I really think that we should focus more on improving technical skill and reads then working on gimmicks that are very situational.
Most definitely. I am really trying to get better with my reads. And the gimmicky stuff just helps me practice my technical skill. What is good tech skill for Pit anyway? Is it Masashi/Earth who know buffering/whatnot or is it someone like Admiral or Pitzer who know more about the ATs and still can play at a fast pace?

How can we improve on reads? What are Pits setups?

Ya new avatar!:)

There's only so much we can pick up from masashi and earth. At some point people have to realize that you'll only reach that level when you just stop worrying so much about taking stuff and worry more about figuring out your options in your own way. It's great to follow but we'll only get anywhere as a character if each of us strive for excellence and strive to create our own answers.

A very small example. Japanese pits RARELY if EVER upthrow. And i highly disagree with it in many scenarios i've seen while watching them.

I can tell you this...most of "getting better" at brawl takes place while NOT playing.

but trying my own **** has only gotten me like 6 or 7 best pit out of like 10. bottom half of the spectrum tho. gotta have that determination and aspire to SOMETHING. may as well try and figure out the mentality of the best

Seriously, Maha. Think less about being the best pit, best whatever in Texas and all that fancy bull****. Just look at what you can work on, things that fit how you play and look at your competition.

I'm probably the worst Pit main on these boards (which unfortunately has the best of us being essentially a novelty item on the grandstand of things) but what I can do is to see what I'm doing right, see what I'm doing wrong and see what I need to do to improve. That could be spacing, move selection, game speed, matchups, game mechanics (which is something that probably a ton of us need to learn), learning to read players, learning to play off of auto pilot for full sets, whatever. There's so much to look at for self improvement.

Maha if you honestly believe by TRYING(good luck with that...) to copy masashi and earth will make you better your severely mistaken. They only have a few staple tactics. The rest is all the player. They have flow charts that exist in their head as well as impromptu abilities. That's something you have to create for yourself and takes time. It's one thing to have your mistakes pointed out for correction. It's totally different than thinking you can watch someone intensively and reach their level on that alone.

Your best bet if you plan on sticking to pit is play when you can. RECOOOOOORRRRD. And study. When you can't play. Conceptualize. Think of scenarios that came up during play. Common scenarios in important matchups of your area. What tools am i good with or do i have that would be good there? And then after all that thinking(i suggest keeping notes tkd does this all the time and it's a great thing to do. I'm starting a mu booklet to write in after each game) go out and test it. See how they respond and tweak. Getting good at smash is pretty simple tbh...it's just a long road.

but if they always pick the best option, how is not trying to study their option selection a good way to study when it is so hard for me to get out nowadays? apex put me in so much debt that all i can do is watch vids, contribute what little i can to the boards these days, and talk **** to people for fun in the houston thread when im not picking up double shifts trying to get out of the debt apex put me in. i mean whilst i borrow my friends wii i can practice IC grabs, but aside from these things all i have is vids and hobo once a month assuming i save up enough to make the next one :(

also how does one go about learning from their own videos? whenever i watch mine all i see is myself picking what should've been the most perfect and almost infallible option (in my mind at least) and it still not working. i can't mentally grasp what it is im doing wrong when i get bodied because to me it seems like the options im picking should be working :glare:

Kuro, that's not true. The Japanese smashers love Up-throw. I've seen Masashi use that move more often. F-throw is his second favorite, while Earth's new favorite throw is b-throw, then up-throw is his second.

Also @ Maharba, studying the Japanese players is a good idea. I still do it, and it helps to see what they do better and their movement/buffering abilities. Also, it's good to see why they do certain tactics. When you watch the matches, ask yourself why you got hit/what you were doing wrong, and what the opponent was doing right.

Should of specified that in the mk mu specifically. Go watch every recent video like i did last night. Then come back tell me that =/

I never said it was a bad idea either. I said don't expect to be good by studying them like a fan-girl. I go back everyonce in a while just to refresh myself on some things they do.

Hi :pit:'s.

Aj, come over my house next week so we can practice. I'm gonna take you to the next level.

Also, that :pit: top 5 list on that one thread is lololol. The best :pit: I've played was either Tara, Aj, or Anthony (HeyitsYo). Only Yo actually took a game from me though =O. If anyone ever needs me to ****ride them in tourney then lemme know and I'll trash talk your opponent and ****ride you (Vagride in fyre's case?)

We could all improve on one thing, Mindgames and Set up's is something for me. I'm thinking of some new things that I might implement in my style soon.
