to the different button layout, so I'm probably going to go with a Pro Controller yet again.

However, I know a lot of competitive players dislike wireless controllers, supposedly because of interference. I might be moving to a place with an actual tournament scene in the upcoming year, and I want to know if that's a real issue people have troubles with at a local level or if it's actually not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. I've personally never had issues with at the couple small convention tournaments I've been to, so I'm a bit doubtful it's really a huge issue.

I got the Smash Ultimate GameCube controller not too long ago but I still plan to swap out between that and the Switch Pro controller.

I'm going to be playing a lot of Ultimate in handheld, so I'll want to get used to the standard joycon layout. At the same time, I grew up with the Gamecube and I'm planning on buying a pro controller at some point. So I'm slightly worried about trying to memorise three different control schemes.
