L Button is Broken on my controller...Need Some Help Please

So, the contoller I use, which I really like, has a messed up L button now.

Lots of times when I press the L button, about 25% of the time, it light shields. Since I use L to L cancel, instead of me continuing my combo or whatever I'm going to do after I L cancel, my light shield toggles on. Sometimes my character will remain light shielding even when I'm not pressing the L button.

In addition, when I L cancel and try to dash away, I roll instead, since the light shield is coming on. As you can imagine it's nearly impossible to play like this.

I REALLY need help fixing this. I have a triwing and many other controllers to repair the parts.

I've opened it up already, it's a white controller. I took out the L button with the Black box that's attached to it, and swapped it. It worked for a little while, then it started messing up again.

That probably means that it's not the trigger or spring that's messed up, but the green little strip that it pushes onto, right? And I can't take that off without soldering...

The other parts of my controller are perfect. My analog stick, my buttons, everything is the way I like it. The only problem is the L button, and no other controllers I have work for me otherwise, so I can't just use a different controller.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? It would be a GREAT help to me, thank you.

Man your problem is very easy to fix

L The button uses a spring for sensation, this spring is connected to an elevator, when you press the button, move the elevator. Most likely is that the button has been disconnected from the elevator. Try pressing the L button a few times , if the shield keep ups, then the problem is the elevator. You just have to disassemble the control and reconnect the elevator to the button.

Yesterday that happened to mi R button, maybe i could upload some pictures of mi controller.

Felipe- I just took off the back of my controller, which contains the part your talking about (buttons, springs) and put it onto the front of a different controller...And I had no problems whatsoever. I think that means it's not the spring, but something on the front of the controller...I'll try messing around with the elevator though..and your english is kinda hard to understand lol, i appreciate the help A LOT but do u think u could be a bit more clear

Well if it's just light shielding (and if it still happens when you swap buttons/springs/etc), then the problem has to be with the slider on the back of the controller circuit board resisting the shoulder button trying to pull/push it up all the way. Try just moving the left slider (keep in mind it'll be on your right now) up and down with your finger, and see if it's hard to move or if it has a tendency to catch anywhere.

Yeah, slider is a better word than elevator xDDDDDDDDD

If the lightshield is not so important for you, i recommend you stick the slider to the control (Put it up first xDDDDD )

IHSB- I messed around with the slider and it's perfectly loose and...slidey.

I fixed the problem. I don't know what the problem was, but I swapped controller fronts and backs to test, messed around with a few things and now it's working? It's probably gonna mess up soon though...

The only thing I can think of is that the slider was not returning all the way to the top when I pressed the L button down. I tinkered with it but I'm still not sure if that was the problem.

I'm sorry, but the "I can't use other controllers" deal is BS. What you think you just got insanely lucky and bought THE ONLY controller in the entire world that you can possibly play with? You just have to take some taking breaking a new controller in but once you do, it's YOUR controller and not just any controller.

Swapping the back was the next thing I was going to suggest (assuming the slider felt fine), so Rubyiris you should try it too. Since you (you=Jesiah) tried swapping shoulder buttons already, it's possible that the back controller shell itself was the problem. Maybe it's dirty or slightly bent/raised in a way that results in the L button rubbing against its opening, thereby getting stuck for a split second.

And yeah, you can eventually break in a new controller. So what he actually meant is "I can't get the same results using another controller any time soon, so I'd rather fix this one if it's at all possible." Obviously if he had no other choice (like if he pulled an Mew2King and left it on some random subway, or had it stolen by secret agents, or accidentally mailed it to Zambodia, or *insert other M2K controller john here*), he'd probably start breaking in/getting used to a new one asap, but it would take a lot of time before it felt as intuitive.

why should i have to put in months of work to break in a new controller, which i don't even have the funds to purchase in the first place?

you're a joke. this comment wasn't necessary in the slightest.

Ruby,
No, it doesn't take months, and it's not only the controller being broken in. It's also the player getting used to the controller.
As you can see, OP has more than one controller, so he doesn't need to buy a new one:

"and no other controllers I have work for me otherwise, so I can't just use a different controller."

When it comes to fixing the sliding mechanism on the motherboard, do this. Has never failed me at least =)

In my experience, it has been very rare that the spring is what causes the trigger to not slide back quickly or all the way. It's usually the trigger slide on the controller board. The plastic tends to get rough with a lot of use and starts to create more friction between the components, causing it to take longer to slide up and down, and sometimes even snag. Dirt can also accumulate in the slide and cause this.

I clean out the controller first, including wiping the inside of the slide. If that doesn't work, I just put a little bit of Rubik's Cube Lube into the trigger slide and it always fixes it.

*Warning: I use this lubricant because it does not cause damage to plastic components. Don't just use any old lubricant and hope that it works, as you will likely just ruin your board.*

sometimes the rubber pad that pushes down on the slider becomes torn or in some cases, completely removed.

If you only use L to L-cancel and you hit L all the way down to accomplish L-cancels you could hold down L while plugging the controller in and it won't have the ability to light shield. Then you can still use it to L-cancel.

Eggm- Just checked this thread after a while. That's actually a really good idea, although I've gotten a new controller since. Also, I need to light shield sometimes so that wouldn't work too well haha.

There was nothing I could do to the slider to fix it unfortunately. Thanks for the help though guys, I learned a lot about the inside of Melee controllers thanks to you lol

You can still light shield. Its just not a full light shield. I personally use Z for a perfect lightshield anyway.
