If he was so boring, why is he the most requested Nintendo newcomer on the ballot, even by non-DK fans?

The sad thing is that people are trying to do that
I have friends who put ballot entries like "The Removal of Dark Pit" or "Anyone BUT Wolf" into the ballot
It saddens me.

The phenomenon of "My opinion clearly represents what is mainstream" is a curious one, to be sure. (I remember it hitting Wii Fit Trainer's reveal, since a surprising amount of people don't know that her three pieces of software have outsold the entire Smash series, for example...)

Editted, to remove a joke made in poor taste. I've been seeing quite a few of these pop up on reddit, and I honestly think it's simply driven by said poster's favorite characters not winning the out take polls or having their name thrown around like King K. Rool and their first instinct is to bash the character and their supporters.

You know what?.. I actually got stuck with the thought of someone reporting here someday, saying that "some employee" of NoA said that Shovel Knight was a fan-favorite among the company; (that's before Roy and Ryu be confirmed).. and there was no word on K. Rool..
Not that exactly I think we aren't getting K. Rool by this (and not even that we're getting Shovel Knight by the same reason).. was something really vague and hard to believe,.. but you know, could make sense (but NoA doesn't reflect Nintendo in Japan, or Sakurai's decision). I just fear how many vacancies we have for characters coming from the Ballot, and what are the ones that Nintendo thinks are pertinent (aka worthy of asking money by them).

Not sure who it was but I think someone with a Mewtwo avatar said something about a person with links to NoA saying that Shovel Knight is the talk of the town in there, but I don't recall him having a source to back up those claims. I might not be remembering that right though.

I don't think that's the straight logic behind this, sadly; If they have something against (not the right term) the character or something that not scream "worthy of money", they may change for the second more profitable option or something.. Again, the amount of people voting in the ballot aren't exactly resulting in individual purchases. I know people that are voting and don't even has a 3DS or a Wii U. lol.

Thing is, they asked fans who they want. Fans answered that. Nintendo realizes "Fans want this character, meaning they are willing to pay money for them". Very good business decision

Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right! I SO HOPE.. but, I have my fears, principally with internal favoritism or promotion for future titles coming with the Ballot as excuse; After all, any character was voted, and probably we aren't getting official (partial or not) results from this.. so we'll never know who is in fact on the top of the thing..

I was literally just recalling this today. Even though my logical brain tells me it was hogwash, the broken heart who has been disappointed by Smash before knows it could very well be a possibility, however small.

Ugh, if K. Rool doesn't make it I don't know what I'm gonna do with myself.

In that case Sakurai should never had said 'from now on it's going to be fan service'. It's also a PR disaster. "We made that thingy from Fossil Fighters playable! Sure, we decided to do this instead of a fan favourite character and we have a small amount of resources, but we wanted to do it!"

People can dream (Kratos is never getting in Smash, reason: exclusive to Sony. Scorpion is never getting in Smash, reason: entire character/game is based on blood and gore, you remove that, you don't have Scorpion anymore, just a Scorpion cosplayer).
Let them vote for who they want, Nintendo's not going to consider those characters anyway. They'll see the most popular ones first and I believe K. Rool has a very good ****ing chance.

I just feel sorry for the poor saps who have to root out the junk votes (i.e., votes for various TV, movie, and literary characters, votes for random gross things, and so on and so forth), myself, as that is surely going to require a lot of tedious work.

There are people who write that the character is from "Donkey Kong", "Donkey Kong Country", "DK", "DK Country", "DKC".. or even being more specific mentioning other games like Donkey Kong 64.. If this count is being done by a bot, I'm impressed.

Personally, if I was running the ballot, I would do two things:

-Organize it through Miiverse or something where voting can be held accountable
-Default to linking a Wikipedia entry of either the character or the game they're from via Google

But again, I think Nintendo wanted this to be as open as possible to drum up hype and speculation.

I don't know if I'd even want to see results because of how skewed they'd be. I know I tried to vote only once per device, but I know some people are easily writing bots to spam votes for character X. I'd hate for some off-the-wall character to get in just because one person wrote a quick bot, whereas a group of people who are being more conservative get shafted. Again.

I'd guess they'd have a bot to remove all votes with the same reasoning, and then a bunch of lucky interns get so sift through the rest. Assuming they're even going to read all of that, and it's not just going to end up as a graph.

You know, I've been thinking...if this David Wise rumor is true, and I have nothing but trust in Chad/Hyle, K. Rool's odds just climbed even higher. Why? Well...

--David Wise is basically the Donkey Kong series composer, despite work on Star Fox Adventures and minor old Rare games. If he's working on a new project, odds are very high it's DK-related.

--The project could just straight up be composing music for a K. Rool trailer and/or stage, like the Street Fighter guy did for Suzaku Castle.

--If the project is a DK game, I think the odds are great that K. Rool is in it as main villain. What with Michael Kelbaugh and the official Retro account following the Twitter movement, they're not only acknowledging the Kremling demand, but are seemingly indicating that they're not done with the franchise. They're also working on a secret new game and Tanabe has said there are more things he wanted to do with DK (3D experimentation and Animal Buddies).

--Therefore, K. Rool could very well be "muhrelevant" within Nintendo based on a game we don't even know about yet. If it weren't already enough that he's topping the ballot and 9 out of the 13(?) DK games you can buy from Nintendo at the moment feature him, that could push him over the top. In any case, this new game would outprioritize TF as the game to "promote" (which is kind of dumb that people think an early 2014 game would be Nintendo's first choice to advertise if they indeed went down the promotion path).

@toadster101 had a similar theory not long ago, and thanks to this new puzzle piece, I'm starting to believe in it.

So it was a Street Fighter composer that did the music in Smash? That's interesting. I guess it means that for DLC they just outsource and commission music instead of keeping a music team together.

I bet there has to be a certain amount of forum lurking going on. I highly doubt that for a game as massive as Smash Bros. that the team would be completely out of touch with the public.

Now that the Miiverse is a thing, they may look a lot closer at that for ideas, but they'd have to sort through all of the inappropriate posts first. But they can get really quick results from looking at various online polls. But those are also all over the place - but K.Rool is at or near the top in all of them. I guess the more polls that place him high, the better it is...
