Question for Golden Sun fans. Is Dark Dawn a good game? I need a new RPG in my life since I finished Kingdom Hearts, so I was thinking of getting it.
It is a good game.

It's just not as good as the first two games in the series, and it can be kind of a let down after playing the other two.

Unfortunately, it also massively spoils the other two. So, while you'll enjoy Dark Dawn more if you play it first, it will spoil the others.

I've played the original, so I don't think that Lost Age spoilers will be that bad. Will I still understand what is happening?

I quite enjoyed it. It was my favorite RPG game for a while as well (I still don't know if I like the original GS more, I can't tell.) Most fans are disappointed with it, but it's one of my personal favorite DS RPG games (if not my absolute favorite). Of course, if you do decide to try it out, you can form your own opinion on it and whatnot. In my unpopular opinion, the games gameplay and overall tone is just as good as the original. Hurray for controversial opinions.

Um, probably? There is a pretty big plot twist in the middle of the second game that sort of changes Isaac's quest, but apart from that, it's pretty straightforward.

This is true. Tone, mechanics, themes, and characters are great in both games.

It's mostly plot and world design where Dark Dawn falls short of the originals. For world design, it's because the first games were such a coherent whole, and Dark Dawn retcons some new things in rather ham-fistedly.

For plot, Dark Dawn is an adventure to prepare for an adventure. I have no idea who at Camelot thought this was a good idea, but of all the people who worked on Dark Dawn, that person needs to be fired the most. Once Dark Dawn's actual plot gets going, it's pretty good. But you spend about 3/4rs of the game thinking you are on a fetch quest to get ready for the main adventure (which the game NEVER ACTUALLY GETS TO).

The only other problem I have with it is the points of no return. I hate these, they go against the game's tone, and the awesome design of the original games, and they just need to die.

But that is just three things (of varying importance) amidst an otherwise really strong game. Definitely play Dark Dawn. It's still a great game.

Controversial is a pretty accurate word, I've seen people say that it was the best in the series, I've seen people who think it's average, and I've seen people who think that it is so bad that they refuse to acknowledge it's existence. That's why I came here to ask.

He'd better make it in SSB4.

He only was an assist trophy in Brawl due to time and technical limitations, right? Sakurai saw the awesome moveset potential and immediately set out to design Isaac as one of the first characters for SSB4, right? He's saving Isaac until the end just to have the final reveal be a completely awesome Golden Sun homage, right?
That's what I want to believe. I mean... there are practically zero AT with songs in brawl, are they not?
I think believing Sakurai didn't mention nothing about Isaac's not being a character in brawl and his initial plans with him to surprise us during Smash 4 hype time is pushing it too far... but believing is all we've got left!

Even with those things you mentioned, I had an immeasurable amount of fun embarking on that fetch quest. Of course, due to my lack of GS knowledge at the time, the world design didn't bother me at all (and kind of still doesn't). Also, I may be remembering this wrong, but I recall that after the eclipse, weren't you able to go back to old towns and stuff on your boat? I remember going back to some town I hadn't seen in a long time after the eclipse, only to find a town filled with dead people and a house with ghosts in it. My mind may be a little hazy, but I remember doing that.

You can revisit a couple of the areas, but not others. It's far more restrictive than the other games. It stops you from doing things like acquiring Djinn you missed, or buying items at shops you passed.

That last bit is especially heinous, because there's one shop in the game that sells Leather Boots, the only footwear that the whole party can equip (besides the single copy only Sandals). So if you pass that shop without acquiring four extra pairs for all the characters you haven't met yet, TOO BAD, no footwear for them. It's just STUPID game design.

And, yeah, it's a fun quest. You spend the whole game exploring Weyard, talking to people, and doing awesome Psynergy puzzles. Which is great, that's what made Golden Sun awesome. I just wish that your quest was more epic than "this idiot broke something, go replace it".

It's fun but it certainly isn't as good as the first 2, however the game mechanics are all still there and are quite enjoyable. I'm enjoying it.

Here's a curious question to all of you.
If Isaac is revealed to be a newcomer, what would your reaction be? Will you go crazy, will you scream, or will you be like "meh"?
I would be stoked and surprise my friend to see his reaction as he is the only person I know who loves GoldenSun as much as the next person.
I would freak out.

On a side note I read a rumor (of course without validity) that basically said Isaac is in and that Sol Sanctum is the stage, with it being a multistage area on the Wii U version. Would one of the lighthouses be better you think?

Oh, I see. I really need to play the game again, I should know these things. Also, you're right on the quest not being as epic as it could have been, lol. I think they were saving the real epic quest for the sequel, which sadly may never exist. I think DD was mainly a game of Isaac's son taking responsibility and rising to the challenge of being a leader and a hero. It was less about the epic quest, and more just a test of Matthew's leadership and courage. The sequel should be where all that Matthew learned on his first quest is put to the test, and perhaps he'll even fight alongside his father and mother, who knows. So, if you look at it more as a side story and less of an epic sequel to the originals, the plot isn't that bad. That's how I see it, anyway.

Agreed.

And, if Golden Sun was a series like Mario, chugging away with sequel after sequel every few years, I'd be willing to have that sort of game. But if you can't guarantee a sequel, don't waste your entire game setting up for one.

I heard that there was something with Alex in Dark Dawn that wasn't fully resolved, is that true?

If by "not fully resolved" you mean "barely explored at all", then yes.

It felt like they were holding Alex's story over for a sequel, which we haven't gotten yet.

Alex was also a scrapped party member in Lost Age. Camelot wants to do something with him but they just won't for whatever reason.

Whatever they are planning for Alex, they better reveal it in GS4. It's most likely that he just want's to rule over all of Weyard with and iron fist (or Alchemy albeit) but was ruined by Isaac for absorbing a portion of the Mars Star. Now, I wonder if Alex is trying to find a way to extract it from Isaac or he is trying to find another way to get power through the Light and Dark Adepts power. That's something to see in the next game.

To make things clear, Dark Dawn is one of my favourite games on the Nintendo DS and I loved playing it. After a 20 hour playthrough I even got stuck because of a game breaking bug (seriously?! the original 2 didn't have any as far as I know), just 2 hours before the final boss fight and I restarted the whole game and played it all over again for 30 hours. I was hooked onto it. I really was happy that the gameplay mechanics had mostly all carried through but disappointed that the original party hardly makes an appearance in the game.

It is just that there were so many things that were missing and could be improved. The game seemed like a step down in other ways. The storyline did not seem as impressive and did not make sense many times (one word - retconning although it did pick up some slack later on) as the original 2 games and the dialogues were even longer than the original games. Plus the points of no return were absolutely horrifying about which I did not even know from the start causing me to miss a summon tablet as well as a djinn (collected em all the 2nd time after my save got ruined). P

Alex's role was completely shafted where they introduce him but he does nothing special and his story is left completely hanging. Alex was supposed to be there instead of Piers in the 2nd game so Camelot had something planned for him revealed at the end of the 2nd game but not expanded in the 3rd game.

I will go crazy! I will probably scream (probably my sister as well). I will whack all those who "meh" (kidding). I will then download the reveal trailer, watch it hundreds of time, show it to my friends who don't even know Golden Sun and get them interested. Plus I will change my avatar, signature, profile pictures everything to show this! That will be one heck of a day!

Plus I will dance!

I think all of us posting here like Golden Sun. That's why we're here. That's why we're hoping that Isaac gets in. Because the games are simply amazing. Isaac's appearance in Smash would mean so much to the series we love.

It would also tie in another brilliant part of Nintendo's past. We have characters ranging from before the NES (Mario, Donkey Kong, Game and Watch), the NES itself (Meta Knight), the GameBoy (Kirby), the SNES (Diddy Kong), the N64 (Wolf), the GameCube (Captain Olimar), the DS (Lucario), Wii (Wii Fit Trainer), the 3DS (Greninja, Robin, Lucina, the Miis...) even stand alone "consoles" like R.O.B.

Yet the only two GBA characters we have are Roy and Lucas. One didn't make it to Brawl, and the other is on the "most likely to be cut" list alongside Snake. Both have other representation of their series. Neither is as iconic of a face for the GBA as Isaac.

Why do you hate the GBA, Sakurai? It's one of the best handheld systems ever made!

The GBA, the best handheld system ever! The 3DS is coming close but it still needs more time as well as more titles to make it as epic as the legendary Gameboy Advance. Plus it still has the behemoth DS to overcome.

Sakurai, give us Isaac, the face of GBA's best game!

Not only is he the face of the GBA's best game, I think he's the face of the GBA. Can you think of any other character that comes close to his level of recognition/iconic status who originated on the GBA? Sure, there were tons of great Kirby games, Metroid games, Mario games, etcetera. But when it comes to GBA original titles, Isaac is the face of the console. He is the best choice to represent the GBA. Which is now, sadly a retro system.

There are so many reasons to include him. Sakurai can't have left him out, can he?

BTW, if he's confirmed, we need to get everyone to agree to post their favorite rendition or remix of the ending credits music of The Lost Age. There would be no better way to celebrate than with a ton of awesome renditions of "The Golden Sun Rises".

You got that right. GoldenSun is definitely a great game that many should, at the very least, look into. We've gotten several people here who have never played the series before till just recently and love it (been lurking this thread for some time before I joined. lol). I tried looking to see if there was any special day/anniversary that the series might have. It already happened in June. :/ However, I did notice that The Lost Age was released on the Wii U July 23rd in Japan. Hmm...?

Well yea! Atleast for me, and a lot of other Golden Sun fans, GBA means Golden Sun. I have played tons of gameboy advance games more than I can count or remember really but the game that always comes to mind is Golden Sun. Nintendo does churn out games of its iconic franchise on its consoles but Golden Sun was a perfectly new game and a perfectly awesome one at that. Although I was kind of wistful that Isaac was not controllable in first half of The Lost Age, the game was still really really satisfying.

The thing is, Gameboy Advacne is not represented as a retro system. It is in a period between Retro and modern. Usually Nintendo portrays NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and SNES as retro nothing after those. Nintendo is sadly overlooking the GBA.

The good news is that in Japan both the games of Golden Sun have been launched on the Virtual Console in Japan and the 2nd game should launch in Europe and America soon afterwards.

Even these people are scouring the Internet for news of the reveal!

Has anyone ever considered the Wise One to be an assist trophy? Or maybe even Kraden (lol)? What would he do? Would Palutena know him personally since they're both like gods? Just a random thought coming in. :)

When it comes to Assist Trophies, there are way too many to put them all in.

Sage Hama is my favorite. Because we know she is both a master of Psynergy, and a master of physical forces (Ki and Chi). She would be awesome.

The Gladiators or the Thieves. A trio of physical fighters out to prove their worth! These unfortunate fellows don't realize how outclassed they are, but they'll charge into battle headlong just the same!

Sunshine the Blacksmith. He comes out, gathers all the items on the battlefield, and works them into a random, yet usually powerful, item. Can include making all three pieces of the Dragoon or Daybreak.

Alex. He comes out, and fires off water spouts that are very thin, but if they hit you they do huge vertical knockback.

Djinn. Pick one, it'll work.

Any of the playable cast (apart from Isaac, who should be playable). Again, any character, any move, they'll all work.

The Wise One: Picks up players at random and Meteor Smashes them into the ground. If they're in midair at the time, instant KO.

The first game is on the Wii U E-Shop, or you can pick up Dark Dawn for the DS. Give the games a shot, they're great. Welcome to the support thread!

The Wise One: Picks up players at random and Meteor Smashes them into the ground. If they're in midair at the time, instant KO.
So many choices! Actually to be honest I always wanted to see how strong Sage Hama is. Apparently she is really strong being the founder of her own ki school and said to be the master of Master Feh. Plus she is really intelligent and has the power of foresight. Considering how badass you can train Ivan to be, she should be simply amazing.
It was funny though how we had to come and lift the rock off of Hsu whereas she should have been able to shatter it with her chi as an NPC told us before.

So many choices for assist trophies! As long as Isaac is playable I am fine with any good representation of the series.

I'm not too familiar with the golden sun franchise, but I think Isaac would be a wonderful addition to Smash bros! Just thought I'd throw that out there...
Welcome to the support thread! Thanks for pitching in to support Isaac. I would really recommend you to try the golden sun games as they are amazing and testament to high quality JRPGs, that too by Nintendo. Amazing gameplay, amazing storyline and most of all amazing ability to keep you hooked onto the screen for hours on end.

I'll probably jump off my chair and scream "F[bad word]K YEAH!"

Question for Golden Sun fans. Is Dark Dawn a good game? I need a new RPG in my life since I finished Kingdom Hearts, so I was thinking of getting it.
Yes and no. It's a good game, but it's not a good Golden Sun.

But that's my opinion.

Having played through every game in the series recently, I feel like Dark Dawn's the better game than the original Golden Sun. Not that I'm saying Golden Sun is a bad game, because I really love it, but Dark Dawn's got more content and depth in gameplay (especially when fighting the optional bosses). This is just my opinion, but I feel like it's also got a better atmosphere, more interesting characters, more to explore, and a soundtrack that's just as good as the original. I'd even consider the story to be better, because in the original, you were just chasing the villains the whole time and ended up not resolving anything. The points of no return in Dark Dawn don't really bother me either, because I generally explore places thoroughly and don't like backtracking.
I think, in terms of what the games did for the series, and their quality in comparison to other games that were out at the time, the original is the better game, but for someone who isn't concerned with such things and just wants to play a good game, I think Dark Dawn's the better choice.
I'd recommend TLA over DD any day though. :)

As for an AT, if Isaac does make it as a playable character, I'd definitely want to see Alex. He'd attack you with snide remarks about your intelligence.

I have to agree with you on that. Honestly, Dark Dawn on it's own is an amazing game, imo. If you compare it to the originals, obviously, people are going to say DD was bad. But we shouldn't compare them. They are different. What I like about DD is being able to explore ancient ruins that were far more advanced eons ago that today and learning about the Light and Dark Adepts and so much more. I love exploring and learning about the lore behind it all. Meeting new (and old) characters, discovering all the character's potential, shipping (because we all know how much fun that is. lol), music, new abilities, answers revealed, questions arise, etc. I could go on, but everyone gets the idea. Haha.

I will say DD had its faults too. My biggest problem with it was not being able to go back to find the Djinn and Summon Tablets that you might have missed. Looking up the locations of those was the only thing that I had to "cheat" on that game and it bugged me a lot. And of course, that huge cliffhanger at the end. -_-

Alex would be a fun AT as well as the Wise One and other characters.

Ok, the time of smash related dreams hit me again. I actually had a pretty "realistic" one. I saw a trailer where a Mr. Saturn walks on screen and meets a small venus djinn. They look at each other and have big ? over their heads. And then Ness and Isaac get into the frame. =D

Whether people liked Dark Dawn or not, it does represent how much of a voice we (the fans) have. If we could get a 3rd game, we might be able to get Isaac to be playable. And if that happens, new fans will arise and help us all to get a 4th game. Of course, I'm not the only one who thinks that. I sometimes wonder if getting Isaac as an assist trophy in Brawl also helped get Dark Dawn made since many were unfamiliar with him at the time and wanted to learn more about him and became new fans that way.

I would be epically hyped up!

This was a premonition, not a dream, right?

I WANT THIS TO HAPPEN SO BADLY NOW.
It's probably a very good thing I never remember my dreams, or I'd be completely disappointed with the game.

So, how much is Golden Sun on the eShop? I'm worried about my old DS Lite completely falling apart.

That. Sounds. AMAZING.

Then Ridley drops down from the sky and kills everyone. The end.

I can actually see that happening. Include Lucas in that trailer since his game was also in the GBA. That would be cool!

Thinking of Isaac being playable made me listen to some of the music from GoldenSun. I put this together real quick having all 10 overworld themes together from all 3 games because I like them a lot. Thinking of making another one. Hope this is ok to post here.

It's $7.99 +tax. Not bad. I have it and its cool to play it on both the tv and gamepad.
